Does Garrett survive this scenario?

Hypothetically speaking Hostile, 5 years in as a HC (4 full years) without making the playoffs pretty much is a fireable offense for anybody.

I think the chances of the Cowboys missing the playoffs are nearly nil so it's a mute point.

Having said that, the Bears fired 10-6 Lovie Smith two years ago for lack of recent playoff success despite the fact he had taken the Bears to the Superbowl.

The Lovie Smith firing in Chicago is exactly the reason why you keep Garrett. The Bears have been in a downward spiral since he left as they try to start over.

No need for that in Dallas.

I would agree but the talent on this roster was over estimated. It was not like he took over a super bowl contender with a few holes, he took over team with a lot of internal rot.

Focus on the positive. JG deserves a huge amount of credit for righting the ship. Eagle are in for a surprise on Thanksgiving...

You would like to think so, but this is a crazy year. With the way the NFL backloaded our division games, there are some interesting scenarios. The Lions, Packers, Cards, Seahawks, and 49ers can ruin our season.

Every Division is backloaded with divisional games. That's the way they set up the schedules nowadays. San Fran and Seattle still have both of their games against each other yet to play. They both still have a game left against Arizona. Detroit still has 4 divisional games remaining, including one with Green Bay.

Two of those teams have coaches who have been on the job less years than Garrett, while Harbaugh was hired the same year Garrett officially became non-interim full-time head coach.

That's not to mention Philly, who would be once again beating us out for the playoffs (under this scenario) with a less-tenured coach.

So, under that scenario, most of the teams we're talking about have coaches who have been around for less than Garrett has. I don't see the point in giving him anymore time if he loses a playoff spot to these teams.

Garrett is here to stay. Anticipate the clapping and close your eyes on gameday. He's turning this team into a force to be reckoned with for years to come.

Oline built
Run game established
Run defense established

On deck:
Pass rushers to finish the puzzle on defense. Those guys can make an average CB look All-Pro.

Really not giving it much thought, I do like how this team is coming together and would hate to start all over again. I do think how this team finishes should determine it.

Those coaches didn't take over playoff contenders either? We had our franchise QB and the top pass rusher in the game. We weren't depleted, as much as we would like to believe. The OL was rebuilt over 4 years and the DL is now just getting some attention. Roster turnover is different than rebuilding. The OL was soft until last season due to poor drafting/planning admittedly. Good q @CyberBob. It would be hard for even me to justify moving on after 11-5, but 5 years without a playoff win doesn't support JG as being very influential either. Crappy scenario if it played out that way tbh (for fans and Garrett).

At 11-5 Garrett will be back regardless if the Cowboys miss the playoffs. I can only recall one team ever missing the playoffs at 11-5 the 08 Pats. There's clearly been progress made this season with not a lot to work with on defense. The Cowboys have far exceeded everyones expectations and barring a collapse in the last 5 games finishing 11-5 almost guarantees Garrett will be back. You don't move on from a HC if progress is finally being made and you're on the right path.

They've already exceeded Jerry's expectations for this season. In the off-season, Jerry acknowledged more than once that it was going to be a difficult year due to a lack of talent.

With all due respect, I don't think Jerry remembers what comes out his own mouth 10 seconds after it's said. However on that note, he's more inclined to keep Garrett at this point unless there is total meltdown from the sideline decisions in December. Got to give Garrett credit for the adjustments last night (whether it was his assistance or not). The team is following Garret and playing hard. Hope he coaches well in December. Would love to see a graduation diploma on Garrets desk in Feb.

They're actually asking the opposite of Mike Smith in Atlanta, if they make the playoffs at 6-10 does he stay because of that? Kinda shows the stupidity of going by the playoffs. The average talking media head had us at 6-10 in their preseason previews, so I would think 11-5 is a job well done to everyone except the usual Garrett haters.

You'd have to be pretty senile to get rid of a coach who goes 11-5 and is showing that the arrow on his team is heading on an upward trend. Just because some fluke where an 11-5 team doesn't make the playoffs doesn't change the fact that 11-5 is a really, really good record and will get you into the playoffs 99% of the time.

Maybe if the team went 11-5 and missed the playoffs it would effect the LENGTH of Garrett's next contract ( maybe only 3 years instead of 6 if the Boys got to the playoffs for instance ) and maybe Jerry could get away with paying Garrett a little less in that case. But that's all.

When the NFL adds 2 more teams to the playoffs it's going to increase the odds of losing teams qualifying. If a team wins 10 games or more it makes no sense to fire a HC regardless if their team misses the playoffs.
