DMN: Jason Garrett explains why Cowboys’ Tony Romo will play vs. Washington

Valid good points on both sides of this argument.
Garrett coached this team to the 2 big December wins over the Eagles and Colts.
I think i will trust his judgement to make the right drcision on this.

What kind of odds you want on the GB-Det game ending in a tie?? I'll take that bet every single time. That's the only way winning means anything. The #2 can be had whether we win or lose, which is why winning and hoping for that tie between GB-Det (who are both playing for something) is as close to moot as you can get.

I can give you the odds. 16 games a week, 16 weeks of games, and a tie happens about once every 5 years. So once in every 1,280 games.

You don't think you can get hurt in a light practice. You've never played sports before?

In a practice you're playing against your teammates who all have the same goal as you and wouldn't dare lay a finger on Romo. Against the Commanders you're playing against division rivals who wouldn't want anything more than to ruin the playoff chances of their rival.

There is no such thing. It's a regular season game, you play until the game is in hand. Period, no questions asked. Does it backfire sometimes, YES. Tornado's hit just one house sometimes. What are the odds of that? Crap happens. But this is a regular season game, and a slight possibility to get the #1 seed.
And if you don't mind, I'll say whatever I want to say. I disagree with your opinion and you disagree with mine. But if you think you can avoid injuries, then you're naive. Either way, he's playing so you're wasting your breath.

No questions asked. So if you have the #1 seed sewn up in the last week, you STILL play all your starters full and risk injury, is that correct? I don't agree at all. Nothing is black and white, and in this case to me the risk FAR outweighs the gain in momentum and seeding. Every regular season game is NOT the same. Some have more importance, some have none.

Commanders brought more blitzers than we had blockers. That was the problem more than the A gap specifically. It was on romo and the receivers and their communications.

Not really. They were shifting their interior DT right before the snap, and then rushing the gap that he had just shifted into. And we were blowing the pickups. One the RG missed. One of them Murray blew. I don't remember off the top of my head where the other mistakes were, but I believe they mostly had to do with not handing players off to Free and shifting inside quickly enough.

And then, of course, we had a bunch of drops that game that would ordinarily have been conversions for us that kept the chains moving, or led to points which would have slowed down the blitzing some. Dez dropped a TD. Williams didn't make a tough catch over the middle. Witten even had a drop in OT that stalled a drive, IIRC. Bad execution that week, all around.

Which is not to say that same thing might not happen again. They beat us up, fair and square. But it wasn't like they were overloading us and Tony just couldn't get the ball out. They were well-designed blitzes based on a tendency they exposed that we had to then adjust to in subsequent weeks. But it wasn't the case they they just overloaded us.

Ok fine, but what happens if we go out win the Commanders game and then miraculously get that first round bye. Then wouldn't that be 2 weeks of rest? Are they somehow going to find a team to play a pickup game with to keep from getting rusty?

My point was merely that this team doesn't necessaily play better with more rest. Personally, I'm torn on whether they should play him or sit him. I see the value either way. My personal feeling is that he's an NFL player, getting paid a whole lot of money, and if he's able to go, he should play. But at the same time, I'll likely be holding ,my breath during the game, so I wouldn't have a problem if they sat him.

I am as well if you are talking about playing to keep momentum. I understand that. I don't get the you play for the bye (as remote as that would be) or you play so there's no rust. Teams get byes throughout the year, teams get them in playoffs. Just have to weigh the risk in each situation.

We've had trouble with protecting the A gap esp with stacked blitzes as well as stunts. We've failed to make the right presnap reads at times. I wouldn't bet my life but I think Tony doesn't move his guys around properly at times. Generally though it's just poor execution. Why it happens with the Commanders has to be in some part due to the Skins.

We don't need to Win to gain that #2 seed. Was pointed out to me, so long as the Rams defeat the Seahawks & the 49ers defeat the Cardinals, we'd earn the #2 seed, regardless if we Win or Lose our game.

That may be but I thought we had to win our game to get the 2. I'll try and look at it more carefully.

It's only the rest of a a few players that matter. Romo, Dez (this is more protection than rest), Martin, McClain, and maybe Murray. Guys who are banged up and could use any time off to get closer to 100% and not put more stress on their already stressed bodies. Even if they choose to sit guys, there is still a game, and many starters would still play some. It's smart to let guys who could use some time to heal some to do so, and not risk losing someone who is essential (Dez). Of course, I'd also love to see Lawrence get to play just about every defensive snap, and hopefully Brent can get some work in too.

I see what you're saying, and I really don't have a problem with them resting some guys. I just think people are creatures of habit, and it's good to keep them on the same path, physically and mentally. But if certain players, and therefore the team, would benefit from them resting, fine.

Can't change his decision. So let's rationalize.

Given lack of padded practice allowed now treat this as game speed practice for this team preparing for the playoffs. See if we can pick up full blitzes the way we should and grind this game out. Want to see our OL just take the WILL out of opponent DL.
Anyone injured gets to sit out such as Ro McClain and Free. Let D Law start and play majority of the snaps as game experience.

While I always want the Cowboys to destroy the Commanders.. And, it kills a little inside me every time Dallas does lose to that POS team..

Murray, Dez, Romo, Witten need to sit.

I still don't believe Romo and Dez are out there near the end of the game. Just don't think it will happen...

our OL has got better at picking up stunts,we were just terrible in the first game.

2 or 3 times it was because they overloaded us. Gruden even said it. Commanders safety Meriwether had 2 sacks where he came unblocked because they brought more rushers than we had blockers.

1. You're not gonna keep Romo out of a game, if he's active. He'll do everything in his power including looking for his "helmet the coaches had to hide to keep him on the sidelines" <True story.

2. I agree with Garrett's mentality and it's what's brought this team this far.

3. The entire offense knows that Washington will be selling out to blitz and what better way to prove to yourself you're ready for the playoffs than to stonewall every down blitzes.

I like it. I also like that it will show this team we can protect Romo from anything.
