I really don't see a difference in play other the INT's Fumbles Pass deflections and sacks. In 07 he had to sit a game so some where explain where the deterioration of play is coming from.

...his numbers haven't fallen that much, and much of this has been blown out of proportion by "fans", as his play hasn't been nearly as bad as most make it out to be.

However, there is no question his play has slipped. He isn't the playmaker he used to be, his tackling has deteriorated, and the big hits have virtually disappeared. He could be replaced next year with little problem IMO.

Watch the games. His play has been declining for the last couple of years. Initially, it was just coverage, but he isn't even tackling very good anymore. Forced fumbles and sacks have fallen off as well.

Exactly... Ellis doesn't need to go around spreading private locker room talk...

It seems that Ellis tries to do anything he can to tear this team apart mentally, but continues to play well to keep his value up for trade or cut...

But he's a "team leader" and a "good guy". Unfortunately, he gives the media plenty of quotes, so they won't rip him.

Like Roshi always says, if Greg Ellis is a team leader, its no wonder they fold at the end of every year. Mentally weak.

I'm hoping Thomas cures some of that.

That the think are the big hits really that important when it comes to the actually number he is putting up. He isn't the play maker he used to be this isn't the same sorry team we used to be trotting out there.

In this case, I have no problem with him doing this. In fact, I kind of applaud it. That's long been a problem with this team ... everyone is too nice. Everyone is too afraid of making waves. Everyone is afraid of calling people out. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a team veteran publicly calling someone out who's not pulling his weight. Public humilation can be an effective motivational tool (assuming the player in question still has some pride). We've had too much pointing fingers at coaches and schemes on this team and shifting blame ... players need to start being held accountable.

Yep, the game has changed. Look at Adam Archuletta. He looked like a great player his rookie year, and now he's been released after bouncing around 3 teams in 3 years. Michael Lewis went from Pro Bowler to out of the league in a couple of years. The "in the box" safety is a dinosaur.

People say safeties can't cover TE's. Darren Woodson and Lawyer Milloy used to cover slot WR's in the nickel. The game has changed. When Roy came into the league as a rookie Tony Gonzales was in a class by himself as far as althetic TEs. The rest of the Pro Bowl TE's were bigger, lumbering, sure handed guys like Wesley Walls, Bubba Franks and Chad Lewis. Now Gonzales is just one in a pool of athletic H-Back/WR hybrid TE's. Almost every team in the league has one, and the ones that don't are trying to get one. This division alone has Witten, Cooley, Shockey and LJ Smith. You just can't afford to put a safety on the field that's a complete liability in coverage. There's no way to hide them. NFL Offensive Coordinators are not stupid, and they're paid a lot of money to find ways to isolate guys like Roy Williams in coverage and pick on them. Safeties in this league have to cover in the NFL these days, period. You can't scheme it, wish it, pray it away.

There's a difference between covering a WR and a 6'5 antonio gates with the speed of a WR and who can jump out the stadium. No one can match up one on one with these TE's now a days it's best to play zone or something one on one is a death sentence. See what Dallas Clark did to Champ Bailey.

I agree, but only if Ellis has actually addressed Williams in person first.

Well leaving the gym by 7:30 a.m. isn't exactly going the extra mile... especially when You've been called a fatass for the last two years.

Player A: 2 INT's, 0 FF, 1 Fumble Recovery, 0 Sacks

Player B: 3 INT's, 0 FF, 0 Fumble Recovery, 1 Sack.

Player A is our Roy Williams, paid All Pro money to make game changing plays.

Player B is Chris Crocker ... the Dolphins just got him off the NFL Free Agent bargain bin a week before the draft for 1 year, $1.5 million contract after the Falcons released him. (And unlike Roy, Crocker is actually a pretty nice coverage safety who covers a pretty good amount of ground). Who's getting more bang for the buck?

It doesn't bother you that Roy Williams isn't playing noticablly better than a guy who was just released from the 4-12 Falcons?

You can put a lot of weight into tackles .. I think they're pretty much a garbage stat completely subjective. Players can get a tackle credit for just standing near a pile. Besides, I don't consider a "tackle" a positive play when all it means is you managed to trip up a guy after he just scorched you for a 20 yard pass.

Why does sacks matter at the safety position? Who has my tackles PD thats such a vacuumed assessment of two players it is ridiculous and ludicrous to even consider that as valid.

I understand what you are saying their is a correlation between weight gained and play deterioration as the weight goes up the level of play goes down.

Fit him well...hmmm

I know what would fit him well!

Hey Dough Boy Roy try an XXXXLG

while you're at it, try rededicating yourself to the
game. Try not to eat that big pay check you get every game week with a side of complacency ...

The image of Ellis and Roy sitting over a beer, moaning and complaining to each other is priceless.
