How involved is he? Every NFL city is represented by one voter on the selection committee, and Goose is it. Asked the question in a public forum, he had a chance to be proactive. He could have said something about Witten's accomplishments, which are many, both on and off the field. He could have said, "Witten will make it in, if I have anything to do with it...I will make sure his case gets heard." Something positive from the Dallas representative. Instead, Goose just reveals how little it means to him, by showing how little he's considered Witten's case.

You answered your own question.

Second, it doesn't matter what Goose thinks singularly because a single vote can't get a player into the Hall of Fame. It takes a majority vote to get a player in. Goose is just telling you what others think and what the pattern has been.

Third, the question was asked whether Witten was a "sure thing" for the Hall of Fame not Goose, how would you pitch Witten for the Hall? So Goose answers the question in a non-homeristic Cowboy way. He tells of the difficulty in tight ends being inducted into the Hall. And he's saying this based on his knowledge and experience of men/women who vote for Hall of Fame candidates.

"It would behoove him to win a Super Bowl?" There are 8 TE in the HOF, and half of them never won a Super Bowl. Two of those, Ozzie Newsome and Jackie Smith, combined have fewer 1st team All -Pro selections, and fewer Pro Bowls than Witten.

And Ozzie Newsome and Jackie Smith played in what eras??? When they played, the Super Bowl wasn't nearly as big as it is now. Moreover, Newsome and Smith played for franchises that were perennial losers. Often, they were the best players on their teams and with their franchises. Furthermore, the HoF, obviously, had fewer players back when they played than it does now. And, as always, there are a considerable amount of players who don't make it on their first go-round - look at Cris Carter and Michael Irvin.

Look, I believe Witten belongs into the HoF. But whether people like it or not, Cowboys are judged by a different standard based on the standard they set (which is the reason Romo won't get in without a Super Bowl ring, IMO), the league is different than it was 30 years ago when other tight ends played and even a Hall of Fame worthy candidate may have to wait to get in because of so many others who are trying to get in.

It's not sacrilegious that Goose thinks Witten may have to get a ring to get the respect he deserves. He gave you the reason why in his comment.
