The Cowboys gained a season-low 45 yards on the ground in the loss to New York.

That doesn't mean they were ineffective.

Quarterback Tony Romo threw for 392 yards, three touchdowns and wasn't intercepted. He was sacked only twice in 55 attempts. Since the Cowboys averaged only 2 yards per rushing attempt and had several negative runs, Wade Phillips suggested you could argue the Cowboys should have thrown even more.

Here is what offensive coordinator Jason Garrett had to say.

"They blitzed the run a lot throughout the game,'' Garrett said. "There was a commitment there.

"I felt we did a good job moving the ball in different ways. I thought Tony did a really good job of reading through progressions in the passing game. I thought our line protected well against a very good defensive front. We were able to move the ball on them.

"Obviously, you would like to have a consistent running game. But they were so strong in their commitment to shut it down, we had to be able to do something else. We were able to do that.''

While our OL blocked well up-front, does that include the rushing attack where Barber was consistently getting hit by two people who broke into the back-field? You would thing, with the size of our OL, you would power-block more often, so that you wear down the line by the fourth.Did Garrett mention how the Giants pretty much did the same thing last time, defending the deep pass as well... Garrett, thank your lucky stars you have Romo to avoid the rush, to compensate for your pathetic passing attack.

I agree. Dallas pounding the ball at a run blitz is only going to result in 3 and out. If a team is willing to sacrifice plays in the secondary in order to stop the run then only a fool would bang their heads against that wall. Dallas was able to move the ball and put up points we also had 52% success rate on 3rd down conversions.

Mention of why Barber is the only one who can get a consistent touch would be nice.

Litterally, I've never see a player fight harder for less yardage. He just looked pretty bad.

Our game plan wasn't the problem against the Giants.

It was the mistakes that a NFL team shouldn't make that cost us the game.

Garrett was calling screens in the 4th quarter....

I bet we find out at the end of the year that he has a hole in his leg from that injury early in the year.

But yes its time for Felix Jones to get a Julius Jones type of opportunity.

I did not have a problem with the playcalling on Sunday. We threw for almost

400 yards and had the ball for almost 40 minutes. When you have those kind

of stats, you should win the game. We lost that game on a breakdown on

special teams, a defensive breakdown and a very costly fumble, ironically

when we were trying to run the ball.

So? If a team blitzes than you can hit a screen for a big play at any point in the game whether it be the 1st quarter or 4th quarter.

Phillips Happy With Doug Free vs. New York
Posted by jellis at 12/7/2009 5:21 PM CST on truebluefanclub.com

Connecting the obvious dots, it would seem Doug Free playing at right tackle this time created some difficulty for the Cowboys trying to get their running game going Sunday.

After all, the Cowboys ran for 251 yards in the first go-round against New York in Week 2, when they were fully healthy and regular starter Marc Colombo was in the lineup. Free admits he's more of an athletic type, with the consensus being he's a better pass protector than run blocker.

Wade Phillips, for one, didn't think Free was to blame for the Cowboys struggling on the ground in the Meadowlands.

"Free played pretty well, I thought," the head coach said. "I think he graded out probably better than any of our offensive linemen this past game. He did a pretty good job."

Both Phillips and Jason Garrett said the Giants' run blitzes were effective in bottling up Marion Barber, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice, limiting the trio to just 45 yards combined on 23 carries.

"They run blitzed a lot," Phillips said. "It opened up the passing game. We saw that. A couple of times we ran right into where they were coming . . . It was a situation where it looked like we needed to throw it. I’m not sure we shouldn’t have thrown it more, really. The bad runs we had, if we’d been throwing it, it might have been even better."

If your in shot-gun formation all the time, you limit your run options genius...

I don't see how we can throw the ball 55 times and people are okay with the game play. Who da **** lines up in shotgun on the 4 yard line. Garret has zero confidence in the run game. He's quick to abandon the run.

We ran it 23 time and no not always out of the shotgun and with the Giants using a run blitz quite often all we were getting was short yards. We put up yards, points and was able to convert 3rd downs what is stupid is running when the defense is allowing you yards down field and you still run.

and if they stone every run play from a regular formation, and you struggle to pass protect up the middle, thats why you go to a shotgun, genius

I suppose you'd be thrilled with 10 or 12 more runs of 2yds each?

Like I said the other day, enough of this crap. We arnt a consistently good running team. Even in the Raiders game, we averaged just over 2.5 yds a carry on all but 4 rushes.

I agree with that game plan Dallas would have been trashed. Giants gave up opening in the passing game only a fool would avoid taking what was there for the taking. Dallas mistakes that cost us had nothing to do with the offensive play calling it had to do with giving up some big plays on defense and special teams but I guess when a person is agenda driven they can't see that only other explanation is flat out stupidity.

I am pretty sure that Ginge fell right into the Giants hands. Its getting to be well known against us, stop the run, and wait for the inevitable self destruction.

Your right (sarcasm). We run shot-gun all the time, because they are stoning every run play and we struggle to pass protect up the middle, although we start shot-gun from our very first series... You think we are being forced into shot-gun this much? BTW, Garrett only knows one way to counteract pressure and that is the 2 tight-end set...

If that's the case, then heads should roll. If Dallas is playing a guy who isn't and won't be 100% when they have at least 1 fully healthy, possibly 2 fully healthy backups, someone should lose their job.
