This is a team that needs to rebuild it's talent. Nobody is saying a Bosa fixes that overnight. Stop with the strawman argument.

But complaining we are aiming for mediocrity by selecting the consensus best player in the draft is daft.

Don't be daft.

Bosa is the consensus best player in this draft?

My complaint is not about who we draft. Not even close. My complaint is about the way our owners son has consistently talked of our need to improve our pass rush while bringing in guys and not signing them.
Let me ask you a question. Why would the FO bring in Jones? Why would we try to meet with Long? We obviously felt these players could help us.
The issue is the level of cheapness the FO has displayed while acknowledging our biggest problem and still not addressing it. Sure you need to be cap smart. No one is questioning this. But there are times where you have an immediate need for the upcoming season and maybe, just maybe you may have to pay a little more than you want to. Not talking about blowing up your cap. But time is not on our side. Most of the guys who could help us have already been signed by someone else. And here we sit waiting for the draft with a huge hole that could force us to draft for position instead of best player.

Where is this consensus best player in the draft? Are we talking about the same guy? Bosa?
I haven't seen anyone call him the best player in the draft. Especially to call him the consensus best player in the draft?

Regardless of what Bosa becomes at some point in the future with whichever team it does not change the facts that we had the worst pass rush in the league 2 years running and we look to be even weaker with out projected 2 best pass rushers serving 4 game suspensions and now being in the bad stages of the leagues drug program. Drafting Joey Bosa isn't going to change that significantly. At least not this year.

Yes. That isn't a controversial statement.

Its may not be controversial but it sure if wrong.

Maybe if you are listening to last spring scouts when Bosa was coming off a 15 sack season. But after a 5 sack season and a suspension I don't see many calling him the best player in the draft.
He has shown to be a question mark.

Sporting news doesn't even have him as the best DE in the draft;
http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl-new...quartebacks-receivers-lynch-elliott-treadwell

SI has him as the 5th best player in the draft.

Certainly not a consensus.

Long never even met with us.

Jason Jones...is Jason Jones.

The team targeted two higher priority guys in Benson and Cedric and got them both. We have two 2nds and one 3rd invested in the position (both punched us in the gut with suspensions but the investment was there). We gave Crawford another 3rd rounder a nice chunk of change. We have a 5th in Russell who we hope develops. We snagged Irvin who is intriguing.

The team is by no means looking to "quick fix" the line. If Bosa is/was the fix he's just one piece to the puzzle.

This front office the last 3 years has not been as negligent in addressing the defensive line as the negative Nancys would have you believe.

Where is this consensus best player in the draft? Are we talking about the same guy? Bosa?

And as for being the consensus best player he's at the top of Mel's big board. Scouts big board. He's atop Mcshay's big board as well.

He's the consensus best player in the draft by the experts. It isn't really debatable.

Reality is there is really no "consensus" top player in this draft. It seems teams are really split across the board as to who is the guy. There is no Andrew Luck in this draft class.

I know the FO has put resources into trying to create a pass rush. This is part of why I don't want to see even more resources (the #4 pick) going into this position. I don't believe you can just keep chasing defensive linemen year after year while neglecting other positions. This is why a guy like Mario Williams would have helped in a huge way. He would have been our best pass rusher and he would have taught these young guys what it means to be a professional both off and on the field. But good old Stephen Jones didn't want to pay him anything so now we have a bunch of "hopes".

If we go into the season with our current group of guys AND Bosa I don't see how we can expect an improved pass rush. We will be playing players out of position (Crawford, Irvin). Benson is another hope player. Cedric is just a run stuffing DT/DE. No reason to even expect pass rush from him. Why was Benson and Cedric "higher Priority" guys for us? Because they were willing to play for cheap. Our priorities may not be exactly where they should be.

Just to clarify...He never said Long met with us...his exact words were... Why would we try to meet with Long?

Oh it's not a finished product. We all know that. They will add some rookies who we hope can contribute in a few years. How many rookie pass rushers ever do anything in the Pro's? I'm not sure you can name a single 1 who has put up double digit sack totals as a rookie.

Then we always have the "next wave" of free agents to hope will give us a pass rush.

My original post said to maintain mediocrity...I want to apologize for using that word. Mediocrity would indicate we were in the middle. We are looking at the potential to actually be worse on opening day than we were last year.

But hey Stephen Jones is a genius who likes to bring players in just to have lunch with them, low ball them and then watch them sign with another team.

No, maintaining mediocrity is overpaying for mediocre free agents, or giving someone like Mario Williams big bucks and hoping his switch stays on, unlike his last two stops in Houston and Buffalo.

We need to achieve mediocrity before maintaining it.

I bet you said the same thing when the Broncos needed to fix their defense and they went out and signed Aquib Talib and Demarcus Ware. How did that work out for them?

Why?

Because we were looking for cheap vets who we hoped could provide a rotation around our young tent poles. Every team needs a few Mincey's.

Pretty good since they had Von Miller and Malik Jackson in place.

Von Miller had 18.5 sacks the year the Broncos defense was putrid.

But I guess he is the reason the turned into such a dominating defense.

He's not kidding. He's right. Williams would have been an improvement on the pass rush we currently have (especially if Lawrence is indeed suspended for 4) games and on top of that, his contract is actually really team friendly in Miami. The exact type of short term, low risk deals we should be looking for instead of trying to sign the Adrian Clayborn's and James Jones' of the world.

Not kidding even a little.
We have 2 DE's who we drafted who are currently suspended for drug violations. 1 has zero career sacks and is one puff away from a year long suspension. The other doesn't wake up until week 8 each season and is coming off a back surgery.

Mario Williams would have been our best pass rusher.

It worked out well for them. But they paid for it. Ware was solid, but any DE/OLB would benefit having Miller on the other side. Regardless of Denver's success, you don't buy championships.

No, Williams is too inconsistent. Has been his whole career, which is why he is on his 3rd team.
