Draft musings

Let's assume my worst-case scenario. The draft goes:
1. Burrow (QB)
2. Tua (QB)
3. Young (DE)
4. Simmons (LB)
5. Wirfs (OT)
6. Herbert (QB)
7. Okudah (CB)
8. Brown (DT)
9. Wills (OT)
10. Love (QB)
11. Kinlaw (DT)
12. Becton (OT)
13. Lamb (WR)
14. Juedy (WR)
15. Thomas (OT)
16. Ruggs (WR)

Best players available (Very little separates them IMO):
Henderson (CB), Chaisson (DE), Higgins (WR), Delpit (FS), McKinney (SS), Murray (LB)

My best guess at the moment is that we won't re-sign B.Jones or Quinn but will re-sign Heath and Cobb. That puts Chaisson and Henderson as most likely. Murray is a wild card if LVE is screwed but I think it's unlikely. We will have a much clearer opinion after free agency on our needs.

If we don't re-sign Quinn or Jones, this defense is setup for a disaster. No pass rusher, or CB... recipe for disaster.

Chaisson would be a good pick in this scenario, but he is not ready to be a consistent pass rusher, and he would benefit greatly with Quinn being back on the roster.

I agree with your evaluation of the player but I don't necessary think it'd be a disaster.

Take this scenario:

17. Chaisson
51. Danzler
82. Hamilton
120. KJ Hill

DE: Lawrence, Crawford, Gregory, Chaisson, Armstrong
CB: Awuzie, Brown, Danzler, Lewis

I think the pass rush and corner positions are okay.

Chaisson as a rookie being your key RE is a bit worrisome IMO. I think he can develop into a very good DE and I really like the picks but not sure he is ready to start be a key contributor just yet.

I absolutely love Pollard but I think slot WR is a stretch for him.

NFL RB was also considered a stretch for Pollard. He was considered a special teams and gimmick player. Another in our long line of Dunbar, Austin, Whitehead, Switzer. Cobb is the closest to a true WR of the bunch, but still on the RB/Returner/WR spectrum. Like Pollard.

Note I didn't say slot WR, I said slot RB/WR. He's the new gimmick in town. He's a complement to our run game. He runs. He's fast enough to go deep. He can take swing passes. He doesn't need a complete route tree. The downfield balls are when he gets a mismatch to run by. He has the speed for it. He should be in motion most of the time.

Agree...I actually think Chaisson is one of the more overrated players in the draft.

I like him, but he’s more athlete than football player at this point.

Chaisson isn’t the safe pick. And that’s the question that we’ll have to answer on draft night. Do you play it safe and go with a guy like McKinney or take a less polished guy with a high upside.
