Do CB and safety become a priority over pass rush?

Has little to do with that.

Offenses have changed. Pass patterns are shorter, the ball gets out of the QB's hands more quickly and from the shotgun and the passes are more out to the perimeter.

Good luck getting to a QB consistently when they can get rid of the ball in 1.7 seconds or less. In 2015 we couldn't stop pick plays to save our life and no matter what type of pass rush we had, we would have been eaten alive by the pass.

The big difference between 2015 and 2016 is that we were far better against the pick play (it also helped that the refs started to call offensive PI's for once). But, you're in a division with 3 very pick heavy passing schemes in the Eagles, Giants and Skins. Hell, Jamison Crowder basically pass interferes almost every down.

Obviously, we need a pass rush because once you start stopping those quick passes you need to prevent the QB from having too much time to deliver on the deep passes and when the play breaks down. But, if you don't have a defensive backfield in today's game...you're screwed. And putting the pass rush over the DB's in today's game is putting the cart before the horse.

The best defenses can mix up zone coverages and man coverages. It's pretty much a fundamental in the NFL and without it, you're just going to get what the Cowboys have had...little confusion for the opposing QB as to where to go with the ball and little chance for the defense to get INT's, sacks and force turnovers.

YR

100% agree with this.

We can have the best pass rush out there and it won't matter if guys get open in under 2.5 seconds every play.

Why do you think Brady is playing at such a high level late into his career with garbage OLines? Quick passing schemes.

This is a massive hit to our team.

Claiborne, Carr, safeties gone..

Does this mean we move Jones to CB..

draft a CB?

I'm getting confused about where this D is going.

3 starters to be replaced..

still looking for LB help as well.

Starting to think last year was maybe a fluke.

What do you guys see?

It's Pass rush...not coverage. Put some fear in the hearts of QB's...they will respond to fear...a CB strikes NO fear in nobody!! Pain and injury works...make the sizzle throw to the sizzle...Defense wins every time!! Get tough!!
I much rather have pass rush as well but if you have no pass rush then you need corners that can cover to give the lineman more time.......not sure why people can't understand

Brother...corners are weak and an excuse. Bring the heat!! Intimidation wins. Rough up the queer offensive players. Pain wins...ask Haley...Blount..Tatum... Harrison...White... Deacon Jones...and many many more....get them....

Good lord, this thread is a bloody mess. Three of the four secondary positions are set; four if you include Heath.

Dallas needs to draft BPA, with the knowledge that centers, guards, QB, RB can be ignored for the first 4 rounds. I'd add tackles, but this is a piss poor draft class for them; get a developmental player late or UDFA.

BTW, free agency isn't over. Nor is there a game a week from Sunday.

Some of y'all are depressing Cowboy fans. Eeyore would be proud.

A elite pass rush maybe.....but it's the ability to cover that leads to the QB holding onto the ball, so the pass rush can get there
Thats totally crazy. Its Pass rush heat that decides how a Defense plays....

I don't know why anyone is complaining. Personally, I expect to be highly entertained watching the corpse of Scandrick, the carcass of Carroll, and the UPS doesn't deliver on Sunday's Brown try to cover opposing team's receivers while it takes a good 8 seconds for the pass rush to get home. Should make good entertainment.

Would love to have any of those guys......I don't see 1 on this team.

We talk crap about our sorry secondary for years...then we get rid of all the trash and now everyone is worried...lol

Do we have holes in the secondary? Absolutely...we've had them for years

Well excuse me for wanting to upgrade them, instead of getting rid of everybody and replacing them with 6th rounders, and FA's nobody else wants.

You can win with pedestrian secondary play. You can't do it with a pedestrian pass rush.

You better be able to cover in today's nfl......
Thats totally crazy. Its Pass rush heat that decides how a Defense plays....

Again.....under 2 seconds to pressure the QB.....their receivers better be covered, so the pass rush can get there

The way I look at it is the coaches know more about it than I do. People say our D was really bad last year but they tightened up in the red zone and didn't give up a ton of points. I think they just figure that Mo and Carr weren't worth all that money and Church and Wilcox are easily replaced. I think the D will be better next year if David Irvin improves and they pick up a corner and D Lineman in FA or the draft....
