Demaryius Thomas - WR - Broncos

Mike Klis of 9News.com in Denver reports the Broncos have recently offered unsigned franchise player Demaryius Thomas a long-term contract that would make him the league's second-highest paid receiver.

Per Klis, who has covered the Broncos for a long time, the two sides have exchanged contract offers with less than 48 hours until Wednesday's deadline. Thomas is said to be seeking Calvin Johnson money and beyond at $16 million-plus annually with around $50 million guaranteed. The Broncos' offer, however, would put Thomas ahead of Mike Wallace's $12 million per-year rate and behind Megatron. Thomas may have to decide if he wants the security or play hardball for the money he feels he deserves and take another shot at it next offseason after playing on the tag.

-------------------------------------

With a contract deadline now down to less than 48 hours, the Broncos and Thomas' agent, Todd France, have recently exchanged proposals, according to multiple NFL sources.

The Broncos' offer is substantially more than the contract of Minnesota's Mike Wallace, who is currently the league's second-highest paid receiver with a deal that averages $12 million a year.

The highest-paid receiver is Detroit's Calvin Johnson, who is making better than $16.2 million a year. Contrary to reports, Thomas is not seeking Calvin Johnson money. Thomas is seeking a deal that would exceed Johnson's contract, according to sources

The Calvin Johnson contract (on a per year basis) represented about 13.2% of the 2013 salary cap. A contract representing 13.2% of the 2015 salary cap would be about $18.9 million per year annually.

If you simply gave Dez 16.2 million per year for 7 years (which is what CJ got), that'd actually represent about a 15% discount to CJ's deal relative to percentage of the salary cap.

That's the math these receivers are doing.

Not sure these receivers are smart enough to do those calculations...but their agents sure are

@MySportsUpdate: Broncos have offered DeMariyus Thomas a deal which pays him $12M annually.

You know dez wants 15-16. So does demarius probably. These teams are gonna have to bite it seems

I figure Denver would be more willing to over pay alittle bit with Peyton probably heading off into the sunset next year.

Calvin was due an incredible 26m on the franchise tag in 2013 and 31m in 2014.
Dez and DThomas are due 12.8m on the franchise tag in 2015 and 15.4m in 2014.

It is not comparable at all.

That guy is delusional. No team will give him close to Megatron money...

I'm not so sure....If the players were totally free to go wherever they wanted, it seems there is always a dumb *** with too much money and not enough sense.

If thats what Dez is holding out for, then I'd franchise him this year and next and say sayonara after 2016

I wonder how Messrs: Amandola, Boyce, Dobson, Edelman, Gibson, Harper, Krause, Lafell & Slater feel about those numbers.

All they did was win the Super Bowl last year.

If he were to hit the open market, he would get paid more than Calvin Johnson, without a doubt. The only reason the team can insist on not paying him that much is because the team has leverage over him with the franchise tag.

I think the Boys are offering Dez well more than that out of the gate so not sure where the collusion story is coming from. In the end, a player is only worth what someone is willing to pay him, all else is drama.
