Does Garrett survive this scenario?

I swear, the word insanity is not too strong a word. The USA today picked Dallas to go 3-13 this season. That was THEIR evaluation of our talent. I dare say that the MAJORITY of this forum didn't see Dallas winning much more than 8 games, and MANY less than 8. And people are essentially asking, CAN WE PLEASE FIRE HIM IF WE GO 11-5?

INSANE.

Spot on. I listen to SiriusXM NFL radio between jobs and traveling almost every single day. Almost to a man every single pundit on that station from the draft forward to Week #1 picked the Cowboys to be at the bottom or fighting to stay out of the bottom of the division. Jones himself (as stated early in this thread) admitted that the upcoming season was going to be an uphill battle. Has Garrett done it alone? Hell no, and no HC does but he has done a masterful job this season of leading this team.

This is coming from a guy that wanted him fired immediately after the Green Bay game last season.

Mute point or not, you really believe the Cowboys chances of missing the playoffs are nearly nil?

While I am generally pessimistic Risen, I am fairly confident the Cowboys will make it.

I'm not terribly impressed with the Eagles.

Two of those teams have coaches who have been on the job less years than Garrett, while Harbaugh was hired the same year Garrett officially became non-interim full-time head coach.

That's not to mention Philly, who would be once again beating us out for the playoffs (under this scenario) with a less-tenured coach.

So, under that scenario, most of the teams we're talking about have coaches who have been around for less than Garrett has. I don't see the point in giving him anymore time if he loses a playoff spot to these teams.

Not speaking about keeping or not keeping any coach but your premise is all coaching situations are the same.

Has an 11-5 coach EVER been fired? I cant imagine a single circumstance where anyone in their right mind would do that.

At 11-5 Garrett will be back regardless if the Cowboys miss the playoffs. I can only recall one team ever missing the playoffs at 11-5 the 08 Pats. There's clearly been progress made this season with not a lot to work with on defense. The Cowboys have far exceeded everyones expectations and barring a collapse in the last 5 games finishing 11-5 almost guarantees Garrett will be back. You don't move on from a HC if progress is finally being made and you're on the right path.

85 Broncos too. But yeah I can't imagine moving on from Garrett under that scenario.

I would expect nobody here on CZ wants Garret gone right now during the season.

What is fair to say, however, is it is a results oriented league. If he gets to the playoffs and has a 1st round exit I think he buys himself another year. If somehow he didn't get a playoff victory the next season I'd expect him to be gone. All hypothetical of course.

What is the record for most seasons as a HC without a playoff victory?

I'd imagine it would be Marvin Lewis.

Wasn't aware the 85 Broncos went 11-5 and missed the playoffs. That's crazy to win 11 games and end up sitting home.

It depends on how we got to 11-5. If this happens with injuries to major players (Romo, Dez, DeMarco), I can see him surviving it.

If he gets there by blowing some games with stupid decisions that prevent us from winning more games, then I think he should get the axe.

What? You do realize that ending up 11-5 would mean we still go 3-2 over these last 5. Dallas has to go to Philly and Indianapolis, and it's not hard to envision losing those games.

If Dallas ends up 11-5, Garrett gets a well-deserved extension - playoffs or not.

If Dallas goes 11-5 they make the playoffs. Arizona not having a QB will catch up to them. Detroit's offense looks very average right now. Don't see either of those teams going 11-5.

Somebody tell me...what exactly is a "mute" point?

Yeah, barring a catastrophic collapse, Garrett will be back.

I've been critical of him, and am still skeptical, but you can't not extend him after a good season.

last year, the cowboys would have lost this past game against the giants being down at half-time like they were...but, this time, then manned-up and took it to the giants and won...there is a difference in this team when compared to the last few years....@ 11-5, yes, JG is the coach next year and he should be
