Could the addition of Brent, Okoye coupled with Spencers return solidify our dline by midseason? The return of scandrick, increased experience for youngins and leadership of Wilcox could make this defense formidable by the 6th game. R McClain may solidify our lbs.

I feel like this defense will give me feel good moments..just maybe not early :/

Could potentially be solid later in the season if everything works out perfectly

WDE Lawrence/Mincey
3DT Melton/Okoye
1DT Brent/McClain/Bishop
SDE Spencer/Selvie/Crawford

Okoye is nothing special and it may be quite a while before Brent is physically ready to play. Management needs to be on the lookout for late camp cuts from teams with DL depth.

This isn't looking good I'm afraid

If Spencer is healthy he starts at RDE and Selvie battles with Mincey & Crawford to start at LDE.

Yes of course it can. If Spencer can return and play RDE while Lawrence is out, that could be a big help.

Not sure why everyone thinks Brent is gonna walk back into football..... we need to expect a lengthly NFL suspension think 4-6 game. Then is this guy even in football shape.....he hasn't played NFL football for a LOOOONG time....been smoking weed and setting in jail for the last year and folks around here act like his is a savior for the DL.....freaking amazing...does he even know the system....is he in shape......he was average to begin with and what is gonna make him better now..... All this Brent talk is so far in left field its amazing.....

My thoughts were it would take 3 or 4 games for them to get going anyway, so yes, 6 to 8 games.
Every year is different, so for those that say, players coming off injuries, been sitting out can't possibly help at all this year, well, it's been done before, so why not us?

I think this line could be 'OK' against the run.

The biggest problem I see is they are relying on Spencer, Selvie, Lawrence, and Crawford for a pass rush. All of them have issues at this point:
  • Spencer - Unknown commodity at 4-3 end, trying to come back from micro-fracture surgery, in his 30's, etc
  • Selvie - NFL journeyman who had a career year rushing the passer last season. Can he do it again? There is tape on him at this point
  • Lawrence - Not sure how much he'll contribute in 2014 having missed almost all of camp. Hopefully can contribute as a 3rd down specialist later in the season
  • Crawford - Need to see what he can do. I have heard good things about him -- however, I haven't seen much since he was drafted in the pass rush department
We all saw how the secondary did with the inadequate pass rush last season that still managed 19 sacks from Ware/Hatcher.

They are really going to have to have a number of things go their way this season to match last year's pass rush.

Nice post, and I would say accurate.
However [isn't there always a however..LOL]
Interesting comment on Selvie, and true. But it's funny how some fans whine about Selvie, saying he only did it for 1 year, a career year, he can't repeat it, on and on. But, Hatcher, he had a career year also, but oh no, he will be missed. Well, Melton is equal to that loss on the DL. Yes, coming off an injury, but how many players have come off that type of any injury and have been fine.
Ware played for 2 years now, hurt a good part of the time. I think between a few players and fresh legs in a rotation, 2 players can get 6 sacks.

To be honest, one would have to also acknowledge that the only reason that Jason Hatcher remained last year, and even Canty moving on, was not on play but on his price tag being cheapest.

that is not very comforting either as we have very little data on how much fight is in them

Really? This is the off season...one watches the play on the field or practice field to see the fight. Not in a pie chart.

That pie chasrt comes out in looking back, as in the end of season and the lead up into the off season. Just as in a progression from Junior High to Collegiate levels, one still goes by what comes out on the carpet.

Statistical relevance is a course taken in pursuit of a degree. This item is used in monitoring flow, not establishment of a productive group.

That set up has a different set of criteria than forging an improvement and establishing new parameters of execution.

Maybe by mid-season. I don't see them contributing much if anything early in the season. I would guess that the probability is that 1 of the 3 contribute significantly to the team this season.

Our best bets are the rookies: Coleman, Bishop and Bush. These guys need to mature In a hurry for the defense to have a shot. Aging, injury prone, and inactive vets ain't gonna do it.

He will be a bigger contributor to our defense than that. It wouldn't shock me if he were starting by Thanksgiving.

you really do need an editor. But back to the subject of fight in the dog, you only really know that in real games. And those mentioned have not been in real games for a while. So how much fight is left in dem dere dogs is open to question.

I really am not able to project that by any other method than Murphy's Law in that scenario. I go by the talent that is accumulated in that group at the point they entered the NFL. The team has acutely observed their physical transformations back from injury or non-participation.

The age of that group, dictates that recovery is likely for the players. Now, we have to watch from 'outside' to see if they are individually able to accomplish the return to their ability potentials. Just believing in commitment and will of a rather young athlete still, at least I am positive in a committed American athlete.

There's a lot of functional pride in our country.
