Everyone is aching to see whether Roy Williams can indeed step into Terrell Owens' vacant spot and become the Cowboys' No. 1 receiver this season. Troy Aikman believes that if Williams doesn't produce, the trade would be nothing short of "one of the biggest busts in the history of the league."

When asked Tuesday if Williams was ready for the No. 1 receiving role, Aikman said, "Well, he better [be.]

"I don't think you can give up what the Cowboys gave up for somebody and not make that a sure bet," Aikman said. "This isn't like drafting a No. 1 receiver out of the college draft and then saying, 'Well, we think he's got all the skills to be a great player for us.' He's been in the NFL. He's caught balls in the NFL. They've got a lot of tape on him, and they had the ability to talk to a lot of people who had coached him, played against him, played with him.

"If Roy Williams doesn't turn out to be the player they thought he would be when they made the trade, I think this would be one of the biggest busts in the history of the league."

So not just the biggest trade bust in the history of the Cowboys. The entire NFL? Here's where ol' No. 8 drove his point home - perhaps too close to home if you're team owner Jerry Jones.

"I just think that when you have the chance to evaluate a player to the degree the Cowboys were able to and then to give up what you gave up," Aikman said, "if he's not a No. 1 receiver and not a highly productive player for this team, that's a huge flaw within their scouting department."

Aikman: Roy Williams trade could be worst in NFL history

Hall of Fame Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman is not sold on wide receiver Roy Williams.

"I don't think you can give up what the Cowboys gave up for someone and it not be a sure bet," Aikman said.

The Cowboys gave up first, third and sixth-round picks for this month's NFL draft in the October trade for Williams. In 10 games for the Cowboys in 2008, Williams had just 19 receptions for 198 yards and one touchdown.

"I think this would be, if Roy Williams doesn't turn out the be the player they thought he'd be, this will be one of the worst trades in NFL history," Aikman said.

Aikman, when asked if it would be worse than the Joey Galloway trade, in which the Cowboys gave up two first-round draft picks in a last ditch effort for another Super Bowl run with Aikman at quarterback, said it would be worse.

Aikman said the Cowboys' personnel department has had lots of evaluation time on Williams, a University of Texas product.

"If he's not a number one receiver... that's a huge flaw in the scouting department," Aikman said.

Now, to be fair, Aikman could be forgetting about the Herschel Walker trade. I don't think many folks in Minnesota will ever find a trade worse than that one.

Aikman talked more than just Williams, including an assessment of current quarterback Tony Romo.

"I think part of his recklessness is part of what made him what he is," Aikman said of Romo.

He says, despite the chemistry challenges of last season and potentially lacking a top receiver, Aikman says the Cowboys have a lot going for them.

"I still think they're an extremely talented football team," he said.

Aikman was speaking after an announcement that Wingstop Restaurants, for which he is a pitchman, will be the official wing vendor at the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

WFAA-TV's Arnold Payne contributed to this post.

I don't think it could be much worse than the Joey Galloway debacle.

IMO.

Those comments tell me that Jason Garrett wasn't the #1 guy wanting to trade for Roy Williams.

Jerry and the scouting dept made that trade happen.

One of the biggest bust trades in the history of the NFL?

Those are exceptionally strong words.

Another factor in how spectacular a bust it would be is the fact that we got rid of T.O. because we thought we still had a #1 WR on the roster.

I think its safe to say the Herschel Walker debacle will never be equaled.

That said, you also need to look at how productive what you gave up turns out to be.

I think Aikman's comment is premature and over the top. No matter how the Roy11 deal turns out there are bad trades made all the time. I think you look at the Dallas player personnel record overall, not a single deal.

I guess I am not sure why someone would make such an incendiary statement. Surely Aikman knows the game. But to come out and say something like this seems a bit over-the-top, to me.

The proof will come next season.

But you could make that statement about every trade or free agent signing.

Haynesworth decides to rest for the length of his career and not put out the maximum effort his contract warrants, does that make him the biggest bust in NFL free agency?

I would at least expect Troy to temper his comments with the opposite side of the coin and say something positive to balance this statement.

The Saints gave up a 1,2, & 3 for Steve Walsh.

The Vikes gave up the top of 3 drafts for Herschel Walker.

Dallas gave up 2 #1s for Joey Galloway.

This trade could turn out awful, but it won't be anywhere near the worst ever, not even if Roy Williams turns into Rae Carruth.

The Galloway trade would not be worse? Two 1sts is worse than a 1st and a 3rd any day (the 6th and 7th are a wash). Galloway didn't have the best QBs so I'll give him a pass, but his impact on the team wasn't all that. Let's wait and see how Roy pans out before we put the lid on the coffin, Troy.
