One player was the 5th overall pick in the draft and the other went completely undrafted.
Player A is Roderick Hood and Player B is Terence Newman. Who would you rather have?
Looking at those statistics alone for judging secondary is just ignorant.
I'm not defending Roy here, but if you're going to criticize a player, at least don't be stupid about it.
Good call. I was thinking the same thing. You could apply such a comparison to nearly every position and to a number of players at each position.
Look at some of the players on the Dallas roster. Romo, Barber, Hamlin, Ratliff. All those players before last season were working on rock bottom deals and you can compare any of those guys to the top guys at their position for last season and I bet Dallas got the most "bang for their buck".
Im not defending Roy and will readily admit hes been playing poorly. I wouldn't however go out and trade him out for Chris Crocker. Maybe I'm being a homer and too much of a Roy fan but I think he can play at a higher level and I expect that he will have a better year. No player wants to be the weak link on the team. For his 1st 2 or 3 seasons, Roy was one of the best players on the entire team. Did he get complacent and start to take things for granted and neglect what got him there? Maybe. In fact, if I had to guess, that would be what I think has caused him to lose his edge. Combined with a shoulder injury last year and you see a more reserved player whos whole game was geared towards never slowing down and running through people and he couldn't do it anymore. I know I never saw a injury report for him but beginning in Buffalo he started hanging that shoulder and it was there for the rest of the season. Call it an excuse, call it what you will but Im convinced he was playing wounded last season.
All that said, Im giving the guy another year. Not because I have a Roy Jersey hanging in my closet (if I did, I'd be pissed at that number change) but because I know that if he can regain some of the form he showed early in his career, it would be one of the best things that could happen to the team. Wishful thinking or not, Im holding out hope for another year. Stupidity, delusional or just homeristic, call it what you will but if it doesn't work out, at least I'm not one of the few who refused to give up on a player who sucked like Jacques Reeves, Quincy Carter or Julius Jones. And at least Im not one of the hopeless few who jumped head first into the Drew Henson orgy and never came out.
