If Philly beats San Fran and Dallas loses.....

Eagles 7-1
Cowboys 3-4

That's four games back in the win column.
The win column is irrelevant as you control the win column. The only column that ever matters in any standings, at least where teams play the same amount of games, is the loss column.

Even in your scenario, they would be 3.5 games back, not 4 games back, but again, the Eagles will have a bye and if the Cowboys win (whihc they can control) that game, that means even with a Commanders loss, they would be 3 games back with two games against the Eagles still remaining.

It’s hard to add anything after @Reality’s reply but clearly it’s an important game but not a must-win.

Right now we’re 2.5 games behind the Eagles and we have two games left against them. Though it would be detrimental, we could even lose both games to the Skins, as long as we beat the Eagles twice and handle the rest of our schedule, the NFC East title is totally within reach.

While true, this team isn’t fighting for a division title. Still doesn’t make your OP any less right, E.

Well, if the Cowboys can't beat a team with 15 players on the injury report that lost twice to the Eagles twice already when healthy......

The division will be over.

Not even close. It means much more for the Commanders than it does for the Cowboys. If Washington loses they will be 0-3 in the division whereas Dallas will be 1-1.

Division record won't matter if you aren't tied for first in W-L column at the end of the regular season.

I'm an optimist and you never know what will happen as the season progresses. The Eagles lost two good players on their team for the season this past week. If the Cowboys had Sean Lee they may have won one or two of the games they lost. There are several variables that can alter the expected outcomes of games.

As I stated in another thread, I think the Cowboys are a flawed team, both in coaching and on defense, but player performance and injuries can have an even larger impact on the outcome of games.

The losing team Sunday is, for all practical purposes, out of the race for the NFC East.

The Cowboys can't afford to be four games behind the Eagles in the win column. Philadelphia has home games against two struggling teams, the 49ers and Broncos, in the next two weeks before their bye.

Meanwhile, Dallas has two road games at Washington and Atlanta sandwiched around a home game against Kansas City.

Then, Dallas plays Philly on Nov. 19th at home with the Eagles coming off a bye. The Cowboys can not afford to be more than two games back when that game arrives.

Or kiss the East good bye.

The division (and probably the season) will be on the line every week for the rest of the year. Do they have to win out? No, but we won't know which games are truly must wins until the end of the year, so we have to treat each game like the season hinges on it.

The season wouldn't be over because the NFL is just awful. Worst I've ever seen it. Every team is average or worse.

We just witnessed 4 shutouts in the past five days. Offensive lines are absolutely horrendous. Linemen come into the NFL now having never put their hand on the ground in their life. Many have never even been in a huddle.

It's a fugly league.

Its been a pass happy, highlight driven, red zone channel league for awhile.

Then why make the comment about people rushing to declare the season over? He didn't say if we lose the season is over. We could still make the WC if we don't win the division.

If we are talking about "control" then yes, this game is a must win. If the Cowboys lose, they have no control anymore. Because even if they sweep Philly, they would still be one game behind. So if we want to talk about controlling our destiny, this is a game they have to win. They lose and you are back to needing help beyond you sweeping the Eagles (which is probably a tall task as well).

If we lost both games to the Skins that would give us 5 losses. Even if we swept the Eagles, that would only be 3 losses for the Eagles.

We would be two games behind and that's assuming we win all our remaining games. We would then need two other teams to beat Philly.

I mean if people want to toe the line of impossible and say anything is possible, sure. But in reality, there isn't a frog's chance in hell this team can win the division if they lose to the Skins twice.

It will matter if Dallas stays in the hunt. Much better to be 1-1 than 0-3.
