Tony Romo's not the rah-rah type

Emmitt Smith raised a few eyebrows in September when he wondered aloud who were the Cowboys' emotional leaders. Smith's point was that when things were down, either he, Troy Aikman or Michael Irvin would be on the sideline chewing guys out or pumping them up. This team, for whatever reason, doesn't have that guy(s).

"We have guys who know when to stand up, when to say what," quarterback Tony Romo said. "I think the biggest misconception is that you need a rah-rah guy who's going to get in people's face. It's time now to take your play up a notch. No one here is 18-years old anymore. You don't get to this point and play at this level unless you're a guy who is competitive."

I got into it with Calvin and Tim at lunch about this very topic. Whether Romo likes it or not, the quarterback is the one people look to for leadership. He doesn't have to stalk the sideline ripping guys after missed assignments. But you'd like to think the quarterback will stand up in team meetings, the locker room, wherever and let his thoughts be known.

Calvin and Tim's point was that you never saw Joe Montana, Brett Favre or Peyton Manning doing what we saw Aikman do over the years. Does that mean they were wrong and Aikman was right? Different strokes for different folks, to be sure. If it's not in Romo's nature, then so be it. Still, this team needs something from somebody, it seems.

If the quarterback isn't providing emotional leadership when things go haywire, then who is?

Terence Newman has not been ruled out

I looked up at lunch and read on ESPN's Bottom Line that Terence Newman had been ruled out of Sunday's game because of his abdominal strain.

That isn't the case, we're told. No determination has been made yet on Newman's status for the game against the Cardinals.

Newman could miss his third game of the season, but we won't know whether that'll be the case until later this week.

PLEASE sit Newman, for at least the next 2-3 weeks. He's our second best D player...we can NOT afford to lose him for a long stretch.

Romo says team doesn't need in-your-face leaders

Much has been made this week in the media and with fans about leadership on the Cowboys. Because when things aren't going well, who will get this team going as a leaders? Some think they don't have any get-in-your-face guys in the locker or sidelines. They really don't. That's just not the style of some of the leaders on this team.

Tony Romo says the rah-rah, get-in-your-face stuff is for high school players, not pros. As far as leaders on this team, Romo thinks this is the best collection since he arrived.

"This is probably the best I have seen the leadership that surrounds the team. Because we have guys who know when to stand up and when to say what. I think the biggest misconception is that you need a rah-rah guy who is going to get in someone's face.

"You need someone to say it's time to execute and it time now to take your play up a notch. The guys who get in people face...no one here is 18 years old anymore. Guys take it personal when they don't play well."

You don't have to be Rah rah Tony. However, sitting by your self with your helmet on isn't helping either. So try something different. He seems to want to emulate Brady lately....well try being like Brady in this regard. Demand more of your team Tony.

And by 'when things go haywire' Brian means 'when you're only beating a team by as few as two scores.' Makes sense to me.

:laugh2: I used to love how Aikman would tear into his 300+ lb o-linemen on the field and on the sidelines. He used to eat Erik Williams' lunch every week. I also remember him giving Tuinei an earful now and then.

While I agree that players should not have to be motivated by other players, each player isn't wired the same. Some players need zero encouragement or urging to play at their best 24/7. Other players do.

The quarterback isn't bound by tradition to be 'that guy'. In fact, it doesn't even have to be a player. It could be a coach, but someone on the team should be counted on to push those certain players who require an extra nudge or two during a game.

I recall NFLN runnin a piece on Brady where he is yelling at his team "ARE WE GOING TO FIGHT OR LAY DOWN" I guess Tony doesn't have NFLN. Aikman only yelled at players when Jimmy left. Aikman assumed that role when the head coach would not as he should on a football team even the one over 18! The fact is Tony Romo looks very satisfied with his life and if the Cowboys play poorly there is not much he is willin to do to change it! Does he really think noone over 18 needs to be told get your head out of your bhind b4 we lose this game! If he does my dreams of a Cowboys super bowl in the near future are over!

You dont have to be a rah-rah Tony, but looking like you're about to cry on the sidelines every time you screw up on the field and saying a team that is obviously softer than Charmin doesnt need someone is their face is b.s.
