I doubt with Jerry's penchant for draft day manuvers that we'll sit on all 11 but this does need to be a good draft esp without the first rounder.

If we could afford all the other needs and Peppers then great. I'm a firm believer that your front seven is more important than your DBs in today's NFL.

I don't know if Chung will be there in the third. I don't know the others.

Exactly..all the more reason to move up and have 2 2nd rounders..I'd take Sean Smith and Ron Brace..three positions quickly filled(S,NT,DE with Rat moving over to DE). I think with that many picks we should get quality and not quantity. I'd like to see us only drafting 6-7 players.

We're not going to sign Julius Peppers people.

Or Albert Haynesworth.

Or Ray Lewis.

Or the Oakland CB that nobody can pronounce.

DeMarcus Ware is the only impact player this team will be signing this offseason.

Local radio station around here today believes that Gross will be signed to a new deal before the deadline. Then they will tag Peppers.

They also believe that once this happens, the Panthers will get a 1st, 3rd, and more picks in return. What they seem to forget is that if Peppers doesn't want to play for the team with the best offer, he can simply say no to signing a contract with them. As I have said before, the Panthers are in a bad spot with this Peppers thing.

Not to mention that the Panthers can tag him with all the tags they want, but before they can trade him, Peppers would have to sign the offer.

He won't do that until the last minute.

It'd be fun, but clearly spending tons of money to increase our league-leading sack totals isn't exactly at the top of our priority list.

I doubt Dallas has the picks or money to get him. It'd be nice though.

It'd also be nice to see the younger guys develop like Spencer and Marcus Dixon

No one is attacking the credibility of the unnamed source on this one huh?

Column here in SC says Peppers already turned down Jarred Allen type money from the Panthers. It's either a sign of how bad he wants out of Carolina or how much money he thinks he deserves.

Cowboys | Peppers willing to be traded to team
Wed, 18 Feb 2009 16:01:15 -0800

Mike Cranston, of The Associated Press, reports Carolina Panthers DE Julius Peppers would be willing to be traded to the Dallas Cowboys, according to a source.

Nothing new, just thought it belonged here

Wow..really? Makes me think he's not ALL about money. Looks like he's pretty committed to being an OLB.

We got a spot for ya Mr. Peppers here in Big D!

looking at the roster, this are the guys who would need to be straight out cut ( or traded ):

( I'm only assuming their current contract status, so if I'm wrong, somebody, please, correct me ):

DE: Greg Ellis = saves 4 millions against the cap
SS: Roy Williams = saves 2.22 millions against the cap
CB: Anthony Henry = saves 3 million against the cap ( if cut before March )

Just on those 3 players alone, the Cowboys could save a little over 9 million dollars. That should be enough to sign Pepper to a new contract. ( The rest of the roters is made up, mainly, of players making too little to make a difference OR players who have signed recent extensions and cannot be released ).

HOWEVER ..!!!!

You must take into consideration that the Cowboys would have to create room ( using whatever room they have now PLUS restructuring existing contracts ) for:

1) Ware's extension
2) tagging Miles Austin ( Unless they renounce his rights )
3) create room for signing draft picks
4) create room for signing players like Kevin Burnett and/or other FA to fill the roster.

IF, and I put a big emphasis on " IF ", the Cowboys have close to 10 million dollars right now in free cap space BEFORE cutting anybody and BEFORE restructuring anybody, there's a posibility that signing Pepper could be accomplished. If they don't, then it would be extremely difficult, almost next to impossible.

Oh, and that's without taking into consideration what the Cowboys would have to give up in a trade. You can forget about adding Anthony Spencer ( the most logical piece on the roster ) to any package because the Cowboys would take an over 3 million dollars cap hit if they move him this year.

In other word, if you want this to happen ( and part of me is dying for it ) you better pray that Stephen Jones is God's son and not Jerry's.

IF Peppers really wanted to come here AND he didn't demand a record-setting contract (he'll still get a huge deal), who would you be willing to let go/trade to make it happen?

I'd trade/cut Greg Ellis.
I'd see if there was any interest in Anthony "Bar Brawl" Spencer.
I'd trade/cut Anthony Henry.
I'd ask Roy Williams to take a pay cut and if not, release him.

Ellis just wouldn't be needed anymore. Spencer would not get as much time to develop so moving him for a draft pick would make sense but if not, he's a valuable reserve. Henry is a cost cutting move. He just isn't worth what he makes and with the pressure Peppers and Ware would be applying, Mike Jenkins will be just fine back there. Same deal for Roy. His coverage issues will still be there but he'll be covering shorter routes.

if we move spencer which we won't we would have no backup outside linebackers

There isnt a guarentee that the Panthers would get a first rounder for Peppers. Teams arn't going to give that up AND pay him a ton of money...

If I were you, I wouldn't put any money on that bet.

If Peppers would clear, for example, the Jets, or Atlanta, or Chicago, they'd give up their #1 + AND pay Peppers while jumping for joy..

Also you can always move spencer back to end.

Moving Spencer would be splitting hairs..he counts 3 million against the cap if moved. Ellis,Henry and Roy all need to go without a doubt..it's really a no brainer.

Having Spencer playing third downs would still have him be a factor on the team..not to mention him spelling Ware and Peppers..he could still see the field alot.

As long as our Safety position and ILB positions are under control, I don't mind Peppers. Also, we need to take a deep long hard look at the OLine at some point, more specifically the Tackle position.

I wouldn't be hell bent on dealing Spencer. I would just see what kind of interest there would be. If he could be dealt for a starting RDE or RILB or a draft pick that would net us either of those, I would consider it. If he causes a $3 M cap hit then he obviously stays.

I'd live to see him at ILB on some plays just to have him, Ware, and Peppers all on the field together. Someone mentioned him moving back to DE..I don't feel he could play DE in a 3-4 at all. Unless, it was as an occasional pass rusher.

He would definitely be an OLB, he would be minimized as a 3-4 DE.
