Michael asks; Troy answers

Barry Horn E-mail News tips

Michael Irvin had Troy Aikman on his ESPN radio show today at a North Dallas restaurant. My favorite moment came when Irvin co-host Kevin Kiley mentioned that Aikman and Joe Buck were recently named America's second best NFL broadcast team by some publication. It had Al Michaels and John Madden No. 1. "Oh please," said Aikman-fan Irvin said, almost under his breath.

Now on to Cowboys talk:

Aikman on Dallas Morning News sources dogging Tomy Romo's practice habits:
"I know this: There was never a source that said Michael Irvin doesn't practice hard. There was never a source that said Jay Novacek doesn't work hard. And so somewhere in there somebody doesn't think that (Romo) is doing what it is he is supposed to be doing, which I find hard to believe only because I've had the opportunity on a number of opportunities to visit with him. I've talked to him before a number of games in production meetings. He is a real historian when it comes to the game. It's important to him. He wants to be good. And I think that he's got skills that are very unique..."

More on Romo:
"I think maybe things happened so quickly for Tony in terms of obscurity to all of a sudden national spotlight that he hasn't fully grasped what being the Cowboys quarterback is all about. And you don't go to Cabo the week before a playoff game. You just don't do it...To say 'I don't worry about perception,' you better worry about perception because it is a big part of making it through some very difficult times...I just thought you never wanted to give...anyone reason to think you didn't play well other than you just didn't play well."

Aikman on Cowboys chemistry: "I think the biggest concern, which has been well discussed, is the chemistry of the team. I don't want to speak for you, but I know that the teams I have been a part of that have won championships by and large have been talented teams. You can't do it without some talented players. But you also have to have some chemistry...and I know there are some guys who were members of those teams I was talking about who will tell you chemistry is not important....I tend to think (these Cowboys are) a team that does not enjoy playing football together."I

Irvin said he "went through the roof" when he heard Romo downplay the importance of the season-ending loss to the Eagles. Said Aikman: "I don;t know after a game like that when you are trying to win and get into the playoffs...I don't know that at that moment you want anybody putting life into perspective for you."

And finally, Aikman:
"At the end of the day it doesn't matter what your style or what your approach is as long as you win...But when you lose everything is open to scrutiny."

Aikman also never played in the era where ESPN became the National Enquirer... The media only had begun to touch the surface when Irvin came frontin' with his fur coat to the court-room, after being accused of whatever he was accused of...

No but it is the media who is mostly to blame for the majority of Cowboys fans acting like 'the sky is falling' morons.

:laugh2: at Cowboy fans who don't realize the Cowboys went 9-7, missed the playoffs and are in complete disarray.

That sky fell after the third 5-11 season. It hasn't been tacked back up in the sky yet.

This Aikman guy sounds like a wise man. Even left himself an out at the end, to put it all in perspective.

He's probably accomplished a thing or three in his lifetime.

Yeah a winning record is awful. If we're bad then how does that rate the 20 teams that did worse than us. The Giants went 9-7 before they won their recent SB and people were acting stupid in NY/NJ just like the people in the metroplex. Coughlin was an idiot that couldn't handle the players. blah blah blah.

Things are never as good or bad as they seem to be. But you keep on eating up what your being spoonfed by the media. I'll keep my opinion on your perspective.

I think the 2nd longest NFL streak without winning a playoff game, behind only the Lions, probably has something to do with it.

Troy Aikman makes alot of good points. I especially like his comments regarding how nonone ever leaked a statement to the media that that Michael Irvin or Jay Novacek didn't practice hard. I don't care what "Media Age" you are in, much like Terrell Owens, Michael Irvins' work ethic was legendary and it would have been absurd to run a story saying the guy was lazy. Besides, even with all the scrutiny on Terrell Owens, you never hear anyone say the guy doesn't practice hard.

I believe there is some in the organization that do question Tony Romo's work ethic but you have to wonder if this is real or perception.

Also, I know Deion Sanders is one of the guys Troy Aikman is referring too when he says some players didn't think Team Chemistry was important. Deion Sanders did an interview on Fox's NFL Pre-Game Show when he had just joined the Commanders and he stated that he thought Chemistry was overrated. To quote Michael Irvin, I remember Terry Bradshaw "going through the roof".

And how does any Cowboy fan have anything to do with the performance of the team or Tony's attitude toward his job.

The media is an excuse. Jerry begs for attention and he gets it.

I absolutely love Aikman's work. No one does it better, he is a bright guy that understands personalities and respects talent. He's starting to get more comfortable and isn't afraid to take shots at guys if they aren't working hard or playing poorly, ergo Roy Wi11iams every single time he broadcasted one of our games.

I really hope Romo stops trying to build himself up as this uber-naive aw chucks kind of player. Romo is a bright guy, which is why I'm concerned that he shows only two emotions - total giddyness high-fiving referees or pouting like a child hanging his head.

This is his team, and ihe needs to lead by example - poor practice habits however, are about the worst report that can come out about a QB. Aikman is dead on about this, as usual.

You do realize that the Dallas Cowboys have went 9-7, 3 out of the last 4 years right?

By that logic, we should have already won a Super Bowl.

It is completely naive to try to make a case that we could be like the New York Giants.

If Troy said this then I believe it to be true. Now if Romo would adjust his attitude to fit his work ethic we would be golden.

This is a sad reality. The million dollar question is... How do we get them excited to play with each other again? The obvious answer is not the answer.

We can! We can! We can!

They got rid of Tiki and now we just have to get rid of T.O.!

Someone call Jerry. At least it's a start.

I recorded most of this today...

This Troy Aikman clip from his appearance on The Michael Irvin Show today is hot off the presses, or radio, or computer...

Aikman talks Romo, Cowboys

I agree with Aikman on just about everything he said in here.

Romo is still learning how to be the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. I would like to hear that Aikman reaches out to him this offseason so he can help Romo out in some ways.

Here's Aikman talking about Jason Garrett and what he needs from a head coach...

Aikman talks Garrett/Head Coaches

Seeing that Aikman and Garrett are great friends you can't expect much criticism from Troy about Garrett, but I thought his comments about needing a head coach who can stand up and demand attention from 53 angry players speaks volumes about why Wade has to go ASAP.

Aikman talks chemistry being important

We have been over it a million times that there is some kind of divide in this locker room.

And I can't see how the problem gets fixed if all of the same players are in the locker room when the 2009 rolls around.

That last part with Irvin loving him some Aikman nearly brought a tear to my eye.

Ok, it did bring a tear to my eye.

I really miss the good ol' days!

A 'winning record' is all it takes to satisfy those willing to lower their standards to fit whatever they're given. For this team to not even make the playoffs (not to mention get embarrassed when it counted) is a disgrace.

Newflash! The sky did fall. And as long as the current bunch is in charge, it won't get repaired any time soon.

But you keep running out and buying those 9-7 T-shirts, OK?

And don't talk about anyone being spoon-fed anything when you're willing to accept the inferior product the current Cowboys are 'feeding' you.
