Does Tony pick his new team and play for vet minimum?

I don't see a big trade market for Romo. I think he will be released and then sign with another team. There aren't many teams as silly as the Vikings to give up a first round pick for a often injured quarterback.

So are we assuming we trade him?

If so..only a team with cap space is even possible.

If we have to take the contract hit..

I say we keep him another year and let him backup.

I don't see the team taking a big hit on this.

If he doesn't want to play here..Let him not report to camp or retire.
It adds 14M to the Cowboys cap to keep him.

I think he will be released pretty quick to show that Dallas respects their long time players. Taking care of your players is how you make it a place that players want to come to play.

I think he will sign an incentive laced contract (like Manning did) in Denver.

Texans wouldn't surprise me but I think Elway's pitch of "you're the best QB in the league without a ring. I was once you then I did it. If that's not enough, I also helped Manning get another one" will get him there.

You very well might be right but for the LIFE of me I can't see releasing him. As someone else said: he just made 24 mil this season for doing NOTHING. The Cowboys owe him nothing whatsoever. If anything, he owes them. He hasn't played a whole helluva lot the last 3 seasons and has made about 35mil PLUS

Is it confirmed Romo has a trade veto clause in his contract?

I think Tony will end up in KC.
Because of all the bad contracts, I think he ends up, unfortunately, in Chicago or NYJ. Cutlers out and the Jets of course have nothing and no big contacts. I could see Jax too. If Denver changes they're stance then definitely there, however.

Oh, I know. The whole world knows.

You've had Staubach and Aikman, yet Romo is your QB.

You take the "all-time leading passer" and I'll take the rings.

A lot of us didn't see those two play. Good for you if you did.

People need to wake up and realize it's been over 20 years since this team has won anything. A lot of fans don't have the luxury of looking back and remembering SB wins...or even playoff wins.

Romo was great while he was here and past QBs don't change that.

Potentially play for the vet minimum or something considerably low for his talent?

I could see a cheaper contract and him going all in on just getting a ring(s) and not capping out his new team.
No
He may play for less but not vet min

I think Tony will end up in KC.

The Chiefs just came off a 12-4 season with Alex Smith, Romo isn't going to end up in KC. Although Smith isn't real productive he had a solid season and doesn't turn the football over very much. The Chiefs are happy with him. They're not going to have any interest in an aging, injury prone QB. Romo will end up on a team that needs a QB.

See that's just it.

You'd think because you didn't see those two play, that'd you'd listen to those of us who did and consider our evaluation. Many of you (don't know if you do or not) choose not to listen to those, because, well, that's what most younger people do.

You're right, this team has won squat in 20 years, and good ole' Romo was here for a decade plus of that time, and yes, he too, is responsible for some of the team's failures.

He has put up some nice numbers, but the NFL — like ever sport ever played — is about championships, and Romo has none. He's been here for a long time and has led us to one playoff victory — one. It makes the whole "Romo would've won the game, because I dream he could" thing comical.

All Romo has is passing records, and a losing playoff record. No matter how you slice it, that's not good enough. Romo knows it, and now Dak knows it.

The team's moving on, no matter how much some fans lament, and if I were a true Cowboys fan, I'd get behind the actual QB of the Cowboys.

Tough QB market out there... Houston makes a lot of sense, but after that you are looking at "cellar-dwellers" and I can't imagine Tony going to a sub 500 club at this point in his career.

My hope is that he takes a paycut and stays on as a backup for the next 2-3 years. He would be awesome security as a backup and we are on the rise so he could actually win a ring here.

If he won't take a paycut, then I hope he retires and stays on as a coach.

If he is determined to start, then I would love for us to trade him-- but JJ really doesn't have much leverage. Unless he is willing to pay 24mil for a backup-- then teams will just wait for us to cut him.

Which is probably what will happen... JJ will release him so he can sign anywhere he wants to, and we will get some cap relief. Until we have to sign Martin, Dak, and Zeke... heh heh

Only a complete idiot would cut or trade a franchise QB for next to nothing

Oh wait, our owner is Jerry
I guess that is exactly what will happen and everyone will say what a good guy Jerry is

When you have an aging, injury prone QB who lost their job to a young QB and they're making a lot of money you have no choice but to do one or the other. Romo is making too much money to be a backup and he wants to play so we either have to trade him or release him. Odds are he'll be released because no one is likely to offer much for him and he'll be able to pick his team.

Romo doesn't need to take a pay cut to have trade value. An acquiring team would be on the hook for his projected salary of 14 Million in 2017, which at the moment would put him in the bottom half of cap hits incurred for starting QBs:

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/rankings/2017/cap-hit/quarterback/

Some of that will change when guys like Cutler and Kaepernick are cut or restructured, but Romo's salary isn't an issue for a team to take on and its to the Cowboys benefit under the cap to trade him.

We don't know if Tony has a no trade clause or not, it's possible that he does. Not only that but the whole world knows we are going to be starting Prescott at this point. Not economically viable that we pay Tony 19.5 million in base salary to be a backup.

We may very well get nothing but cap space, but that's the cost of giving up all your leverage.

Had we started Romo when he came back from injury we would be in a better negotiating position, but we also would not know as much about Prescott.

I was initially hopeful that we would be able to get some significant assets back, but at this point I think we would be lucky to get a mid round pick.

As others have pointed out his 2017 salary is 14 million, what I have listed here is his 2018 salary of 19.5 million.

If you put Romo on Houston or Denver are they all but guaranteed a playoff spot?

That is worth a lot

No, because of Romo's injury history he can't play 16 games. He hasn't been able last past two games the last three times he's seen the field. Too many injury concerns with him which is why he'll likely be released and not traded.
