I like Miles Austin but I'd take the pick. Austin has potential but he is unproven and has had some injury concerns.

Again, if Austin is here I will root for him like crazy but I just don't think he's sure thing and/or worth a 2nd round pick.

2nd round pick for a unproven, undrafted free agent? give it to me! i would allow this to happen if we picked up someone like a t. holt and used that second on a solid receiver. either way i would be happy to have austin or the 2nd round pick.

I feel like bumping the threads back when it was rumored that the Jets were offering us a 4th for Romo and the majority of the forum was backing that move.

Austing is a homegrown player, and honestly it's players like Miles Austin that build championship teams. (Note: I'm not saying Austin is the key to a championship) I would hate to lose him. He's poised to at least be a decent player in the NFL, and I would say he at least has the potential for more. Now with that second rounder, we could get a Greg Jennings, or we could get garbage. But with Austin, we've got a guy who has shown a bit, knows our system, has played his career here, and has potential to be better than he's shown already. Romo raved about him last offseason, wanted everyone to watch out for him.

It's not the end of the world if we lose him, but man I would hate it.

Dont be scared homer, you know you are saying miles austin = championship.

unless you think that 1 game in 07 was a career indicator.

:laugh2:

lol

I bet if you compared romos numbers to bledsoe it would have been the right move!!!!!

and I bet those same people would trade romo to the jets now for a 7!

Securing Holt would definitely soften the blow a little but I would still be pissed. I'm tired of developing players that move on to compete on other squads... We're becoming the NFL's farm system.

I wouldn't want another Jimmy Smith scenario happening

This has Jimmy Smith written all over it.

Meh. We've released tons of receivers over the years who didn't turn into the next "Jimmy Smith." I bet the Jets don't think he has that potential, either.

Agreed! Not a bad haul for a WR w/ less than 20 CAREER receptions!

Not bad if that is all he ever is.

Yikes, just saw this thread but I didn't read all 23 pages... excuse me if this has already been covered.

First of all, if we're confident that we can secure Brian Robiskie with either #51 or #52, then I wouldn't be too upset if Austin got away. Robiskie is the only receiver who can realistically fall to those picks that I like.

Secondly, can someone please explain the poison pill concept? Thanks.

It means the new team puts in a clause that is impossible for the old team to match. Some examples would be:

If Austin plays against 3 NFC East teams then a $ 9 million dollar bonus is triggered.

If Austin plays 7 or more games in state of Texas then he can void all remaining contract years and become an Unrestricted Free Agent.

Austin must be highest-paid WR on team after this season or else full contract is guaranteed.

Jerry is a salesman. He puts the 2nd round tender on Austin then plays up how much we will depend on him in 2009. He says that is part of reason why they released Owens. He put the bait out there and the Jets are nibbling. If he put a first round tender on him, no nibbles.

Yeah but what's the point for nibbles for pick #51? I don't think it's worth it unless he already has a plan to package #51 and #52 for a 1st rounder, and then somehow get Nicks or someone else that would produce immediate results.

STILL say we should have went after Houshmandzadeh, even Boldin. Especially for what we gave up for Roy Williams. Could have gotten Boldin for similar numbers and Housh for much much less, hell basically for free if we brought him in after the season as a UFA.

But, I'm not a professional at this stuff...does anyone else side with me at all? Or am I just crazy?

Oh, gotcha, thanks. You'd figure there would be some rules against this.

of course it is, since Austin got hurt. BUt it doesn't take away the fact that he was having a very good preseason and making strides.

Given that he had Owens and Roy Williams in front of him, I won't hold that against him.

He's not the same player he was in 2007. He's a much better receiver.

Again, how much did he play after Roy Williams came to town?

Crayton didn't get a lot of playing time down the stretch either.

I don't hold it against Austin that he didn't beat out Owens or Williams.

Stash it all boils down to this... has Austin ever beaten out Crayton?

The RW and T.O. argument is meaningless because he hasn't beaten out much lesser players. Hurd has started just as many games... in fact so has Stanback and both are just great players.. I mean I have no proof but my say so it just as strong and the nonsense suggesting Austin is.
