Does Jaylon Smith practice this week?

I think the referenced article is being misinterpreted (it was actually poorly worded in trying to relay the NFI rule). Smith is on the "Active NFI" list which means the player is not allowed to practice for the first six weeks of the season. At the end of that six week window, teams have an additional six week window (now at 12 weeks, total) during which a player can return to practice (at any point during that six week window). Once the player starts practicing with the team, the team has a three week window (total window now as long as 15 weeks) to determine whether to activate the player, release him, or IR him.
So, after all that, the team has three more weeks (Nov 27, I believe) before they must make a decision to practice him or IR him. If they decide to practice him, they'll have three more weeks to decide what to do with him for the season. He could potentially return to the team for the last two games of the season.

thanks, so 3 more weeks probably to wait.
even if they IR him end of Nov, they could still bring him back assuming they dont activate the TE, Tapper or Collins instead...

So the November 7th date is meaningless?

Probably because it was published on August 30...

The published date of the article doesn't change the NFL dates for NFI players, etc.

Do the Cowboys have to do anything this week to start the 3 week period where they have to make a final roster decision on him on the 28th of this month? That's the question. Does he have to start practicing this week as the article suggests to meet the NFL requirements or is the article wrong and there is nothing that needs to be done this week?

Based on what LandryFan said, it appears the Cowboys don't have to do anything this week. I was just curious about this whole notion that he has to start practicing with the team this week that was suggested in the article is part of the league rules on players on active NFI status.

He can practice and all they will need to say is he is limited...doing work on the sidelines.
I don't think he has to be a full participant.

The "NFI" rule was the same on August 30th as it is today. I believe that what is being discussed here is the deadline on which the team must make a move with smith. I was simply trying to provide some clarity. I may have just created more confusion...I don't know. :)

I know, my point is that the article is a little bit misleading being posted here because it makes it seem like something just happened, considering the tiiming.

The first sentence in the post said "this article states he has to start practicing by the 7th".

It was the first article that popped up on Google when searching Smith and the NFI dates and roster decision dates for the Cowboys.

Ro has more of a chance of playing this year than Jaylon Smith.
I'm looking more toward 2017 and what he and an influx of new defensive talent can do for this team.
We're on the verge of dominance.

Yes, three more weeks to wait...I'm pretty sure the team will use all the time available. If they IR him at the end of this month, he is gone for the season, as he must stay on IR for a minimum of 8 weeks before he can even practice. On top of that, the lone IR reactivation slot will go to Romo here pretty soon. Anyone else on IR is there for the remainder of this season.

Edit: Romo isn't on IR, so that doesn't apply to him. One player currently on IR can be reactivated this season.

i google Jaylon once a day.
i am sure if practice is required today in order not to go on IR, then we will hear about it one way or another...

good info for the 8 weeks. if we IR him today, can he return by the end of the season if we chose him?
thought Romo is not on the IR...

Yes, I realized that Romo is not on IR as soon as I posted that. As for bringing back JS if he were to be IR'd today, I don't think that we could. He cannot practice (can only rehab) during that eight weeks. The season (including playoffs) would be over by the time he could play. If he goes on IR at any point from here on out, it'll be next year before we see him.

We need a WR or 2 as well.
