Emmitt Smith raised a few eyebrows in September when he wondered aloud who were the Cowboys' emotional leaders. Smith's point was that when things were down, either he, Troy Aikman or Michael Irvin would be on the sideline chewing guys out or pumping them up. This team, for whatever reason, doesn't have that guy(s).
"We have guys who know when to stand up, when to say what," quarterback Tony Romo said. "I think the biggest misconception is that you need a rah-rah guy who's going to get in people's face. It's time now to take your play up a notch. No one here is 18-years old anymore. You don't get to this point and play at this level unless you're a guy who is competitive."
I got into it with Calvin and Tim at lunch about this very topic. Whether Romo likes it or not, the quarterback is the one people look to for leadership. He doesn't have to stalk the sideline ripping guys after missed assignments. But you'd like to think the quarterback will stand up in team meetings, the locker room, wherever and let his thoughts be known.
Calvin and Tim's point was that you never saw Joe Montana, Brett Favre or Peyton Manning doing what we saw Aikman do over the years. Does that mean they were wrong and Aikman was right? Different strokes for different folks, to be sure. If it's not in Romo's nature, then so be it. Still, this team needs something from somebody, it seems.
If the quarterback isn't providing emotional leadership when things go haywire, then who is?

I looked up at lunch and read on ESPN's Bottom Line that Terence Newman had been ruled out of Sunday's game because of his abdominal strain.
That isn't the case, we're told. No determination has been made yet on Newman's status for the game against the Cardinals.
Newman could miss his third game of the season, but we won't know whether that'll be the case until later this week.
