"Quarterbacks completed an astounding 67.1 percent of their passes against the Cowboys – second highest in the NFL – with a passer rating of 94.1, largely thanks to Dallas’ lack of interceptions (nine)." Good for 26th in the league in passing yards allowed

Ugh, could you imagine how much different last season could have went with a decent defense/secondary. Pretty amazing we went 13-3 with that defense. I'm excited that they blew up the secondary.
that usully happens when teams are dinking and dunking and using up the clock on themselves coming up with 3 or 0 pts. wonder if u actually saw any game last yr

You liked the draft then no?

I was also mad we didn't address QB last offseason until the bottom of the fourth. So what do I know?

Still, I don't know that I was wrong, strategically. It sure worked out for them, though.

Sometimes the risk wins.

That's why you have to diversify. Maximize value of that year's draft picks and you minimize risk like we did.

In any strategy, luck plays a factor.

What I'm trying to say is, they won, so their route was "strategically" much more correct. Winners rule, losers drool.

Hey, as long as you hit, it tends to work out. I ain't complaining now. They killed it last year. :)

Disturbing:

Since 2000, 69 NFL players had 7 or more INT's in a season, not a single one of them was a Cowboy.

Only 1 Cowboy have had 6 INT's for a season since 2000, Anthony Henry in 2007. That is 1 of the 140 NFL players that had 6 or more INT's for a season from 2000 to 2016.

Brandon Carr had been our most prolific interceptor for all defensive backs these past 5 seasons. Twice, he got 3 for a season.

Over the past 5 seasons, a Cowboy DB had more than 1 INT for their season total............8 times.

And when Zeke and Dak have the team ahead by ten points in the 4th quarter, you get opponents passing more late in the game. That leads to more prevent defense where Marinelli doesn't care if you complete a ton of 5 yard passes.
This is a great point. Very overlooked.

No, man, I didn't watch a single Cowboys game at all. I just like to hang out on team forum boards and rile up edgy members like yourself!!

Haha. Some people get so serious on forum boards.

All I was doing was sharing information I came across about our secondary. That's it. Sue me.

I don't know what we're going to end up getting from the rookies this season, but it was time for a change. I really like the changes we've made on the coaching staff, so I'm expecting them maximize their talents.

Absolutely not.

It took our NCO Corp ten years to rebuild the Enlisted ranks, following Viet Nam. That took a lot of nose to nose confrontations, because some just wanted to go into the bush and kill...and not come back to garrison and soldier - training new soldiers. The full spectrum of leadership had to gain dynamics...just like this current group of coaches had to take the team through a transitioning period itself. That is exactly the storyline of Tom Landry when he was given the task as top leadership of the team.

They were 5th best in points allowed per game.
Bend but don't break defenses worth their salt are going to function better the shorter the field gets.

That is part of the issue as well. Sure, it was the talent. But the exodus of Carr, Claiborne, Wilcox and Church and a bunch of new rookies is not going to make an appreciable difference if the scheme itself is soft to begin with. Part of this is on Marinelli. I know it is not what people want to hear or even acknowledge, but eventually you can only blame the talent so much. The big plays that Ryan and Kiffin gave up may have been minimized, but teams know they can take smaller chunks that we are conceding with pretty good results. I feel pretty confident in saying that we have probably one of the more antiquated schemes in the league and a good offense will stress it and there is very little built in to respond. He does not like blitzing and wants front four pressure, yet insists on having grinders and scheme-sound linemen, interior pressure only comes from his one stud 5T which is about as hard to find as a true rush right end. People forget, his specialty is the DL and thus far during his tenure in Dallas, that has been the weakest part of the scheme in part because he is and has been satisfied with subpar talent.

Unfortunately, there will be a learning piece with the secondary which gives the defense another pass. Well, just had too many rookies. We will get 'em next year. Or something.

I dont know if you know this or even want to acknowledge this but every team in the nfl gets dinked and dunked on. Thats what the nfl rules are made for. Actually they are made for big plays, which teams give up all the time now. I dont know why fans say Dallas is a bend but dont break, when all 32 teams fall into this category because of the rules.

Dallas allows teams to throw inside because there are sure tacklers there. Its not about teams knowing how to attack Dallas def. Its about what Dallas is going to give that team. Learn the scheme then critique. If you watch the CBs their first step is always to block the outside and force inside. The problem had been when the S' were out of posistion and missed tackles. That was cleaned up alot this past yr. It happened a couple times last yr but the only one that hurt them was OBJ TD that was basically the winner in the 2nd Giants game.

This was why I argued all last season that people overrated our pass defense just looking at passing yardage allowed.
