Top 5 WR s (in terms of on field) have not typically been part of teams recently appearing in SB s. Therefore it might be a reasonable strategy to not have a WR on your team making top 5 WR money and use those dollars elsewhere
It's such a small sample size to draw any meaningful conclusions. More coincidental than anything. The Pats had Randy Moss, the Colts Harrison and Wayne, the Giants spent top picks on WRs. Larry Fitzgerald helped the Cards get there. Before that Michael Irvin and Jerry Rice were pretty good. So were Andre Reed, Art Monk and Sterling Sharpe. In the 70s Lynn Swann and Drew Pearson were pretty good.
Teams are built different ways, but a strong defense seems like the main force behind winning the Super Bowl. If a team has strong passing game though, they can get deep into the playoffs like the Colts, Pats, Broncos and Saints have shown. The only downside to signing Dez long term would be an injury and that can happen to anyone as we know too well.
