DMN: Scouting the Giants: New York's new-look defense to debut against Cowboys after near

The Cowboys ranked 17th in defense but tied a league-record low with their 11 takeaways and also finished 25th in sacks. The Commanders finished 28th in defense, the Eagles 30th and the Giants 32nd.

And the Cowboy fans think they're about to witness the worst defense the world has ever seen! Cowboys 17th without any offense after game 6? But they had Hardy! Who was an overrated bum! You improved greatly by dumping that jerk. And what's with the on;y 11 turnovers qualifier? 17th is 17th. We were horrible on D in 2013, but still managed 28 TO. Give me the team that was great vs the pass last season, and tighten up the run D and let's make this SB run!

Hardy was our second best defensive player last year. Better than Lawrence, better than Crawford, better than Byron. He was the guy eating the double teams that allowed Lawrence to work one-on-one. He'll be a big loss on the field. Don't get me wrong, I think the guys is a POS and am happy he's gone. But by no means do we improve by letting him walk. We get worse.

he wont be missed. trust me

a healthy Crawford will more than makeup for the loss of hardy.

I'd love to have a healthy Hardy with his head put on straight. Let me know when you find that one.

I expect both defenses to be middle of the road or somewhere in the middle third of the pack or 11-21st. Turnovers and big plays both negative and positive turn most games and will be the soup de jour Sunday.

As a Giants fan, here is my take on this year's Giants.

Coaching : Even though Tom has shown the signs of getting old, losing him on the sideline will have a huge impact on Giants this year. Management tried to minimize the damage by keeping everybody else intact but leadership isn't something you can buy from grocery store. Tom will be missed. McAdoo was a very good OC, but will he be an above average coach right off the bat is to be seen. I am hoping for learning curve not be too steep but we shall see.

Offensive Line : A huge cause for concern. I think if we miss the playoffs, it will be due to this unit.

Defensive Line : Damon Snacks Harrison should improve the run defense. Vernon and JPP should provide the necessary pass rush. Jenkins is a wild card. If he can play clean games, I expect our D to be in the middle of the pack or above.

QB : Eli is gold rest is trash. If he is injured, we are done. God bless Eli.

WR: Odell will get his catches. Is Shepherd as good as advertised? Will Cruz remain healthy? If Cruz remains healthy, Giants migh overcome the offensive line issues but how much do I trust Cruz's health? Not much. Therefore we need Shepherd to be as good as we hope him to be.

RB: Second weakest link on the team after Offensive Line. God help us. Truly!

DB: I am not sold on Jenkins yet and not sure how this unit will perform. No comment on this unit.

Overall, Giants aren't dealing with injuries to key players at the moment or starting rookies as QB. Therefore the division is theirs to lose. If they can't get it done this year, it will be the biggest disappointment of the past 5 years for the Giants and Reese will look for another job.

Left out a rounding out element - linebackers.

Thanks for your look, those are always good to this fan.

Hi CCboy

Giants LB corp is neither a strength or a weakness. Just average. Giants DL and DB will define the LB game. Sorry for lefting it out. Tried to give an honest scouting on my team to my fellow Dallas fans.

Thank you, Sir...and the linebackers connect both your DL and secondary. Those two should be enough an influence for most games...but Dallas also has a very strong offensive line, good receivers, and a great running back group. Their mediocracy may be exploited despite front and back strength - against Dallas.

That should be the crux of how this game sets up...of course, as I see it.

This is the functional element being projected...

The 2014 defense was middle of the pack. Sean Lee missed the season. Jeremy Mincey led the team with six sacks. Yet the team was in the playoff game in Green Bay, and might have won if the offense had made a couple more plays (for example, the Murray fumble and the field goal before the half) or the officials called the game differently (the Dez catch).

Turnovers were the difference with that defense, and could be again. The defensive line is younger, with more upside. The defensive backs are deeper. And there is Sean Lee as the key linebacker rather than Rolando McClain. This 2016 unit could be better than the 2014 one.
