DMN Blog: Nick Folk understands why the move was made

How about criticizing Jerry for drafting a kicker who can only kickoff?

Other teams have used deep kickers as well. Given the fact that many opponets have started with a long field due to having a deep kicker has not been a bad thing for the Cowboys

Thanks for the reply, but I wasn't arguing against having a deep kicker. I was referring to drafting a guy who could only kickoff deep. I think other teams who have had deep kickers signed their deep kicker - either a veteran FA or kept a rookie FA they brought to training camp.. I really can't think of an instance where a team specifically drafted a guy just to deep kick. And most of these teams who did sign someone just to kickoff deep have still used that kicker to kick extremely long FG's or to do all the placekicking duties if their main kicker got hurt.

Dallas used a 5th round pick I'm not losing any sleep over it. For now Buehler job is as a deep kicker I don't know if that is all he will be. Just my guess but I think Buehler will do all he can to earn the FG kicking job heading into camp next year.

I haven't lost any sleep over it either. But you'd think if something happened to our starting kicker that a guy who was drafted could take over FG duties.

no. you were finding yet another reason to bag on jones. it really doesn't matter what jones does player wise, you're going to fault it. it's all you know how to do that your eyes have become so jaded.

i can to a point understand why. i'm pretty bullheaded myself. but not to the point where i make things up to fit my views vs. back up to see a broader vision.

when was the last time we had any kicker who could get a touchback? while i agree it's not optimal, it doesn't seem to be hurting us by having him here except for the roster spot. otherwise, folk would be kicking off and squishy would be doing both now w/folk gone.

so to me it just depends on how you WANT to look at it.

and we all know by now how you will see it.

You would if they felt he could do it effectively. We started the season with Folk for a reason. As I said I don't know what the future for Buehler is with this team I just know what he role on this team is this season that very well could change next season.

Especially 25 year old guys who just mad the Pro Bowl two years ago. It sucks. I wish him the best. I hope he does return because there was a point where I had confident in his leg anywhere from 55 yards and under. This season got to the point I feared him even on extra points.

The best thing for Folk to do right now is go on vacation and get away from the game for a couple of months. Go see a good sports psychologist and try to regain your focus and confidence. Then go spend some time with Coach Hoffman and start working on your mechanics which were way off by the end. If the hip is good (and the leg looked strong early in the year on some of his kicks) he should be able to turn this around.

I'd invite him to camp next year if he doesn't sign with someone else to see if he has got it all figured out.

your posts here kinda sum up how i feel about it. i hate it when a good kicker goes back but i hate it more when he almost cost us beating an undefeated team. while squishy isn't an all pro kicker, 18/21 isn't bad and he's been here before. the "bright lights" are no surprise to him.

folk does need to just get away and spend a winter in cancun or something and let his mind go for a bit and just figure out his own life.

hope he comes back around and can give a strong showing in camp next year.

Thanks for the reply, man. Seriously.

yea, i know. we both blither on about it. it just does seem you hate jones so much any move he makes you'll find fault in.

to be sure, it's there in many of his moves. but not every one.

anyway - i'll quit wasting both of our time now.

I was doing a little research. There are currently 37 Kickers on NFL rosters.

Dallas, Arizona, Carolina, New Orleans, and Indianapolis are all carrying 2 each.

Since the year 2000, 25 Kickers have been drafted. 10 of those are still in the NFL and on a roster right now. 14 of the current 37 Kickers on rosters were drafted. That means 23 of them were UDFAs.

Jason Hanson has by far the longest tenure with the team that Drafted him. He was taken in 1992 in the 2nd round. Two Kickers in the NFL have been here longer than him, John Kasay and Matt Stover. Both of them were drafted too.

I just don't think it pays to Draft Kickers. I understand why teams do it and why we did with both guys we Drafted. Up until this year I think it paid off. It still is with Buehler because the field position battle matters.

I gotta go shower. I feel dirty just doing that small bit of research on these maggots.

The Coaching staff made a mistake with Folk by not changing holders earlier.

If they knew that Folk did not like the way McBriar was holding then they knowingly contributed to his confidence issues IMO.

Not something you want to do with your kicker!

I'm sure he'll get invited back to camp to try and make the team again. I wish him well.

Any chance we can stash him on the practice squad and keep him for next year. This way he can have a whole offseason to work on his problems.

No you can't get on the practice squad once you've been active for 5 games.

Nobody is going to sign him this season. I think he'll try to come back to Dallas next season. I hope he can get it together because it would be a shame to have a career end so quickly.

Had we lost the game in NO chances are we could have put him on IR. :lmao:

That would have been on the "non-football injury" list

Folk lasted above the average Dallas kicker tenure since 1992:

Lin Elliot
Eddie Murray
Chris Boniol
Richie Cunningham
Tim Sedar
Billy Cundiff
Jose Cortez
Shuan Suisham
Mike Vanderjagt
Martin Grammatica
Nick Folk
Shuan Suisham

That's 11 kickers in 17 years.

Meaning Dallas kickers last an average of 1.5 seasons since the glory years.
Chris Boniol had the longest tenure in that span at three whole seasons plus three playoff campaigns.

In fact last Dallas kicker to win a playoff game was Boniol.

Even if the doctors are forced to remove the football from your backside? :laugh2: That sounds like a football related injury to me. :laugh2:

And the drunken kicker WAS easily replaced.

My.God.

Dude congrats, you are the biggest idiot on this entire forum. Dang. You literally have no clue about how important the kicking game is, as made obvious by your repeated attempts to prove yourself right, then hilariously being proven wrong by your own post.

Way cool! :lmao2:

He handled it well, and I respect that. Even as I hate him.

That last paragraph is pure truth. They wanted him to straighten himself out but time is of the essence.

He had to handle it well after he threw McBrair under the bus.

I will never get that image of Romo standing up, wiping his hands on his jersey and walking right past Folk after that miss. You can say body language doesn't mean anything, but that was screaming "I'm done with you dude."

That being said. I iwsh him the best.

Class individual.

Yeah, from this article you would think so, but this is the same guy that was trying to blame the holder just a couple weeks ago. I would feel bad for him if not for that.
