James Marten cut to make room for Mike Jefferson

Tim MacMahon

Mike Jefferson was promoted from the practice squad, giving the Cowboys four receivers for the season opener.

OL James Marten, last season's third-round pick, was released. He is eligible for the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Peace yur tooth Marten. That makes it official...horrible draft pick.

Congrats to Jefferson....although...if he plays, I hope we're not going to see the ball bouncing off his chest anymore.

Pretty bad when your 3rd round draft pick gets knocked off the roster by an UDFA.

This is very encouraging. For this staff to cut a third rounder not only lets you know they'll do what they need to do roster wise... but that they're comfortable enough and secure enough to do so.

It lets you know they're not just keeping guys because they were a high pick.

Do we know how to draft o-linemen or what?

Something that definetely needs to improve.

I trust that our scouts will correct this though. They always do.

I agree 100%. I was alluding more to how much Marten actually sucks.

Well, hopefully Free still develops. He showed some promise last year before getting nicked up.

Ouch.

Hmm Marten reminds me of someone else....hmmm...a certain someone took alot of flack for that...

On another note, I am dissapointed. I thought marten would move over to left guard and be the player he was in college.

I hope we dont cut mike jefferson in a week. That would really make the marten pick horrible.

The thing about Free is he is a above average pass blocker and average at best run blocker at this point in his career.

His balance and feet for his size is impressive and just jumps out when you watch him. Hes an athlete for sure.

I just don't see him as Colombo's replacement if they let C go after this year.

I don't know that I would call cutting last year's third round pick 'encouraging' but I agree that I'm glad that they don't let pride or fear of potential criticism stop them from doing what is necessary.

I think this move was inevitable and I don't know why they didn't do it sooner - as in final cutdowns.

Marten was a poor fit for a Hudson Houck style line, and McQuistan and Procter may be as well. If the opportunity presents itself, I'd like to see the team continue to churn the backup offensive line positions.

Wow, some serious spin going on here to try to minimize the fact that we made another terrible high round offensive line pick. But I guess there is little use in crying over spilled milk.

Geez, I guess that makes it official that Marten can't play a damn worth his draft status (3rd rnd).

Hudson Houck does like bigger, more physical lineman.

I don't expect us to resign Coloumbo after this season (although I wouldn't be against it). That leaves McQuistan and Free for RT next year as this point.

I don't think it should be ignored or minimized.

In retrospect, it was a huge mistake.

But better to realize that mistake sooner than later.
