DeMarcus Ware: Bill Parcells Wanted to Draft Shawne Merriman

This surprises me. I read a lot of stories that said Parcells wanted to take Marcus Spears with the 11th pick in 2005; but the War Room overruled him and took Ware. Parcells pouted about not getting Spears until he was still on the board at 20, where Dallas took him with their second first round pick (which they obtained from Buffalo the year before by trading out of the first).

So I assume Parcells liked Merriman more than Ware; but Spears was the apple of the Tuna's eye that draft anyway.

No matter how you cut it Ware was a better prospect than Spears and it would have been a big mistake had we taken at 11, Spears hell in 9 season in the NFL he had a total of 10 career sacks. Fact is BP is a great HC he is not a great personnel man. He threw a fit with Kraft in NE about buying the grocery I think NE purchasing of so called grocery has worked out great for them.

I always tune out anyone that thinks their OPINIONS are facts.

I have never said Jerry has not made bad choices he has but I am not that pig headed to avoid giving credit when it is due. I don't play that game where you trash people yet will not give credit when they do right.

I see the same thing happening to Garrett where anytime this team has success it is someone else as the reason but any failure falls on Garrett. I'm at least consistent I give him credit and blame since he is the HC I don't play this childish game of I don't like him there fore I will not give him any credit.
Two different stratospheres.......one can build a footballteam, the other thinks he can buy one.

Parcells walks on water for a lot of fans. Truth is, he couldn't draft an offensive lineman to save his life. Every guy he picked was a bust. He passed up so much talent to put together his 3-4 defense that was average at best. Could have had Ware and Aaron Rogers in that draft. Dallas needed a QB. But he takes a 3-4 DE high in the first round. Parcells wanted to shop for all the groceries but he had no idea what isle to start looking.

Huh? Parcells wasn't calling the shots in those drafts bro.

Parcells DID walk on water...in many respects. But I agree his college player talent evaluations weren't his strong suit.

He won a couple of SB's...but, I didn't think he was so great during his time in Dallas.

I think that's fair to say . . . I did admire the fact that he admitted that players tended to lose patience with him after a few years of failures. At least, he had enough self awareness to realize when it was time to jump ship. He just wasn't the same guy that won the SBs, though. Maybe old age just caught up to him like he, himself, suggested.

in my opinion Bill Parcels was a waste, that like playing mind games with his players and giving out colorful quotes

He did play mind games with most all his players. And almost no coach in history has so many lifelong friendships with his players.

Guy has a big heart too. He repeatedly kept in touch with Quincy Carter and tried to get the guy back in football.

A waste? LOL. Hall of fame coach. Hall of fame person.

They should have drafted Aaron Rodgers with their 2nd #1 that year. Nothing against Romo but Rogers at quarterback would have been awesome.

Bill Parcells made us relevant again. I'll always be grateful for him for that. He took us to the playoffs with Quincy Carter. Only a great coach can do that.

I don't think anybody thought Rogers was going to be as great as he was back then. And Rogers has won only one SB. There's no guarantee that he would have won any in Dallas.

Parcells did some things very well, but he always thought that he was the smartest guy in the room - always....some of the nonsense that came out of him was irritating....cranky, pompous, over-bearing, borderline elitist...that is how I see him and his time with Dallas...and he looks like he stinks of wet diapers (I digress)....

I thought he was outstanding. Turned the franchise around.
Agree basically his strongest asset was player selection. I was posting about his sideline coaching. It seemed to me that his confrontational style had come to an end in the big money NFL. I wasn't referring to his football knowledge.

That was my point. I thought his coaching style had gone out of style in the modern NFL. He was more old stlye.

Yeah, that was obvious. I think Jerry was under a lot of criticism at the time of the hiring and wanted to bring in someone that he felt had "credibility." Unfortunately, things didn't go nearly as well as he had anticipated. Bringing TO into the stable certainly didn't enhance their relationship, either. The original deal they made was for BP to have control.

That was a thorn in their relationship for Parcells, even though he denied that it was. When Bill failed to bring a championship to Dallas, it was the final nail in the coffin. I seriously doubt their relationship was as peachy as they both tried to make it appear. I also think Jerry might have paid BP "under the table" to make their relations appear better than they were and they agreed not to say otherwise. Just a hunch on my part, though.

Parcells did not want to draft him at 11 he wanted Spears that is well documented, Ware indicated they did not want him. Who is they? Well evidently they was not Ireland and Jerry they choose to select him so that leave 1 man who do you think? Damn you hate Jerry that bad? lol As I have said you or anyone else wants to blame Jerry for everything since he bought the team until today, fine he is the GM it falls directly on his shoulders no matter who is trying to persuade him, in the end it comes with Jerry approval. So Jerry did not want him but took him at 11? LOL

Believe what you choose

All thinking and rational cowboy fans should hate jerry jones the owner of the cowboys because

The worst GM in the NFL has been the GM of this team for 20+ years ONLY because jerry is the owner

A high school HC had been the HC of this team for 6 years training to be a HC ONLY because jerry is the owner

A person with no experience/training in player personnel is the director of that ONLY because jerry is the owner

No accountability
No discipline
Continued mediocrity

ONLY because jerry is the owner

Yeah, I'm not a jerry apologist like many if you
I like to face facts
