Directv is charging certain customers, subscribing to Sunday Ticket Max, $1,800 a season, atop their regular programming package prices? I find that highly unlikely.

That's not likely at all. I believe the Sunday Ticket Max is something like 350 or so a year. Its no where near 1800 dollars.

Dude, I said $300 a season. I already clarified that. Where are you getting $1800 from?

My bad. I saw this:...and did not read your subsequent posts.

My bad. I didn't realize a said per month. Anyway $300 a season is still more than I'm willing to pay. The year I got it there were only 6 games not televised. That's $50 per game. I could've just went to a sports bar every time and still saved money.

As far as calling retention, it depends on who you speak to. Some of them don't budge even if you threaten to cancel your service. So be careful how far you go with some of them.

This is true, I always read stories of everyone getting the ticket for free just by calling customer retention, but everytime that I have tried it, and told them its just too expensive, and Im leaving, cut off my service, blah, blah,,,, they respond with OK sir, we are terminating your service on the following date. At that point I have to roll over and act the fool, and tell them I will just stay with them. I dont know if Im just a bad negotiator or just bad luck with service reps, but this never has worked for me, and I have payed full price since the inception of the season ticket.

You need to be prepared to carry out your threats or else they will laugh it off. Furthermore, it's probably on your account record that you have called and you have always stayed. You either have to be firm and cancel the service then sign up again in 3-6 months as a new customer so you can get the benefits or your negotiation tactics needs to be a little different. Maybe instead of saying you want to cancel, play the I've been a loyal customer for xxx years and my friends who just signing up seems to be getting much better deals than I. Maybe you can offer me certain customer loyalty discounts.....etc etc..... . Play the nice customer card instead. You may have already tried it.

Like someone else said, if you're under one of those 2 year contracts where you have to pay $20 for each remaining month if you cancel, they probably won't budge because they know you don't want to pay that money.

I'll do ya one better. Call and tell them that if they don't want to give you NFLST for free then you'll cancel your service and have your wife call in for a new account and install the next day. It's, technically, a new name and a new account. Not a damned thing they can do about it.

I tried all of that, they did not care.
I had ST from 1997 until last year. I was tired of the constant outage or disruption, blurred pictire in the slightest rain. Plus I was traveling and the person staying in my house wanted u-Verse, as I had been wanting to switch for several years. From 97 to 2004 I paid $8.99 a month for service to get St & pay per view movies. Then paid the yearly fee for ST.
In 2004 i went full package on DTV.

Then as I traveled for my work again. I payed $50 extra to get on my iPhone, iPad, and laptop. So when I called last year to get rid of the service, but wanted to reatain the ST & pay per view service. But the rep did not explain to me the options. I explained all I wanted was to have St on my laptop, I didn't need the home service. All she did was insult me and basically told me I was stupid for getting rid of the service. So I told she was an idiot and to cancel everything. so she did, and did not put me through to the retention department.

So I called back, talked to someone else, told them what happened. For one, they did not apologize for the stupidity of the person I originally talked to. Then told me I am eligible to get St for free foe one year, if I sign a 2 year contract and a minimum of $35 plus tax, plus all their other fees like a box that I don't need, if I only use my laptop. I told them they were idiots. They said they don't have the $8.99 service fee just to have an account anymore. That's after they called me back. once again, said to sign up for 2 years, again I told them they were stupid.

I bought a Slingbox, hooked it to my TV. So no matter where I am in the world, I can watch whatever channels I get at my house. and all for FREE....just the initial cost of the slingbox, at it works great. I know that don't help those outside of the DFW area, but it works for me. I just can't see some of the other games I want to. But firstrowsports web site, you can watch them for free. just have stupid ads and pop ups now and then.

It was like $250 for the season. Now it's $300.

I just called DTV this morning.
I've been a customer for 11 years, have multiple TVs and max coverage, and pay over $200 monthly. The cost to add ST Max was quoted at $329.99 for the year.
Non-Max was $90 less. You only get the Red-Zone channel with the Max plan, and that's essentially all I would use since I have no problem getting the Cowboys, and I don't do the fantasy stuff. They would not budge on the price, and I refused to pay that much.

You have to play CSR roulette. Keep calling until you find one that will play ball.

Thanks for the advice.

It seems that they assume I will pay the inflated rate since I am a regularly high-paying customer, rather than working with me due to my loyal track record.
If the CSR is essentially a salesman, I can see how the offered deal may vary.

The best thing to do is just say "cancel" when it asks you want you want to do. Once you get on with a retention specialist, just explain that you have been a loyal customer for X number of years and you don't think it's fair that new customers keep getting Sunday Ticket for free. Just tell them flat out that you want it for free, or you will go with brand X for your TV service, since you won't be buying Sunday Ticket anyways.

It doesn't matter. There's nothing they can do about a customer canceling service at one address and "another customer" signing up for service at that same address. Absolutely NOTHING they can do about it.

It only works if you're not under contract. I just got the FREE Genie whole home DVR hookup. If I cancel, I have to pay $20 for every remaining month which is $480 which is more than ST so I'm pretty much stuck. I'm really satisfied with the Genies though. I will try to get a discount for long-time customer though.

Edit: And don't forget the CyberBob post. I may be able to cancel ST anyway.
