It's a no brainer. You can cut a stud receiver because of his mouth, you can do the same to an average journeyman DE/OLB.

Excellent words... Could not have said it better myself

Since when did cutting aging vets become such an issue?

Eddie, every move is an issue. There is a need for drama.

We cut the guy who lost his leg in a car accident? We can't do that, who will be the inspirational leader?

What's it going to be then, eh?

It is always traumatic in Dallas to do this. That is part of the issue with Jerry Jones, he usually clings onto veterans with tenacity. It is usually a year or two too late. And unfortunately, it is after signing them to a damaging extention that he usually has to deal with after the fact.

For a man who loves to pride himself on risk-taking, once he feels secure with the player, he swings to the complete opposite end of the spectrum and clutches veterans to his bosom and won't let go until he absolutely has too.

Journeyman? What other teams has Ellis played for?

Judas isn't familiar with the meaning of that term. He's used in incorrectly several times...and been corrected....but no dice. Sharp as a bowling ball.

I hope you weren't eating Flaming Hot Cheetos. I found out last week that is the worst thing to throw up ever.

Can Cowboys afford to get rid of Greg Ellis?

Ending Greg Ellis' decade-plus tenure with the Cowboys makes financial sense. The team would create more than $5 million in cap space if they can trade him, $4.15 million if they cut him. That cash can be put to good use (direct deposit into DeMarcus Ware's account as part of a massive signing bonus).

Does getting rid of Ellis make football sense? Seems like it's too early to tell.

The Cowboys are confident that 2007 first-round pick Anthony Spencer is ready to step into a starting role. He's an upgrade over Ellis at this point against the run and has the potential to be a good pass rusher. But Spencer missed four games last season, when he was a part-time player, due to knee and hamstring injuries. What happens if he gets hurt?

The Cowboys drafted a pair of DE-to-OLB conversion projects in the fourth round. Ideally, they would combine to play about 20 snaps per game on passing downs. If Victor Butler and Brandon Williams are pushed into bigger roles as rookies, they could be exploited in the running game, which LB coach Reggie Herring acknowledged as a facet of the game in which both fourth-rounders need to improve significantly. Justin Rogers is also on the roster, but he's a solid special teams player who hasn't played a significant NFL down on defense.

That's why it's a little surprising that the Cowboys appear ready to move on from Ellis right now. It seems like the Cowboys would have benefited from monitoring the development of their draft picks during training camp and the preseason before making this decision.

Maybe they're doing Ellis a favor, allowing him an opportunity to spend the bulk of an off-season learning his new team's scheme. Or perhaps they figure its best for all involved to cancel this edition of the annual Greg Ellis Summer Soap Opera before it gets rolling.

Signs were pointing in a direction that the Boys were moving Ellis to more DE in 4-man front situations. So, taking a $6.25 million cap hit for a part-time player (see #38 Roy Williams) doesn't make sense.

The problem with that is that it is wrong.

The word "Journeyman" comes from the building trades. Electricians, plumbers, framers, drywallers, etc. A journeyman is someone who travels (hence the word journey) from job to job working for a contractor. Usually a "day worker."

Ellis has been here his whole career. Not a "day worker." Therefore he cannot be a journeyman.

Oh and if you doubt this, ask any contractor what a Journeyman is. I've been in the trades for 12 years.

Enjoy the link, no charge for the lesson.

Forget the money. This has been my worry since talk of getting rid of him surfaced again this year. Sure, He's one twitch away from exiting VR every year due to his not so popular personality when the helmet is off. However, when the helmet is on he's still a very good player. I'm still worried about whether or not Spencer is ready to take over the spot full time. He hasn't done much to prove so when it matters thus far in his young career. I would have been more happy with keeping Ellis and seriously mixing Spencer in this year to give him a nice little test run and then make the decision after this season if he panned out. Hopefully he's ready because it looks like Ellis is about to exit stage right.

I can't forget the money. We can do too much with it that helps this team. Keeping Ellis means either Victor Butler or Branden Williams is put at risk to be lost to another team. I'm not willing to do that for a 33 year old malcontent, even if he can rush the passer.
