Did You Have a Favorite Cowboy Who Wasn't a Star?

Mine would be Jim Jeffcoat. I was the happiest for him when we won the first Super Bowl and he got his ring. The man never turned in a subpar effort. He was always going full tilt. Don't know if he is considered a star by the Irvin-Smith-Aikman level, but I truly respected him and his game and always rooted for him.

Among my lesser known favorites:

Jason Garrett (mainly for the Thanksgiving game against Green Bay)
Kevin Williams
Eric Bjornson... anybody remember him?
Chris Boniol (before Philly got ahold of him)
Eddie Murray
George Teague
I am surprised it took so long for Teague to get mentioned. He is a cult hero here.

I second this vote. Jeffcoat was a superb dude. He and the lovely Ms Jeffcoat lived down the street from my sister in Carrollton during his plying days. Humble too, drove a little (not full sized) pickup truck... very community-oriented.

Being a soccer player as well as kicker/punter on top of my lineman duties in H.S., Toni, Effren and especially Rafael were some of my favorite players as a kid.

Growing up a Cowboys fan in Iowa and in an era without Internet or the TV media frenzy we have today, you were starved for Cowboys information and could only get it from national tv broadcasts or national magazines.

I had no idea of Septien's checkered past until I read a mention of it on here a couple years ago and then had to research it for myself to get the full story.

Bill bates was the bomb. I even took #40 for my high school football number. I'm still convinced he should be in the ring of fame.

Bill Gregory...........always underappreciated............ #77.

My wife would probably say Moose doesn't fit in to this category. She thinks he was the team. :laugh2:

She's full of baloney.

Dat Nguyen, without a doubt. Loved the guy.

Favorable mention to Larry Brown as well.

Favorable mention to Larry Brown as well.

Everyone has a right to their opinion so I'm NOT knocking you for yours.

I've just never understood the love some people had for Larry Brown. I always thought he was slow and lacked technique to be a NFL caliber CB. In the SuperBowl I thought he was lucky and in the right place at the right time for those interceptions. Albeit, extremely glad he was.

When the Raiders signed him to that big FA contract after the SB I never thought he would live up to his SB MVP performance.

Russell Maryland.

Loved him so much as a player that I got a customized jersey with his name and number on it.

Hard to list any of the players from the Jimmy era since even the backups played like starters and were All-Pro caliber much of the time.

I liked that some have mentioned Garrett...We all love the coordinator but as a QB I always felt confident when he came off the bench.

Going back, loved Ron Springs a lot...It's been fashionable of late to talk about the player in light of what he went through but as a player in his day, I always enjoyed his contributions...Always felt he could've been an even more productive back in someone else's system...Loved his running style and effort.

I used to really enjoy that young crew of DBs when there were hard times in Big D for a while...Michael Downs, Ron Fellows and Dextor Clinkscale

Mean Eugene 'The Hitting Machine' Lockhart was more of a novelty LB than a guy that had lasting impact but for a while it was nice to see a Cowboy lay a hit.

And there was brief 5 minutes of glory that Lincoln Coleman had where I thought he might have a future in the NFL

In more recent times, I typically despise the golden domers but I really enjoyed Anthony Fasano a lot...I think he'll do well in Miami

Miles Austin is one of those guys I really pull for and was happy to see him get a shot as a returner...He may be out now but always a guy I was pulling for.

What qualifies as a non star? If you mean a non-starter, I will go with Butch Johnson. If you mean a lesser known, quality starter? Darrin Smith.

Not to hijack the thread but concur, completely...I was ecstatic when he was signed by the Raiders that summer...I thought, they have NO idea what they are getting (err, NOT getting).

Just goes to show you how good a DB can look when you've got great safeties, deadly pass rush and #21 on the other side of the field

Remember the shoestring tackle he made to preserve the shutout against the Rams in the '78 NFCC?
