I've watched almost every pass thrown to Dez this year on All-22 and most of the routes he has ran when he has not had the ball thrown his way.
Dez's main issue is that his hand technique is poor when he hasn't played or practiced in a while. He struggled with that early on. It happens every year and usually as he gets going and playing and practicing more it becomes good enough to get by. That's why Garrett always harps on Dez getting practice time in...when he doesn't practice his hand technique suffers and he doesn't have the deep speed to get away with it.
Up until the past 3 games or so, Dez and Dak were having issues with sight adjustments. And I'm as big of a Dak fan as there is, but from my vantage point Dak has usually been wrong on the sight adjustment. And the quickest way to discount somebody's analysis of Dez is when they talk about him being a 'poor route runner.' Particularly this season because his route running has been really, really good.
But what I don't like out of Dez is his technique catching the ball has regressed. He's made some uncharacteristic drops. Other than that, the biggest issue is what Romo said...you have to throw the ball to Dez differently than you do to most receivers. On a deep pass contested by the DB, you can't throw it long and expect Dez to run under it. Instead, you are better throwing it high and short, letting Dez win a jump ball battle. If you were near the goal line, normal WR's you could throw a corner fade or a back shoulder fade. But with Dez you want to throw a back shoulder high fade.
Even Tony took some time adjusting to having to do that with Dez.
So in essence, yes, he's overpaid. I do think he fits the offense well and I think there's plenty of tread left on the tire. And I wouldn't be so quick to restructure his contract because lately Dak and Dez have been much better on the sight adjustments and if Dak can develop a feel of where to throw to Dez...I can see Dez putting up some big numbers.
