Defenses are making QBs into check-down artists

I wonder if there is any correlation to the league devaluing the RB position. In other words, defenses generally don't respect the running so they are keeping everything in front of them and daring teams to run. Not sure about this .....just curious
I think that’s a big part of it. The shelf life of a Rb is also a part of it. But I think the difference in say the top 3 RB’s and guys 7 through 10 just isn’t that much with a few exception like McCaffery.

BREAKING NEWS: This is a setup by the league to make QB's throw for less yards so the asking price comes down!!!!! 60 million, who gets 61 million????!
I think it’s more we’ve had several years with really good WR classes so the league has a lot of talent at the position. Defenses simply take away the big play and force you to go on 10-12 play drives is safer because one penalty can kill a drive. Just smart defense. Force team to put together long dives with any mistakes as opposed to chunk plays

You’re not gonna argue with me because you know it’s an argument you’re gonna lose. There’s a number of Hall of Fame QBs that didn’t have great playoff records because their teams weren’t good enough. I handed out the elite title to four QBs that everyone who knows football consider elite.
A SB is a team accomplishment. Very few QB’s are good enough to win a SB without a good overal roster. Right now I think there’s only one in the nfl who could possibly get to a SB without a overal good roster

And to me that is what elite means. Now I am quite willing to say Burrows and Allen are franchise QBs. BUT that is a tier down from Elite and only Mahomes fits that label now.

Yyyyyeah would be nice to have a reasonable run game in the face of what the defenses in the NFL are doing.

How many starting QB's are getting a lot of reps in pre-season? I think most veteran QB's don't play in the pre-season games so it takes a game or 2 to ramp up. Rookie QB's even ones typically have a much more conservative game plan in the regular season as well.
I don't know if you can really buy into that as much any more. Teams are having joint practices against other teams much more often and the starters are getting reps there. In years past, starters still didn't get a lot of series or reps in pre-season games and in recent years those reps have gotten replaced in those joint practices. I think fans discount them or don't think about it, largely due that they aren't televised.

If the bar for coaches to get into the HOF wasn't out the ceiling, Vic Fangio would deserve a spot there.

Passing stats were inflating and inflating and inflating from 2005-2020, with seemingly no end in sight, then suddenly the wave just broke. Defenses just erased a decade's worth of offensive inflation overnight. What changed? Fangio's popularization of the cover 6. To me, you can't tell the story of the game without mentioning him.

At least here, starters got pre-season game 3. Might have been a quarter or 1 drive etc but a little something to see how they do against an opponent that can fully rush/smack the qb. you can throw a tick late in practice but not when Micah has free reign to body slam you.

Anyone else noticed this week 1...........I know it's early is it possible after all the rule changes favoring offense, that defenses have caught up like they usually do? This is interesting coz if the trend continues.....what impact (if any) it could have on the skyrocketing QB contracts?

I think it also has to do with how little teams play in the offseason...it will take time for the Offenses to gel and will ramp it up as the year goes on. Just my 2 cents.

And that QB has one of the GOAT NFL coaches in history. One could argue the best offensive mind ever in the league.

1000%........it is amazing Andy Reid doesn't get enough respect. Mahomes is good, there is no question about that but people forget Reid is the best offensive mind in the league. Shannahan is close but after him, there's a huge drop-off. They are that good. Hell, look what he did for the Eagles with Donovan McNabb as his franchise QB.

younger qb's have come in the league after Dak has been here and have had more success, how do you diagnose that?

Dak went to the playoffs his first season after being drafted in the 4th round. Herbert and Lawrence were first round draft picks and got paid max contracts without winning a playoff game.

So try to answer the question this time without dancing around it.

How do you diagnose them getting paid huge contracts as first round picks without winning a playoff game?

The ability to check down when the first and second targets aren't open is something NFL QBs have been relying on for a long while. This isn't something new. Maybe in today's NFL, more defenses can force QBs to do this, but it's what the better QBs do.

I think a lot of it has to do with it being the weakest the QB position has been in forever.

Elway, Farve, Kelly, Aikman, Marino, and Young transitioned to Brady, Rodgers, Manning, and Brees.

Today it’s Mahomes and nobody else.
The last highly regarded can't miss QB selection was probably Andrew Luck and that was quite a number of years ago. Now it's a lottery pick amongst 4 or 5 quarterbacks that come out each year, as to who will be the best one.
