SAN DIEGO — Darrion Weems has never played in an NFL regular season game. The last time he saw any action outside of practice was Aug. 29, 2013, when he appeared in the preseason finale against Houston.
But despite Weems’ inexperience at the pro level, he is the frontrunner to become the Cowboys’ swing tackle, the most important reserve role on the offensive line.
On Thursday, he started in Tyron Smith’s place on the left side and looked shaky at times. In one instance, Chargers linebacker Kyle Emanuel ran around him and sacked Dustin Vaughan in the second quarter. Late in the second half, Weems was flagged for holding.
Asked about his performance, Weems said, “It was all right.”
“That was the first time I played in a competitive situation like that in almost two years,” he added, “so there was some rust I had to knock off and I felt all right the first time out. Every day is an opportunity. Just think about going out and being the best you can be.”
