I think he's guessing. But it's a pretty strong guess IMO. I doubt he plays this year as well.

I am just curious about the timing and various threshold dates for what the Cowboys have to do in order to bring him back if indeed he can play this year.

Fair enough, while I agree it's a strong guess, it is still in fact a guess.

Do you work at the star?

If he has to start practicing by today 11/7 to stay on the reserve list then I'd guess he's not going to play this season. That link suggests he has to start practicing by today, and then the Cowboys have to decide by 11/28 whether to put him on the active roster.

Those things sound to me like there's a very high chance he's just not playing this year. I was dreaming he was going to come in late season and help the team for the playoffs, but it's looking less and less likely.

Therein lies my question. Is there something the Cowboys have to do today or this week in order to not have to IR him this week? What exactly constitutes "practicing"? Or is the Nov 7th date really not a big deal and the Cowboys don't have to do anything really until the 28th?

if Jaylon practices today, then do we lose the roster spot today?

Doesn't he still have till the end of November?

if i remember correctly, he has 3 weeks to practice.
at which point he would have to go on the roster.
if correct, the big decision comes in 3 weeks.
however, there may be a requirement to pass a physical today.
not sure if he can pass the physical if not fully recovered...
like the OP said, no one knows the requirement for what practice is.

however, if he practices today, this place will have a melt down.
either way, IR or practice today, we get some info today...

That's the question. He has to be added to the 53 by November 28th if he's practicing. But some articles suggest that he has to start practicing this week or the Cowboys have to make a roster decision now.

I am just trying to figure out what is the truth here.

LOL, i just thought of something.
even if they put Jaylon on IR, can he not return this year if he is the one player selected for returning...

From the gist of that article, it really sounds as though Jaylon is making progress with his rehabilitation, even if he's not, as yet, prepared to participate in what is considered a legitimate practice. I see no cause not to be reasonably optimistic about the odds for his recovery in 2017.

I think the referenced article is being misinterpreted (it was actually poorly worded in trying to relay the NFI rule). Smith is on the "Active NFI" list which means the player is not allowed to practice for the first six weeks of the season. At the end of that six week window, teams have an additional six week window (now at 12 weeks, total) during which a player can return to practice (at any point during that six week window). Once the player starts practicing with the team, the team has an additional three week window (total window now as long as 15 weeks) to determine whether to activate the player, release him, or IR him.
In a nutshell, the team now has three more weeks (Nov 27, I believe) before they must make a decision to practice him or IR him. If they decide to practice him, they'll have three more weeks to decide what to do with him for the season. Assuming the team takes the max time allowed, he will be activated or IR'd at week 15.
