DMN: Jason Garrett explains why Cowboys’ Tony Romo will play vs. Washington

This is a football team that has never really done much of anything. Personally, I agree with Garrett that there are no meaningless games. I think that's the right message for a young team. If Romo gets hurt, that's football.

so continue to piss and moan, peace out.
Who was that meant for? Never pissed & moaned about anything. Just pointed out that playing wouldn't really improve our seeding. Piss out. :)

That may be but I thought we had to win our game to get the 2. I'll try and look at it more carefully.

To get the #1 seed, We need to beat the Skins, 9ers beat the Cards, Rams beat the Seahawks & Lions/Packers end in a Tie.

To get the #2 seed, we need the 9ers to beat the Cards & the Rams to beat the Seahawks. We earn the #2 seed win or lose.

Anything other than those scenarios, we stay at the #3 seed & Host the lowest seeded NFC Wildcard team Next Weekend.

There ya go. :)

2 or 3 times it was because they overloaded us. Gruden even said it. Commanders safety Meriwether had 2 sacks where he came unblocked because they brought more rushers than we had blockers.

Neither of the Meriweather sacks were. The first was a blown pickup, where the flipped the three tech but dropped the LB into coverage and blitzed the DB. The second was the obvious blown pickup by Murray late in the game.

We had people to handle each of those. Just didn't get it done.

I fully support Garrett on whatever decision he actually makes.

But, I have no problem with going for the win.

Back in 2007 the Giants had nothing to gain by playing the Patriots in week 17. They went out and played them tough and lost. Meanwhile, we took it easy in a game we had nothing to win. And the Giants ended up going to the Super Bowl while we looked out of sorts. After the Giants lost to the Pats in that game, John Madden left a message with Tom Coughlin and thanked him for playing the game the right way.

That's what these guys are paid to do...win games. And I can't fault a team that wants to win.

We never know, Romo or Murray or Dez could get hurt walking down the street or in the first play of the first playoff game. Meanwhile, we do have a chance of getting a bye.

I also think about if this was the Patriots, they would play to win and somehow get the bye. And people would say 'they got lucky!', but they were prepared to put themselves in a position to get lucky.

It's not an enviable position for Garrett. If we STL beats SEA and we tank the Skins game, he'll get killed for it. If we tank the Skins game and then lose in the playoffs, people will say that they should have played the players because the rest stalled the momentum they had. So, I stick by that either way. After this season when almost nobody picked them to win even 9 games...I think he's earned our support.

Wait so you think a half of football over 2 weeks is the difference between rust and staying sharp?

It's actually not about rust, I would sit them because of the risk of injury, what I meant is that since it's clear that won't happen, then I assume they play some, maybe a half and get ready for the playoff game. They weren't rusty coming of their bye @giants and their mini byes @Bears and @Eagles, in fact, quite the contrary, you think they where or why are you talking about rust?

I trust Garrett either way.

Anyway, to your original point, like I stated, the Pats know that if they rest their starters they would have 2 weeks off, that's a huge difference.

Edit: @bears wasn't a mini bye, but you get my point.

To save this team, can't we just make Garrett inactive for this meaningless game? Just give him and his wife some tickets to Cabo or something. Listen, Jason, since you are doing so well ever since we stripped you of almost all duties except throwing the red flag (when told by Wade Wilson and others) on game day, we want to reward you with a week (several weeks in my opinion) off. Don't worry. I'm sure Marinelli and Linehan can hold the fort down.

Wait, so Garrett just throws an occassional challenge flag and stands there clapping while the coordinators
You all are really tripping if you think JG will play them the whole game.

Given what I saw of Garrett in the Jacksonville and Indianapolis games, I would take this bet in a heartbeat. I'll bet they play the whole game barring a blowout.

Romo has a bad back coach. This is your bye. Don't be foolish. If tony goes down so does our season and you will be torched. Hand him the clipboard and let weeden play. It's the smart thing to do

I mean i get you want to go into the postseason with all engines running, but we've seen how effective a hobbled Romo is this season (not very). You have to think that Haslett is once again going to unleashing the hounds. I would take my chances with a little rust for a much more healthier Romo (and Murray for that matter) in the opening round.

Barring a super bowl appearance, there is no way I want Garrett back as coach. I am tired of his decision-making process which defies logic.

You won't like his replacement any better.

More than likely the team just wants payback for the loss earlier in the year. It isn't worth it.

1. You're not gonna keep Romo out of a game, if he's active. He'll do everything in his power including looking for his "helmet the coaches had to hide to keep him on the sidelines" <True story.

2. I agree with Garrett's mentality and it's what's brought this team this far.

3. The entire offense knows that Washington will be selling out to blitz and what better way to prove to yourself you're ready for the playoffs than to stonewall every down blitzes.

I like it. I also like that it will show this team we can protect Romo from anything.

And that's exactly what they will do. A win does nothing for them but knocking Romo out of the game does. The OL better be ready.

Garrett's in a no-win situation. If he sits the starters, and things "fall right" regarding Seattle, Arizona, Detroit and/or Green Bay, he'll be crucified by all the "experts" on this site.

The only way that happens is if GB and Detroit tie. Dallas is the #2 seed if Seattle and Arizona lose no matter if Dallas wins or loses.

Washington is going to send more than we can block and the issue is that extra rush is not going to let up even if Tony lets go of the ball 15 yard penalty be damned since who cares the game is meaningless.

and in doing so you show what confidence in your OL and scheme that you cant protect him against a 4 win team?
what if weeden plays and throws a pass cross the middle behind dez and in trying to catch it he gets nailed by a s and seperate his shoulder?
you play to win the game with your best players

i never said to play dez lol.

but tony has chronic injuries...his chance for injury and chance that its a more problematic injury is higher than anyone else on the team. and yes, the OL and scheme that couldnt protect him last game, I dont have much faith in for this game either.

Hopefully we will be three scores up in 2nd quarter , JG a will sit Tony and Murray...

We get in if SEA and ARI lose regardless of the outcome of our game. The only way we can get a first seed is if GB and DET tie. That is why the game is entirely meaningless and should be a week to rest players that are hurt and managing injuries like Romo, Murray, Martin. Free etc.

We didn't lose in 2007 because of Cabo. The Cowboys won the 1st half of that game which is where you would assume rust and loss of momentum would affect a team. The Cowboys gave up a cheap quick touchdown to end the half and the Giants rode the momentum made adjustments and the Cowboys didn't match them in the 2nd half.
