DMN Blog: Miles Austin Update/'Boys practicing Felix/Marion on-field package

Running routes and hands. Routes can be learned but hands....
He has never shown the ability to consistently catch the ball. Sure he makes flashy catches like the one in the OTA. BUT for a WR first above all else you have to catch the ball. And while Rice did have a case of the dropsies his first couple of years, he had shown in college very good hands. Austin never has. And I seriously doubt that he ever will.

i would take Hurd over amendola for ST if nothing else. Amendola would need to show a lot on PR to beat Hurd out.

I doubt he makes the team. He's just too limited. He's probably as good as he'll ever be right now and that's just not good enough.

I'd keep Amendola over Hurd just based on potential alone.

Its technique and repetitions just like anything else. And his hands 'problem' is pretty much all being based on two passes in the Commanders game.

This may be a case of small sample size and i wager that it is.

It's funny cause they say Austin can't run routes, but was routinely opened with his man 2 steps behind him, on all plays that were thrown his way.

"Hands" is a technique like anything else that can certainly be taught.

It's much more than those two catches. In fact, I don't even remember them, and I had (and others had) formed that opinion before those catches. He's consistently looked awkward since he first arrived.

I really don't remember it being an issue in the preseason but i do remember the Commanders game. He was WIDE OPEN too.

Guy is only 23. He wont get better with more reps? Caught 19 for 314 (16.5 per )and a TD when he was like the 6th option as the 3rd WR

Really, I just hope someone steps up. It'd be nice if we could finally solve our WR issues with a "home grown" talent. Michael Irvin was the last good WR we developed.

I think Austin has the most potential...but if Hurd steps in and becomes our third/fourth WR or deep threat, then GREAT!

Odds are that none of them will make it.

It's nice to read that our WRs are looking good....of course, it is just OTAs. But still good news.

it's funny people knocking Austin because of the 2 drops, 1 of those was him looking upfield before securing the ball, the WIDE OPEN drop fuzzy is alluding to

that's a concentration issue that can be alleviated w/ more experience

know what's funny about that post? it reminds me of the Patrick Crayton/Terrence Copper debates on here, idk if you were here for those, or remember them

many wanted Copper instead because they felt that the 4.6 Crayton reached his ceiling and wasn't "athletic" enough, Copper was the athletic type who ran a 4.47, and sure enough...

I wouldn't be suprised to see Hurd return as the #4 receiver, assuming Glenn comes back, if not, he'll be #3 JMO

The difference between Crayton and Hurd is that Crayton has an uncanny ability of finding a way to get open despite his lack of athleticism.

Just don't see it from Hurd.

I think playing QB helped Crayton get it how fast he did

Hurd is entering his 3rd year, so time will tell, this is the year for both Hurd and Austin to do something

Either way, we've got Crayton. We don't need another one. We need someone that can be a deep threat and a solid #2.
