Todd Archer/Reporter http://www.***BANNED-URL***/blogs/images/bio-icon.jpg Bio | http://www.***BANNED-URL***/blogs/images/email-icon.jpg E-mail | http://www.***BANNED-URL***/blogs/images/email-icon.jpg News tips Out since the Green Bay game with a fractured fibula and torn ligaments in his left ankle, Marc Colombo will do some on-field work today for the first time since the surgery.
Colombo said "everything is looking good," for a possible return this season and his eyes are set on a possible wild-card round playoff game. Initially it was believed Colombo would only be able to return for the divisional round.
Colombo said the pain would not be an issue but strength would be. He has done mostly upper-body work since the surgery and is looking forward to his rehab sessions with associate athletic trainer Britt Brown.
Doug Free has fared well in Colombo's absence at right tackle over the last five games.

This is interesting, folks. Free has played pretty dang well in Colombo's absence. I still think we'll insert Colombo back in the starting lineup and re-evaluate the situation in the offseason. What do you guys think we should do with Colombo/Free?

Don't rush him. If he's not 100%, don't bother. Free's done pretty well.

That said, if he's ready, you gotta go with him.

maybe he can replace the other side and avoid 20-50 yards of penalties a game in crucial situations.

Columbo false starts almost as much as Flo. A couple of seasons ago he had more.

wow......this is a nice piece of news today. Free has been serviceable but not as good as some people have said IMO. I know in some cases they've had to keep a back and/or tight end in to help in passing downs: if Mark is healthy enough you have to go with him. He's the better player, period.

I thought we had to make the divisonal round before we saw him again. Free is obviously a competent replacement, so no need to rush.

This is easy. Put Free in at left tackle.

Flozell is strong, that's why he remains on the team, but his kryptonite is speed rushers (i.e. Dwight Feeney, DeMarcus Ware). If Flozell gets his hands on people he could use his power, that's why I believe Flozell should move to Left Guard and Columbo move to Right Tackle while Free stay at left.

that's a damn good line of thinking RealCowboyfan: for next season. Can't mess with the chemistry of all that this season IMO.

Columbo is already at RT and Free isn't strong or quick enough for LT and Flo can't pull so he couldn't be a G.

I thought Free's book was good footwork, limited strength.

I disagree I think Free's game is much better suited for LT and I think he has plenty of quicks.

He is a heck of a backup but probably a solid at best starter in this league.

It would be in our best interest to draft a guy but Free can play that position.

He's been quick enough so far at RT but he needs to be much quicker for LT. Flo might not be the quickiest LT but right now he's better than Free.

If we were to shuffle the oline in the offseason I could possibly see Columbo moving back to LT. I'd rather draft a LT first.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Definetely our best option.

This just so happens to be a deep year of OLinemen.

It wouldn't hurt if the kid from Ball State developed into a player for us.

They have him as a tackle but I just think he'll end up being a Left Guard for us.

I mean left tackle and free stay at right.

I think you can already see that he has really good athleticism.

But the obvious thing he is missing is strength but he really hasn't gotten man handled and the Left End is usually the guy who is going to bring the better bull rush.

I have no doubt the guy can be a solid pass blocker. He just lacks in run blocking. Hes not even a terrible run blocker because he gets his body in position but he just gets no push on his man.
