Matt Mosley pens a column for ESPN that has this passage:

One of the things that has frustrated [Wade] Phillips to no end is the fact that he basically has no authority over offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. When Jones made Garrett the highest-paid assistant in the NFL, he unwittingly divided his coaching staff. I'm told by sources close to Phillips that he was bothered by the Terrell Owens-related drama in the locker room, but felt as if he had to let Garrett handle the situation.

I would respectfully disagree. From what I've been told, Garrett doesn't like the fact that Terrell Owens has created some of this locker room drama. But Garrett doesn't want to go over Phillips' head.

Garrett is a chain-of-command type of guy, so he expected Phillips to do some of the police work regarding any problems with the team. He is, after all, the head coach.

Phillips shouldn't expect Garrett to police the players. That's Phillips' job. That's why he's the head coach. When players get fined, (yeah it's only $100) it's Phillips who sets the fine totals, not Garrett.

If a player gets in trouble they go to Phillips, not Garrett. That's not because Garrett isn't capable of fining players, but it's Phillips' job.

If Phillips thought Garrett was supposed to police the players, especially the offensive ones, because the offensive coordinator gets a $3 million a year salary, then he needs an attitude readjustment.

watkins is saying exactly what George Dunham said this morning that he was told all year.

Garrett was dejected over the fact that phillips not only didnt hold owens responsible for his nonsense, but in fact encouraged and enabled it.

The whole thing stinks.

This is completely believable to me.

I think Wade and Jason are both classy guys who don't want to step on each other's toes, and in the end, I think they both feel handicapped and annoyed by all of this.

Is there any doubt that a guy like Garrett would do some thing differently if he was running this whole team? And surely Wade would do some things differently too. But here they are...

I still think the best method is to pick one coach or the other. Either that, or Jerry sets them down and explains exactly what he wants from both of them and gives one or both of them the power to do something.

its too bad that wade tried to increase the fines but was put in his place by the one and only gentleman in the entire organization that has any sort of power at all, jerry jones. There is no power struggle in dallas, everyone and their mother knows no one has power outside of jerry.

What you have is a coaching staff that is not in sync, they don't know each other, Phillips didn't take charge of this team from day 1. If your coaching staff is out of sync, how do we expect the players to be in sync?

Im sure it didn't help that Wade actually agreed with Owens' complaints re: Garrett. But I'm sure the entire staff agreed with Owens, just not him going public.

Good point.

I dont think wade or anyone else had a single complaint about our offense when we were 3-0, I certainly didnt see the fire garret cry everyone has now heading into that washington game.

Yet that is the game owens threw garrett and romo under the bus. And what was the response from the head coach, support the malcontent. Probably because the owner told him too.

Wades motto.

Trust, Loyalty and common purpose.

It would probably help if he actually had a backbone and lived up to those things.

In a nutshell, this article pretty much implies why I want Garrett as our head coach, not Wade.

A head coach is not a coordinator, so lets stop with the "but he cant draw up good plays" A.) Players have to execute and B.) I guarentee you Garrett runs a lot tighter ship than Phillips

I actually agree with that. I'm not one of those who has already annointed Garrett, but I still think that if you think he's your long-term guy, or you already know that Wade is not, why not just go with Garrett?

I bet Wade Phillips has alot of resentment towards Jason Garrett. Jason Garrett is the highest paid assistant in the NFL and hasn't proven he is the "genius" all of his fans claim he is.

Furthermore, Jerry Jones, the GM, Owner and guy that signs everyone's paycheck hired Jason Garrett and did so before Wade Phillips was hired. Along with the pay increase, when Jerry Jones hired Jason Garrett, it sent a signal to the entire Organization that Jason Garrett was here because the Owner, GM and the guy that signs everyone's paycheck wants him here.

That fact made Jason Garrett untouchable and unable to be disciplined by anyone not named Jerry Jones.

I wouldn't be suprised if Wade Phillips secretly got a kick out of Terrell Owens ripping the "Golden Boy" when the Offense went south. Once the problem permeated through the entire lockerroom, I think Wade Philliips started to see that Terrell Owens could derail the entire team.

Even though I didn't want Wade Phillips as Head Coach, he is almost in a no win situation because he is literally in charge of individuals that are more powerful than he is.

I have seen this in the "real world" and every time a Manager is managing people that have more pull in the Organization it seems to always turn out negative.

This is part of my reasoning why I dont want Phillips as head coach. A head coach has to be a strong individual. Everything you just described Wade as implies the opposite.

You dont worry abour your assistants and what power they have. You're the HEAD coach. You cant let things like that effect how you run your team.

I want to clarify.

When I say a Manager is "Managing" someone with more pull in an Organization than they have I am talking about when a subordinate has a very close relationship with his/her Manager's boss.

When Jones made Garrett the highest-paid assistant in the NFL, he unwittingly divided his coaching staff. This would imply jerry isn't a witless twit, which he is.

Well, there's one guy who can effect change and one answer to that problem. jerry, fire wade, and either go with Jason or get rid of him as well and go with a vet coach. But here we sit trying to dig out of a hole with the same cast of characters that made the hole.

We need a head coach that holds players accountable.
Wade might be a great guy with a likable personality but that doesn't cut it as a head coach.
I look at a Tomlin or a Whisenhunt...these guys take charge and push thier players and are demanding of thier players.
Does anyone see that in Phillips???
NO WAY!!!!
