Darren Woodson: Jason Garrett needs full control; ‘his thumb print is not on this organization’

Former Dallas Cowboys All-Pro safety Darren Woodson turns 45 today. The five-time Pro Bowler hasn’t lined up in Dallas’ defensive backfield since 2003.

And the team has struggled to replace him ever since.

During a recent interview, Woodson, an ESPN NFL analyst, explained that the Cowboys have had difficulty replacing him because they haven’t had the “emphasis on the position.”

“When you need to fill a position, until you absolutely focus on that position and that need, then you’re not going to do it,” Woodson told TheLandryHat.com’s Dan Krupinsky. “Until they get in that mindset that ‘We need to go get a safety’ and isolate two or three guys in the first round, they’re just not going to find that guy that they want.”

Cannot disagree with Woody here, especially on his take on our lack of emphasis on solid Safeties.

Yet we still have a general false assumption (many fans/posters) that the position will take care of itself with the assistance of a pass rush. You need players with some talent. Wilcox is the only "talent" worth grooming @ the moment. The recent seasons prior to 2013 (where the pass rush was more than adequate) still resulted in long completions and confusion in the secondary. We are forgetting this way too often with the recent draft talk and disregarding S as an adequate 1st round selection. I will admit that edge rushers take priority, but if they are gone, Pryor would be a great selection for this team.

If Woody is correct and Garrett can't take the reigns of this organization, I would say he has left a thumbprint. And that thumbprint is weakness. Garrett's tenure here has been marked by an abnormal number of mitigating circumstances, namely injuries, which have done one of two things:

1) Cost the team games

or,

2) Saved his job year after year.

Whichever one you pick depends on how you look at it.

I agree with Woody here, for the most part. There is an issue of control in Jerry's locker room.

Interesting take on Church, too. Wonder why he declined to say any more.

if its true that garrett cant have full control, than i will give him that, but theres a few weaknesses that lie on his shoulders, but if its true he doesnt have that kind of control and we as Cowboys fans have to just live with what we have til the day JJ is gone, because he has proven he wont change regardless of evidence or pride. Hes here til they wheel them out and if that means Dallas has to suffer, Dallas will suffer.

Pretty sure Church and Wilcox were no shows for the voluntary workouts that started.

Saftey is a concern, but I like the top DEs and DTs in the 1st a lot more than Pryor or Dix. If we had the space, Byrd would have been great. Hopefully we can either hit on a late round this year, one of our guys steps up, or there is someone in the top rounds next year worth the pick.

I agree with Darren about the safeties, but unfortunately, I see Garrett's thumb print all over this team, and it a huge part of the problem.

I kind of view it a little more nuanced... I think we can see the fingerprints of Garrett with this team. The things I think of when I hear Jason Garrett as a head coach are clock/late game management issues, general lack of commitment to running the ball, and (on the positive side) the team seems to have changed as far as bringing in players who aren't circus acts. I think those things and others can be attributed to Garrett.

But maybe the absence of his "thumbprint" like Woodson is talking about is that he doesn't have his thumb on the team... more as a reference to a lack of control due to Jerry's level of involvement.

The player I like the most is Jimmie Ward in the second. Otherwise I would pass on most of the guys.

I found the Church comment intriguing as well. But, is that more Woody trying to get a safety in charge and possibly light a fire under Church a little? I would think that a safety SHOULD be the leader with the DB's, but maybe he is being passively-aggressive in trying to get church to reel it all in...also, someone else posted that church didn't show up for the voluntary work outs? If true, then woody needs to speak more clearly with the DBs :D

There is no way that Jerruh will ever give the kind of control he did to JJ; and just about as unlikely will he give the kind of control he gave to BP. What Red Ball has NOW is all he is ever going to get. And by the way there certainly is his fingerprints on this team; and we are an 8-8 franchise. So would more do any real good?
