Wow, some serious spin going on here to try to minimize the fact that we made another terrible high round offensive line pick. But I guess there is little use in crying over spilled milk.

I don't think it's spin. Everyone agrees that to let a third rounder go without having played a live down, it's a waste. The positive side is that the coaching staff is not trying to force it and are cutting their losses now.

Exactly. Get rid of the bum now.

This is very encouraging. For this staff to cut a third rounder not only lets you know they'll do what they need to do roster wise... but that they're comfortable enough and secure enough to do so.

It lets you know they're not just keeping guys because they were a high pick.
While that is true and a really good point, it still feels as good as a sharp stick in the eye.

Note that this puts Jefferson at #6 and Amendola at #7 at WR now. Marten clears waivers Danny's career in Dallas may be over. And if they sign the Vet QB, we have another cut coming, probably Ball or Carpenter.

I'm not sure I see any spin. These are all the same comments I regularly read about Marten.

Cowboys Add Jefferson; Cut James Marten
Posted by nickeatman at 9/6/2008 12:02 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

As expected all week, the Cowboys officially added a fourth wide receiver to the 53-man roster Saturday morning, signing first-year pro Mike Jefferson, who will travel with the club today to Cleveland.

In doing so, the Cowboys released offensive lineman James Marten, a third-round pick in 2007. While it’s rather early to be giving up on a second-round pick, Marten just never showed much consistency and was nowhere close to pushing for a starting job this year.

Now the Cowboys will likely try to retain Marten on the practice squad, if clears waivers. But being a first-day pick last year, Marten might draw some interest from other teams, especially with his versatility to play both tackle and guard.

But the Cowboys just had to get another receiver to the game to join Terrell Owens, Patrick Crayton and Isaiah Stanback. The club is without Sam Hurd (ankle) and Miles Austin (knee), who were both injured in the preseason. Even Stanback isn’t 100 percent, but has practiced all week with a harness on his left shoulder.

The Cowboys opted to cut Marten over a defensive back, although the Cowboys have 11 players in the secondary.

But there are some health issues there as well, led by cornerback Terence Newman, who apparently re-aggravated a groin injury this week and his status for Sunday’s game remains questionable. Newman has been limited in practice this week and head coach Wade Phillips said he will likely decide whether to play or start Newman just before game time on Sunday.

If Newman can’t play at all, Adam Jones will start at left cornerback and rookie Orlando Scandrick would likely be the slot corner in the dime package.

I just don't see him as Colombo's replacement if they let C go after this year.

I thought so too, until I saw Minny's third stringers zip right past him.

At least they cut him instead of trying to force it to work. If he had no chance of playing at all, get him off the roster. I don't care what his draft status was, if he CANNOT play, quit wasting his roster spot.

We have Houck back........our drafting of OL should improve tremendously.

Besides, if we can re-sign Colombo and if Holland works out at LG.....our OL should be solid for the next 2-4 years. So that would give us plenty of time to find young OL to groom as replacements.

As for keeping Walden......who cares about him. I would have rather kept Oglesby. Hell, we could have had Biscuit bulk up about 10-15 lbs and play OLB for us.

No spin here... just talking about something different that the Martin draft pick.

The Martin pick was clearly a bad one and something you'd like to avoid as a team. Not that huge of a deal though. It isn't surprising that of the 100% of the OL we drafted (Martin and Free) only 50% are actually players (Free). I'd say that's probably the NFL average.

However, from a staff and front office standpoint, it is nice to see that we don't hang on to a crap player just because we used a high pick on him. Nice to know that the people we DO have on our 53 man roster are really the guys who this staff thinks can help us and that there aren't any on there who won the spot based on where they were drafted.

Getting him off the roster in and giving that 53rd spot to an UDFA proves that.

That's what I saw that was encouraging.

James Marten was a waste of skin - not to mention a draft pick.

It was either him or Tony Curtis probably, since both have become 3rd stringers. I suppose Curtis has more upside or trade value...depending how you look at it.

Do you hear that?

It's the rest of the league laughing.

I think getting rid of Marten was a good start.

Now I'd like to see McQuistan bumped for former Lion and Texas OT Jonathan Scott.

I think Scott would be a nice prospect as a swing tackle and the guy has experience at both left and right tackle. The biggest 'knock' on him is that he's been injured. But strictly as a backup, I think he'd be a nice fit.

McQuistan has shown me he's gotten worse rather than better.
