The Cowboys declined to pick a running back in the recent NFL draft, electing to enter 2015 with the current stable of backs to replace the departed DeMarco Murray.
While the team appears comfortable with the likes of Darren McFadden, Joseph Randle, Lance Dunbar and Ryan Williams, Cowboys VP Stephen Jones said it won’t necessarily stay that way.
So who might the Cowboys bring in to supply reinforcements? One veteran back is already lobbying his services.
Former 2,000-yard rusher Chris Johnson would like the opportunity to play for the Cowboys and run behind one of the NFL’s top offensive lines.
Johnson was recently stopped outside a Los Angeles restaurant by TMZ and was asked about the possibility of playing for the Cowboys next season.
“I’d fit good in Dallas,” Johnson said when asked if the Cowboys were a good option. “They need it. Yeah. That’s what we’re trying to do.”
Before getting into his ride, Johnson looked in the camera with a message for the team.
“Cowboys, come holler at me,” Johnson said.
Johnson was accompanied by former Titans teammate and Texas Longhorns quarterback Vince Young. The national champion QB was asked if Johnson would be a good fit with the defending NFC East champs.
“He’ll fit well,” Young said. “They gonna love CJ out there.”
Johnson spent last season with the New York Jets after six years with Tennessee. He was a 1,000-yard rusher in each of his six seasons with the Titans, including a 2,006-yard year in 2009, but ran for just 663 yards on only 155 carries in New York.
The East Carolina product signed a two-year deal with the Jets ahead of last season, but the team declined to pick up his option for 2015 in February.
It’s been a busy offseason for Johnson away from football as well. In March,
Johnson was shot in the shoulder in a drive-by shooting in which the driver of the car Johnson was riding in was killed.
In January, Johnson was arrested on a misdemeanor gun charge in his hometown of Orlando. According to reports, Johnson was charged with open carrying of weapons/firearms, a second-degree misdemeanor, after a police search of his car during a routine traffic stop.
The charge was dropped in March.
Would Johnson, or any other running back, be worth adding to the roster at this point?
Perhaps not yet, but Stephen Jones told SportsDay’s Jon Machota that they weren’t closing the door on adding a veteran to the mix, mentioning on two occasions how the Patriots acquired LeGarrette Blount late in the season last year.
“Short of it being a unique situation,” Stephen Jones said, “then we’re comfortable where we are.”
Meanwhile, Jerry Jones told Machota that the Cowboys didn’t feel the need to add one in the draft thanks to the addition of McFadden.
“We didn’t know that McFadden was going to be available when we initially started to think about this year and in our decisions regarding that,” Jerry Jones said. “It might have been a little different story had we not had McFadden on our roster in this draft.”
Interestingly enough, McFadden has been in the league the same length as Johnson, but has played in 28 fewer games and run for 1,000 yards on only one occasion. Johnson’s reached that mark in all but one season. McFadden also has just 25 career touchdowns compared to Johnson’s 51.
Maybe the Cowboys should, as he puts it, come holler at Johnson.
