SAN DIEGO — Darrion Weems has never played in an NFL regular season game. The last time he saw any action outside of practice was Aug. 29, 2013, when he appeared in the preseason finale against Houston.

But despite Weems’ inexperience at the pro level, he is the frontrunner to become the Cowboys’ swing tackle, the most important reserve role on the offensive line.

On Thursday, he started in Tyron Smith’s place on the left side and looked shaky at times. In one instance, Chargers linebacker Kyle Emanuel ran around him and sacked Dustin Vaughan in the second quarter. Late in the second half, Weems was flagged for holding.

Asked about his performance, Weems said, “It was all right.”

“That was the first time I played in a competitive situation like that in almost two years,” he added, “so there was some rust I had to knock off and I felt all right the first time out. Every day is an opportunity. Just think about going out and being the best you can be.”

Lucky Whitehead: I have to forget about the fumble; 'I think I'll be fine'
  • Cowboys injuries: TE James Hanna could miss a week or two; WR Dez Bryant may not be ready to return to practice
  • Bob Sturm: What impressed me, what I want to see more of after Cowboys' first preseason game

Without tape hard to tell why he looked bad. Probably lack of game time and hasn't even practiced for awhile. I hope thats the majority of it. It is a concern and a big one.

He may not be the second coming of Anthony Munoz, but he definitely is not the worst swing tackle to put on a Cowboys uni. He has potential.

I think I am more concerned with swing tackle position than the RB position.

@xwalker has said he feels the same way.

Weems sure didn't look "all right" to me. If he thinks that performance is acceptable, he's going to be looking for work. Not only was he getting beaten, he was getting beaten to the inside. Hopefully, he looks better on the right side.

I don't know what this organization sees in Weems, he's terrible!!........The only Potential Weems has is if he's forced into a game because of an injury to one of our starting tackles, Tony Romo literally could be killed...Weems is stealing money from this organization..

Well he got beat inside on 1 play. Rule #1 for an OL in pass protection is don't get beat inside. You just can't do that.

Backup tackle looks bad and if Lael Collins can't do it then i'd start thinking about getting Zack Martin ready if we have to go a stretch without Smith or Free.

If he continues down that river in Egypt, there's no football in that place.

I was reading Strum's "What impressed me, what I want to see more of after Cowboys’ first preseason game" Q&A, and this caught my attention:

Over on the bad side of the ledger I suppose you can see that the Cowboys offensive line, it’s deep and it’s talented, but when Doug Free and Tyron Smith and Chaz Green all don’t play tackle, the guys they do have playing are just not up to grade.

How can he say this about Green when the guy hasn't played tackle in the NFL yet?

He obviously needs more game reps, a lot more. The good thing is he should play almost all of the preseason snaps.

I would still prefer a better option to compete with him than Wetzel or Dill. One of Collins or Martin should take some snaps at OT just in case.

Weems scares me
Maybe it's just rust but that was a very bad performance and the fact he thinks he did ok scares me even more
He will get lots of reps in the next game but if he plays the next game like this game we have to look at other options

The coaches have said he is strong enough. I've seen his feet and they're decent. I didn't watch him well last night as I was busy with the mod thing but when I noticed or saw a replay of a bad result it was hands and balance. Didn't see his punch.

My guess is progresses well enough but there is genuine cause for concern. It's just too early to jump to permanent conclusions.
