Jerry owes Ellis a meeting

DE-turned-LB Greg Ellis is voicing displeasure with his situation for the second consecutive off-season. He wants to meet with the man who signs his check, and Jerry owes Ellis a man-to-man chat.

Ellis, a team leader for the last decade, has earned the right to have Jerry hear him out. That doesn't mean Jerry should tear up Ellis' current deal, which pays him $2.5 million this season and runs through 2009.

Ellis has zero leverage. He'll be 32 when the season starts and is coming off a serious injury, although he looked great while working on the side during minicamp. And Ellis is all too aware that the Cowboys are about to pay big money to his eventual replacement, first-round pick Anthony Spencer.
I understand Ellis' urgency. He'll probably only sign one more significant contract, and the non-guaranteed deals in the NFL force veterans to be selfish.

But you'd think it'd be in his best interest to wait until after he proves he can still play to negotiate. And Jerry has the right not to give Ellis any choice but to do so.

Yhea, Jerry does owe him a meeting,
A very quick where Jerry Talks and Ellis listens.

Jerry: "Ellis close your dang trap, rehab, and then play football. If you dont like it find me a trading partner, if you can, which I doubt." Meeting over.

Maybe I just missed it, where does Tim McMahon make a case for Jerry OWING Ellis a meeting?

I agree. Ellis should play until his contract is up. I think Ellis is a good leader for the younger players, but he knows after 2009 Dallas may not resign him.

I'm always amazed at how far being nice to the media will get you. Charles Haley isn't in the Pro Football Hall of Fame for no other reason than he despised the media and had nothing to do with him. Meanwhile, Greg Ellis makes the local media feel like they're his close buddies and he's got them acting as his de facto agent and publicist. That Clearance Hill article in the FWST was shameless.

I am an extremely biased Cowboys fan, ... I find that I like'em all.

Even Owens and Switzer. :laugh2:

You won't find me talking bad about our players very often, if at all.

But all of GE's whining is wearing thin.

Even if he has a valid concern, take it to Jerry privately.

Old, over-the-hill Ellis has already made himself a whiney baby.
If I am a young player, I am staying away from this whiner. And listen and be led by the coaches.
