DMN: Sherrington: Gregory's return gives Cowboys a duo they haven't had since Ware-Spencer

Ware was a better pass rusher than Hardy and there is plenty of evidence of it with a quick search of the intent. The stats are there. He was the most prolific pass rusher not named Reggie White in the history of the league.
What about a fellow named Bruce Smith, not to mention an old school gentleman named Deacon Jones?

problem with the comparison is that with the exception of the last half of 2009 Spencer never really was a complement to Ware. His one top year came when Ware was injured.

Sure if you think the only way to define success is sack numbers.

It amazed me this view of Spencer. He was a very good player for us for a very long time.

One of the most underappreciated Cowboys of the last 15 years.

that is a lot of the problem with this team not a lot of talent over all.

There's plenty of talent on the team. But in a QB driven league, when you remove said QB for 8-10 weeks, it's not going to work out too well.

Ditto for the WRs. They're more than good enough when the other pieces (Romo / Dez) are in place. Is it really shocking that Williams and Weeden weren't lighting the league up, or was that slant for a TD against Philly fooling us all that much?

I'm interested in seeing the Nascar package with Hardy, Crawford, Gregory, and Lawrence in at the same time. They can't double them all and if they do the secondary won't have to cover many receivers.

Spencer was great, but Hardy and Gregory have a chance to be the best duo the franchise has ever seen.

We never had that duo clicking on all cylinders. Spencer had the second half of 09 then fell off a cliff or got hurt. Ware had Ellis there for a bit then was alone with no help. Then he started to decline to the point he was no longer effective here. So in my mind we've never had a duo with the potential Hardy and Gregory have.

Spencer was good when healthy, but the last two seasons he just stole money from the cowboys because of hus injuries. He was poor mans Tony Tolbert. Tony Tolbert and Charles Haley. Thats a mean duo

if its ware and spencer then not a really great duo they were 8 and 8 bottom line they didn't win

The teams win loss record is not reflective of how great two pass rushers can be. JJ Watt is the single most dominant rusher in football and just two years ago his team went 2-14

Yep. We had some very good players over the years but rarely were they all playing at the same time at a high level. I guess the best years were when Ware was at his peak and Ratliff was playing like an All Pro. Of course, at that time Spencer was still coming into his own. When Ellis and Ware were on the edges, we didn't have that interior guy. And even with Ratliff in the middle, he didn't get much help. It wasn't until Ratliff's time was passed that Hatcher came into his own. I was really looking forward to that season when we switched to the 4-3 and had a projected lineup of Ware-Ratliff-Hatcher-Spencer. Of course we all know what happened. We got the legendary Golden Cock that year.

:lmao2:

People must forget the we were a 3-4 defense at the time, and Spencer didn't get as many opportunities to pass rush as Ware, when we were in the base defense. He was a solid player, but not elite. I think Hardy and Gregory have the potential to completely dominate games, but we shall see!

One major difference to me is that both Gregory and Hardy can get there, and when they do, they inflict punishment when they tackle.

Anthony seemed to produce great pressure with few hits, and Ware would kind of wrap up the QB and fall with him.

That was the one thing I use to hate about Ware. He was too soft to be a DE.

Kevin Sherrington, sports columnist for SportsDayDFW.com and The Dallas Morning News, answered questions about the Cowboys, Rangers, Mavericks and local college sports in a chat Wednesday. Here are some of the highlights:

Question: It appears that WR Terrance Williams has upped and gone away. Will he recover when Dez returns?

Kevin Sherrington: I believe what you've seen with Terrance Williams is what you're going to get. He can make plays occasionally, but it doesn't appear he's going to be a consistent target. It's one of the shortcomings of this team. Not much quality depth at WR. Consider this: The biggest play of the season was a 67-yard catch by Brice Butler, who wasn't even on the roster when the season started. And they miss him, too.

Gregory was injured in the 1st game.

Question: So Randy Gregory is coming back ... What does he add to the boys pass rush?

Kevin Sherrington: Well, he pretty much was the pass rush before he got hurt. He was a significant factor in those first two wins. With Gregory and Hardy, that gives the Cowboys a pair of pass rushers they haven't had since (DeMarcus) Ware/(Anthony) Spencer.

Charles haley was great pass rusher because he helped his team win superbowls neither ware nor spencer have come close and wont
