Does a market for T.O. exist?
5/4/2010 5:36:01 PM
According to Frank Tadych of NFL.com, the consensus among NFL Network insiders and analysts is that there is no market for Terrell Owens at this point, and it will take a training camp injury to create his next job. That, of course, is not uncommon for veterans. But it is a cold, hard reality.
NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora says Commanders coach Mike Shanahan is not willing to take the risk (as evidenced by the recent signings of Joey Galloway and Bobby Wade). Fellow insider Michael Lombardi says the Jaguars and Bears are off the list, not interested. The Seahawks and Bengals had been thought to be in the mix. But the Seahawks used a second-round pick on Golden Tate and the Bengals added Jordan Shipley and Dezmon Briscoe to a group that also includes Chad Ochocinco, Antonio Bryant, Andre Caldwell, Jerome Simpson and Matt Jones.
The Raiders, of course, are the Raiders. It’s purely speculation teams like the Bucs, Lions, Rams or Chiefs could be interested. NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger suggested the Panthers should take a look. As you can see, the remaining list isn’t extensive.
It will likely take a willingness on Owens’ part to drop his reported asking price of $5 million. Even then, what will teams be getting? It does get my attention when analyst Pat Kirwan says he believes Owens, who can no longer command double-coverage, could catch 60 passes. Baldinger is also in the camp that Owens has something left, citing his 43-yard TD against Aqib Talib last season.
