Defenses are making QBs into check-down artists

Anyone else noticed this week 1...........I know it's early is it possible after all the rule changes favoring offense, that defenses have caught up like they usually do? This is interesting coz if the trend continues.....what impact (if any) it could have on the skyrocketing QB contracts?

I don't believe it'll slow it down at all. I dont know the data but I'm inclined to believe that every QB isn't getting this treatment. If that's the case you'd still need someone capable to keep them in that defense. Could be wrong tho.

I noticed this last season as well. But it’s even more week 1. Offenses usually adapt so we will see what happens.
I wonder if there is any correlation to the league devaluing the RB position. In other words, defenses generally don't respect the running so they are keeping everything in front of them and daring teams to run. Not sure about this .....just curious

Buffalo was super impressive last night on D. Miami couldn’t get anything going down field. Having said that Buffalo has now won 12 of 13 games against Miami.
The Buffalo D will be the difference maker if they truly make the big run this year.

As long as he remains focused, this is a strength of Prescott.

^ This........defenses are historicaly ahead of offenses in week 1. I believe the average qb yards were 160 yards or so.

The exception is the running game as we've seen with Niners, Texans and Chargers as they don't require the exact same timing as the passing games does

If more of the starting offenses actually played preseason a bit more this would be a moot point......and of course WRs holding out of TC and PS doesn't help either.

The Qbs numbers will return

This is the cat and mouse game of football, and right now teams with an effective running game are going to thrive. Defenses are selling out to rush the passer and putting deep zones behind it. Offenses who can control the LOS and can run the ball up the gut are going to be able to take advantage of this and force defences to play more balanced. This is where the Cowboys could thrive defensively with some very good players in their secondary. This is also where we may hit our heads against the wall for going cheap at RB.

Right now the top 10 teams in rushing YPG are 8-2. The bottom 10 rushing teams went 2-8. The top 10 passing yard teams are 6-5. Bottom 10 passing teams 4-6. Way too small of a sample size to draw conclusions from, but its interesting data. For whatever its worth too 5 of the top rushing teams are also on the top passing list. I havent looked up previous years numbers, but just from memory I think being a top run team in the league was about 50/50 in terms of making the playoffs.

Easier said than done.......especially with a $50M+ QB. You are not paying him this kind of $$$ to hand off to a player making less than $10M in some cases.
That attitude will be the downfall of some teams. Tom Brady made a career out of letting it fly when needed, but also not being afraid to hand it off 30+ times a game when needed. Part of the value these QBs should be bringing is in being able to diagnose a defense and check out of a bad play

If the defense is giving you a run look, I'd run it every single time until they change their pre-snap look/coverage and prove they can stop it!

I think a lot of it has to do with it being the weakest the QB position has been in forever.

Elway, Farve, Kelly, Aikman, Marino, and Young transitioned to Brady, Rodgers, Manning, and Brees.

Today it’s Mahomes and nobody else.
Thats why teams have no choice but to be held hostage to franchise considered QBs in this current era.

You seem rather slow to the dance on this one.
