That's sad. I will say it's purely the parents fault though. Sounds more like the school just refuses to do anything about it.
They can expel the kid. There is nothing the parents can do about it. Just document it all and bring them up and get them expelled. Pretty simple stuff. This usually doesn't usually play out because you have weak minded councelors and principles all pro-parent this and pro-parent that, that they just won't do anything about it.

My son loves me, but he fears my wrath and would never even raise his voice to his teachers. He knows exactly what's waiting at home for him if he ever does. Kids aren't shown consequences enough. All they hear is threats and dead air. You can't threaten. You have to immediately nip the disrespect everytime it raises its ugly head.

The courts also have schools scared to death.

It all starts at home.

Some parents are just as bad as the kids are though.

They freakin can't! They fear a lawsuit which they'd probably lose in todays society.

I'll say it again. This country has ZERO ACCOUNTABILITY. ZERO.

/rant. sorry.

True.

That's what I told her, however she's one of those people that wants to make a difference.

I have been throwing the private school idea out there the past couple days but she wants to give it at least one school year before making drastic changes.

I've always wondered why the inner-city schools and such were in so much disarray. Obviously, they didn't start out that way when the school was built. Why build a school if the financial means aren't there to support it? I realize many of these schools were erected several generations before but I still can't wrap my mind around how all of this can be chalked up to "well, it's a poor neighborhood, there's no county/city support, etc."

It's the perfect recipe for teachers to fail and puts them at risk. Surely I don't want my girlfriend around this crap but if everyone keeps running away from it, how will it get better? I know I am sounding naive but the situation is just ridiculous.

Oh, by the way, she has a 7th grader in her class that is pregnant. Just found that out yesterday. Unbelievable.

I hope this doesn't turn political, but here goes.

Inner-city schools are the way they are because of socioeconomic situations of the working poor and lack of funding for the school. Too many single-parent families, not enough parental involvement, and too many bad outside influences from the neighborhood. Many of the parents grew up themselves in an environment like this and don't know how to not suck as a parent. Its a cycle that feeds itself.

The only way to fix the problem is to change the situation. Nothing else works. EIther parents have to start caring, kids be made to start caring, ridding the neighborhood of the criminal element and giving kids something else to do besides the streets....none of which are easy and some are impossible. You can mitigate the problem by throwing money at it effectively, but that only goes so far. These schools don't have enough good teachers, and there's no incentive for good ones to go there because there's not enough money to pay them. Classrooms are overcrowded, minimizing teacher-student interaction and classrooms start becoming more like a daycare, a place for your kid to "be" during the day, more than a learning environment.

Um, they were 6 and 7. You just don't do that. I hope they win. I'd be tempted to ask for more just so I could get the 100K.

I agree with you on this. People need to understand the developemental level of child. I don't know about any body else but what 6 or 7 year old does not talk. These kids could have PTSD like symptoms from this. If they were constantly talking, thenthe teacher could have easily separated them or just send them to the office.

It just goes to show how poorly trained a lot of our teachers are and how society would rather lock them up than help the child better themselves.

I mean they are there to learn... about themselves even.

I don't think teachers are being trained to deal with threats and/or actual violence towards them in the classroom.

Probably not... but you might have a better chance of not being threatened if you find common ground. With reading and language, that's easy to tie into rap. I mean, the trick would then be to keep the language clean. It sucks that it's her first year, but at least she's getting a taste of what actually goes on in classrooms.

Teachers should be paid a lot more, but somehow we don't see them as important and like you said the jobs aren't as abundant as they once were.

I would ask the principle to sit in, perhaps. But that may exacerbate things too. I'm with you. The threats aren't cool. But the key is finding a solution and in the end maybe the kid finds help before he ends up being in prison for real. You can't just go around in life acting like that. But he may have no other role models, a bad environment and no other people to teach him how to behave.

Home life is 5x the importance of school life to a kid, most times.

Advanced Reading? Kid probably can't even read properly. WTH is he doing in advanced reading anyway?

Give him some Archie comic books and tell him to sit in the hall.

He is also probably one child who should be left behind, or dropped off on some old country road somewhere and told to figure it out.

"Cant be nice in school?" "Want to threaten your teachers and instructors?"

"Beat it Kid!"

Fend for yourself

That's a job for me. Thinking up punishment for little dirt-bags like this kid.

That's part of the problem. Behavioral issues does not equal stupid. Nor should you turn your back on any kid who obviously needs help.

Oh so all of the ones wanting to help him that he is saying he is going to kill, should just ignore all of those threats and hold him tighter?

I don't think I have the patience for anyone threatening to kill me and harm my family.

You must have patience galore. Go to FL. and save this kid, will ya?

Meanwhile schools in India, Korea, China, and Japan are getting tougher on students and they are taking over the high tech world. We are saved only by our vast Graduate program that brings these kids to America where we hope like hell not to lose them to back home.

Much is made of Asian students' domination in math and sciences, but what most people here dont realize is that those are the kids that actually GO to school. India and China (and many other asian countries) are full of poor that don't even send their kids to school.

This dude is always on the major networks now.

I've seen him on so many different shows that it isn't even funny.

And yes, he does make sense.

The education system of the US is disgusting.

Under the lawsuit the family is asking for $100,000 in damages, claiming that their son, a victim of the discipline, has suffered “personal” and “permanent” injuries brought on by the trauma of the situation.

:laugh2:

I don't know about $100K in damages but that guard stepped way over the line with the handcuffing and threats of a 6-year old. That is a crime and if anyone did that to my son (4 years 11 months) they would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and a civil suit to boot.

Ignore the threats, no. Try a different method, yes.

I don't think I have the patience for anyone threatening to kill me and harm my family.

It's a young man, a 7th grader I think he said. Patience is hard to come by with this age group. But I suppose that's why you're not a teacher and she is.

Also, tough to compare her situation to that of the 6 and 7 year olds. It's a bit different I'd say.

You must have patience galore. Go to FL. and save this kid, will ya?

I'm passionate about kids and learning... I was a troubled kid and I ended up accomplishing things no one ever thought I would accomplish. In other words, the right influences can steer you in a different direction.

Good news...the punk has been suspended for five days and is a major candidate for expulsion per the principal.

Shelley told me she noticed a difference already when this punk was not in class. Amazing, huh?
