I say sign Pete Hunter to FS. He played lights out against us last week.

If you'll recall, in pete's last days here he said he was a CB, not a Safety. And took a stand that has gotten him... well... out of the league I guess. :laugh2:

I've said it once, and I'll say it again.....the biggest mistake we made last offseason was not signing a marque CB like Ty Law or Charles Woodson and moving Henry to FS.

Furthermore we had the opportunity to sign Dwight Smith when the Saints cut him and dropped the ball there as well.

If this issue isn't addressed once and for all this offseason than expect the same old song and dance.

If Roy is playing a freelance "rover", he better make a hell of a lot of plays to earn his keep. Because, basically, everyone else is having to take on extra responsibility in order to make Roy look good. And with one less defensive end or linebacker in the front 7, Roy better not get stonewalled by a 210 lbs. running back on a blitz pickup like he was so often this season.

maybe its trying to get the most out of the talent at hand...I know its an odd idea, since we havent been in the business of using our guys to the best of their talent/ability in years...but its something good teams/good coaches do...put guys into positions to make plays

I did hear the interview. Norm asked Jerry if they would consider moving Henry to FS. Jerry quickly answered yes, but that was the extent of the discussion concerning Henry. Norm asked Jerry if they would consider moving Williams to OLB in the 3-4. Jerry said that was going too far, but there are things they can do to move him closer to the line of scrimmage where he can make a greater impact. Jerry cited Pittsburgh as a team that plays their safety close the line of scrimmage and does different things with their coverages to compensate.

I hope that means there is talk of getting rid of that wimpy cover-2

It may be nearly a foreign concept around here, but there is absolutely nothing wrong in putting your playmakers in position to make plays.

And that doesn't mean that Roy would never have to cover. He's still a safety after all. But Roy isn't nearly as bad in coverage as a lot of fans and experts would have you believe. The problem is that in coverage he isn't as able to make those dynamic kinds of plays as often.

I would love to see Roy played more to his strengths. He can cover, help against the run, and do all of the good things he always has without being asked to play deep so much of the time.


And I don't think this is just about Roy either. I know he's the topic of the week, it seems, but what about all of the other players?

Wouldn't you like to see more of Ware rushing the passer and less of him covering? Again, I'm not saying he should never cover, but shouldn't he be used to his strengths?

Going back several years I have been envious of the way that other teams used their personnel. I would love to see more of that here in Dallas, and I don't care what the alignment is...

Well, I will just say this. If you are unhappy with the defense in some aspect, you don't turn it over to another guy who has little experience with the 3-4.

Hey if our front 7 was as good as theirs Roy could prolly just sit back and have a Starbucks most plays and we'd still do ok.

But I know, I know.. our talent is just as good.. it's just "coaching" that holds them back.

Arizona also ran a 4-2-5. They called it a big nickle. It also sucked.
What they and Atlanta had in common were bad players not a bad strategy.

I've thought for some time that the league was gradually moving to a 5 defensive back scheme as a base defense.
It's to the point where teams play 5 or more defensive backs about 50% of the time.

I like the 3-3-1-4 concept with a player like Roy Williams filling the 1.
He is a special player. He makes plays most DB can't. A defensive concept that excentuates his strenghts makes sense to me.

Don't know why some of you guys are so negative. Why should we change for Roy? Because he can't cover. blah blah blah. Roy sucks, Parcells sucks, Jerry sucks.
I think some of you need to turn in the Star and go find another team.

So I guess Pat Watkins "in a position to make plays" in this hypothetical defense by leaving him out there all by himself to cover the deep third so Roy can freelance. And then it would put DeMarcus Ware "in a position to make plays" by having to tie up blockers so Roy can free flow to the football without having to take on lead blockers.

No position stands alone on the defense. Everytime you take away responsibility from one player so he can freelance and "make plays" it means that other players have to pick up more responsibility and gives them less of an opportunity to make plays. Roy needs to prove that he's worth it.

Passing situations Roy needs to be used as a wildcard type player instead of 40 yards down the field in coverage.

Thats exactly the Roll I want to see Roy in.

Its not like the guy cant play safety.

and thats fine...and that probably how they should use Roy...several reasons:

1) put him at a LB type position in the nickel, and he doesnt have as much (if any) deep cover responsiblities...he can cover backs and TE's in the short areas...he can troll in the short zone areas and be an enforcer...he has some cover skills and can play in the short to intermediate area...he also has pretty good balls skills, but by doing this you limit how many plays he gets lined up on speed WR's down field in obvious passing downs

2) by leaving him at a LB type position on passing downs, you make it easier to disguise blitzes for him...the way they play him now, he almost always lines up deep, then comes up late and when he does that, its almost always a blitz (and its always a blitz thats easy to pick up)

3) who's better in coverage, Roy or guys like Ayodele and Bradie James? I'd much rather get those ILB's off the field, move Roy up there and replace Roy with a CB or a safety who can run...

as FYI, Darren Woodson played LB in the nickel almost exclusively his rookie year

The 2 things that scare me most about that interview with Norm:

1. Jerry was quick to point out that Barry won quicker than Jimmy.

This is true but he said it in a way like Barry was better than Jimmy. Doesnt Jethro realize Barry took over Jimmys back to back title teams and was basically gift wrapped a ring. Jimmy cooked the meal all Barry had to do was put it in his mouth and chew. I'm starting to lose hope that this franchise will ever win big again when we have an owner with a warped mind and flawed thinking such as this. In my mind the '95 Cowboys were the greatest Superbowl Champion of ALL TIME because they won it all while overcoming Jethro and Barry bumbling around. I mean how they won that year with those 2 running the show is beyond me.

2. Why is Jethro talking football and schemes, why is he talking about moving players to different positions, and talking about different def. formations he wants them to do. Why doesnt Jethro answer football questions like this: "Well Norm what we do defensively will be up to the coach who ever it is". I mean really what makes him qualified to talk these things, 3 straight 5-11 seasons, is he trying to run off any good coach who might be interested in coaching this mess? Hey Jerry, Just Shut Up.

I'll wait for the Jethro lovers to blast me, so blast away.
