Every single Ellis play

Greg Ellis is listed as an OLB, but he was in a three-point stance every time he was on the field against the Rams. That's because he was used solely in the Cowboys' nickel package.

"I wanted more," Ellis said after the game, "but I'm glad Wade stuck to the plan."

Ellis managed to make a major impact despite participating in a grand total of 14 plays -- 10 third downs, two second-and-longs, a first-and-goal and a second-and-goal.

The results weren't pretty for the Rams with Ellis, who had 1.5 sacks and two hurries, lined up at left defensive end. Those 14 plays netted 29 yards and a turnover. Follow the jump for the Ellis play-by-play:

Third-and-7 -- Quick slant off three-step drop to Torry Holt for 11 yards; Ellis blocked by TE and RB.
Third-and-19 -- Incomplete pass; good pressure by Ellis against single block by RT.
Third-and-15 -- Draw to Travis Minor for loss of 1 (tackle by DeMarcus Ware); Ellis blocked by RT.
Third-and-8 -- Incomplete pass; Ellis blocked by RT.
Second-and-10 -- Personal foul facemask committed by LT Alex Barron vs. DeMarcus Ware, who blew by Barron in a 1-on-1 matchup; Ellis blocked by TE and RB.
Third-and-23 -- Quick slant off three-step drop to Isaac Bruce for 24 yards; Ellis blocked by RT.
Third-and-5 -- Incomplete pass; Ellis slants inside to create room for blitzing CB Nate Jones, who hits QB Marc Bulger.
Third-and-8 -- Sack by Ellis for -7 yards; beat RT with speed rush and hand chop. Ware shifted to ROLB before snap and got good pressure after beating RB block.
Third-and-10 -- Incomplete; Ellis blocked by TE and RB.
First-and-goal from 7 -- Sack by Ellis and Marcus Spears for -3 yards; Ellis bull-rushed TE.
Second-and-goal from 10 -- Ken Hamlin interception; Ellis dropped pass into coverage in middle of the field.
Second-and-11 -- Hook off three-step drop to Holt for 8 yards; Ellis doubled by RT and RG.
Third-and-7 -- Quick slant off three-step drop to Holt for 12 yards; Ellis cut by RB.
Third-and-7 -- Incomplete; Ellis blocked by RT.

I've noticed Nate Jones does pretty well rushing the QB from the outside. Seems to be our best CB blitzer by far.

Spears just piled on the sack by Ellis. He should of had 2.

Been saying all off season on dcfanatic's radio show that I would use Ellis as a situational pass rusher and on the DL, not OLB.

Ellis, Spencer, Ratliff and Ware are all able to bring the noise. Should be fun to watch as the defense starts to gel.

Yeah, that's really the best case scenario. It keeps both of them fresh. Having Greg Ellis rushing the passer with fresh legs in the 4th quarter should provide quite a few big plays late in the season.

With Tank coming in, this front seven will have unreal depth: Ellis, Hatcher, Burnett, Carpenter, and Tank. All could be starters -- very highly paid starters -- elsewhere.

It also allows you to have Spencer, Ware, and Ellis on the field at the same time, it is less stress on Ellis achilles tendon, and it rotates more fresh bodies.

Like you say, the front seven can be dangerous.

Dat true.

With the big leads we are piling up we will be needing another pass rusher to rotate in. Hopefully Ellis is the answer.

Oh yeah... It's going to be a beautiful thing. :)

For years, we haven't had much of a pass rush. Now -- especially when Tank gets going -- we might have not just a pretty good one, but a VERY good one.

The first Ellis sack came out of that Chaos formation that was talked about in a post last week. Everyone was moving around prior to the snap except for the NT.

Wrong. Spears grabbed Bulger a split-second after Ellis grabbed him, and they both brought Bulger down to the ground. It was far from "piling on."

I like that formation. They had Spencer and Ware on one side and Ellis on the other with Ratliff as NT. Imagine the possiblities.

On November 3rd, Donovan McNabb is going to come down with a horrible case of the flu.

I just want to commend you for sticking up for Spears. This is the second thread I've read where you've come to his defense. I don't think Spears has been that bad either, not great but certainly not horrible.

Agreed.

I could see Ellis staying in this role for the next 2-3 years ala Jim Jeffcoat, Fred Dean.

It's not about "sticking up" for anyone, it's about getting the facts straight. If Spears had jumped on Ellis when Bulger was on the ground but somehow got credit for half a sack (a.k.a., a Merroidman special), I would have said so.

I think the biggest thing overlooked by the Ellis contract situation is that Ellis has probably been ready to go for the past 4 games (as was indicated by Wade in some of his PC's) and was only holding out to decide on what to do re:L his insurance policy. Couple that with the statement above and the fact that he has about 10mos of rehab under his belt makes me believe that Ellis is as close to 100% as he could possibly be.

When Ellis kept saying he just wasn't there yet I was of the mindset to write him off as a liability to the team once he came back. that has since changed to now believing that ellis will play a key role in this Defenses success. 1) his injury doesn't seem to be an issue, 2) he will be fresh down the stretch with having not played the first 4 games, the bye week, and only being a situational player, and 3) He seems to be motivated/reinvigorated to have a very productive year. This may be the best scenario that could have ever played out from his achilles injury. The only thing I think JJ should have done with Ellis' contract is to add more performance incentives to up Ellis' motivational level to its peak.

Expect big things from Ellis for the remainder of the year!!! Book-it!!

Yes, he flew in there one time and I thought he had a chance.
