Did You Have a Favorite Cowboy Who Wasn't a Star?

Of course Bill Bates. But I really liked Dennis Thurman and Kelvin Martin (K-Mart)

:laugh2:

Thurman is one of mine as well that I forgot to mention. Same with Tolbert and Ellis.

I really liked Joey Galloway, I hated trading two firsts for him but I liked him being a Cowboy.

Does Dexter Coakley count? I always enjoyed watching him play.

and Brock Marion is another guy I liked.

Scott Laidlaw
Preston Pearson
Walt Garrison
Robert Newhouse
Anthony Dickerson
Aaron Kyle

I liked Harper right up till his last game here vs SF in the NFC Championship game (the one we lost)...he sulked and basically was going through the motions, then was benched because he was playing so poorly...after the game he was in a dejected Dallas lockerroom yelping it up about how he couldnt wait to leave and get his huge payday...then of course he turned into a mega bust in Tampa

its too bad that draft day deal in 1994 didnt work out...he was part of a trade up (St Louis I think) that was gonna get us Willie McGinest, but New England took him before (seemed like that was a surprise that day too)

David

Your memory on this is better than mine. I do remember this now. I was sulking a bit after this game too. I think I was too mad at JJ to be mad at anyone else that day.

Along with names already mentioned I'd add Butch Johnson.

A lot of the candidates don't really fit the question, but that's cool because we've had some good memories to share.

Short career was part of the criteria.

Sorry, I was in a hurry when I read it earlier...

Woody Dantzler - I always wanted to see him used as a RB and running the option play.

Err, I have to confess I didn't carefully read the body of your post, or I obviously wouldn't have chosen Jethro Pugh. He had a nice career-- though too many regrettably only associate him with ONE play in ONE game.

As for why I liked him. It's hard to say, really. And my dad always used to laugh at me for it. He was a Bob Lilly cheerleader so...

I always liked Reggie Swinton.

Brock Marion

Five years with the 'boys 6 with Miami... His best years seemingly with Miami. Overall he was a good player and was cute to boot.

I dont know about the whole cute thing, but I always like Brock and was pretty irritated when they let him get away.

How bout short Cowboy career?

That way I can list Preston Pearson too :)

Billy Parks, Ron Sellers and Otto Stowe. Loved those WR's.

Claxton Welch - backup RB, liked the name, the underdog role, etc.

Reggie Collier - loved the speed and mobility at QB.

Dexter Clinkscale - name!

And I know there are more I'm forgetting.

If brevity is the key, then:

Patrick Jeffers
Jackie Harris
Randall Cunningham

Among my lesser known favorites:

Jason Garrett (mainly for the Thanksgiving game against Green Bay)
Kevin Williams
Eric Bjornson... anybody remember him?
Chris Boniol (before Philly got ahold of him)
Eddie Murray
George Teague

I was so bummed when we let Jeffers get away, he had a lot of potential, just couldn't stay healthy with the Panthers though. Signing Deion to that fat contract took up all our available cap space and we couldn't match Carolina's offer.

Except Dallas signed Rocket Ismail to a high contract in return. Essentially they traded the two receivers and ended up with the better deal since Jeffers unfortunately suffered a pretty major injury his second season in Carolina.

Kenny Gant.

Him and Thomas Everett both those guys played lights out when it counted in the Super Bowls and playoffs

Both where good players nothing great but man guys like them helped us win

Jay Saldi & Robert Newhouse - I remember getting an NFL magazine when I was 12 and featured an article about several Cowboy players with physical stature "records" in the NFL. Jay Saldi supposedly had the largest hands in the NFL and they had a life size photo of his hand that spread across both pages in the center fold. Robert Newhouse was also listed as having the largest thighs in the NFL.

The article also listed some of my favorite players at the time: Ed "Too Tall" Jones as the tallest in the NFL and Randy White as the strongest. So that article cemented those two "non-stars" as favorites too.
