If we get Barr or Donald I'd be ecstatic. I'd be happy with Demarcus Lawrence, Ealy or Crichton in the 2nd round.

I will be doing backflips if we get either Donald or Barr at 16.

Both of these guys are going to be studs at the next level. I would even consider trading next years picks if both of these guys are available in the mid first round.

That is something we will both be celebrating. Especially Donald. He is by far and away the best thing that could happen to this team next week.

That's why I've said he could very well be a very good GM because clearly he will probably never be a good HC.

How do you know either of these things ?

Isn't it much more likely that the major decision-maker (Jerry) made those decisions and not Garrett?

People just want to give garret credit for good picks to make themselves feel better about the direction of the franchise and the process when the reality is that things are still just hit or miss like in the past

Jerry has the power
Garrett is a yes man cashing his millions

before garrett, we had exactly one OL man drafted in the first round under jones.

and draft is not done by a single decision maker. the gm, coach, scouts, assistant coaches, build a board. then the draft happens. it was no secret that garrett wanted smith.

but I guess all good decisions are jones' and the bad decsions are garrett's. until the next coach, then we can blame jerry and give credit to the other coach.

I'm not sure that Garrett wanted Smith or not because there was already talk that Jerry didn't want to resign Adams. Thus Smith was a possibly a draft due to necessity rather than Garrett thinking we needed Oline help.

Lets face it. If Garrett really thought he needed help in the Oline we would have drafted better oline prospects and not the scrub players in Costa, Aiken, and Nagy. We even went with scrub signings with Berny and that other guard we just cut - which for the likes of me I can't remember his name.

It took Garrett just a whole 3 years to get us a dependable center and it was not his first choice to begin with.

Thus I really don't think that Garrett puts a lot of value in having a good oline. As for Smith, it just seems that that was a Jerry pick due to people bringing up the point that we need oline help. Also, why hasn't anyone brought up Felix Jones? Didn't Garrett have influence over that pick as well?

late round wild shots. how many 7th rounders stick around,

garrett wanted smith. he knewin order to succeed he needed to fix the OL. so drafting smith made sense. perhaps both agreed. but we know Jerry's history. go for the show. forget everything else. under his influence, he often build outside in. why? it sells more tickets.

how could a coach not have influence over the draft? perhaps not on draft day and making trades. however every head coach is directly involved in building the draft board. scouts bring evaluations to the table and the coaches, GM, etc. build the board. and why is Fredrick pick a debacle. the player is working out fine. but we got paid too little for it. we also didn't pay too much to get Claiborne. the questions is our talent evaluation process, ranking him as the top defensive player on our board.

It was a debacle because they wanted Pugh and then the center. But Pugh got picked at least 15 spots higher than they figured. Then they went into panic mode and had to take Frederick before they lost him to. Debacled

And as far as Claiborne, they could have had a quality DT and a LB who went to Seattle instead. I call that paying too much for a CB who isn't starting.

You watch the war room cam and tell me Garrett has any influence.

We drafted Smith because we didn't want to resign Adam. Thus we needed to fill an important void. I don't know where you got that info that Garrett wanted Smith because he wanted to fix the Oline. If that was the case why would we cut Gurode and stick an unproven UDFA in Costa to fill that void? Then our entire year went to hell because we couldn't pass protect Romo. Then the same issue happened the following year with untested linemen and UDFA signings to fill in an important void in our oline.

People here were clamoring for years for the Dallas FO to fix the Oline. It was not until we drafted Frederick that we finally solved the Center problem of our Oline. Now its become our strength. But that was not because Garrett; it was because Jerry wanted to get a Center no matter what it took even though it went against the wishes of his draft team including Garrett.

Garrett has been a with this organization for almost a decade and he should have realized that the oline is crucial in protecting Romo. Yet there was nothing on his part to show for in trying to fix the Oline. You may say that he wanted Smith. But I don't think so. I think all that is nothing more than Garrett sunshine pumping. Smith was drafted to fill in the void of Adam leaving, which is an important fixture of our oline. It was not because Garrett realizing we need a dominant oline.

I'm inclined to say that the 2009 draft was the absolute worst, but that entire draft class wasn't that great as a whole anyway. There wasn't much to choose from.

true on both counts, however IMO what made matters worse was that we had 13 picks and KNEW going in that we probably had 5-6 roster spots. We should've been wheeling and dealing to insure we got who we wanted and/or stockpiling picks for next year's draft. Had we moved up a few spots for Unger, I think several of our seasons pre-Fred would've gone much better. Romo was getting blasted right up the middle.

yes, we needed a tackle. we could have as easily delayed drafting a tackle until second round or latr, which in fact would have been aligned with what we had done in the past. It was unprecedented for the cowboys to draft an OL in the top 10.

and now, its all jerry. jerry wanted to fix the OL. not garrett, because garrett, as OC and coach, could give a crap about the OL. is that right? but yet, under parcells, campo, switzer, wade, we gave lip service to OL during the draft.

and if we are giving jerry credit for drafting OL men and fixing the OL, does he get the blame for crappy drafts during the wade era?

is it garrett sunshine pumping or is it Jerry? Jerry's history of sunshine pumping is very long.

I don't think pugh got picked 15 picks higher than expected. us fans and most of these so called draft analysts didn't figure Pugh to be a highly regarded candidate. in fact he was high on the cowboys board and giants jumped on him.

and they did reach with Fredrick. I don't mind that. it filled a need. I rather get a solid player for a position of need than puttz around trying to get a player that we want in the expected slot. We did that a few years back when we didn't trade up a couple of spots to take Unger and he was rated as a first round prospect on our board. Seattle traded up ahead of us and took him. we ended up trading into the 3rd and taking Jason Williams and the rest is history

in regards to Claiborne, I don't have a problem with trading up and getting a player we ranked as a top 5 player and the best defensive player on the board. the issue is that we didn't evaluate him right. and if we don't fix that we might continue to have hit or miss prospects in the first round.

I don't see why you have an obsession to defend Garrett at any negative point being raised. All I stated was that I place more credit to Jerry drafting Tyron Smith than to Garrett. And that Garrett really didn't focus on the Oline as much as he should since he was an off coordinator for many years. Garrett dumped Gurode and inserted Costa and stated that he was the next best thing and placed his trust in Costa for many years. This held back Dallas in drafting a true Center and other important fixtures of the Oline because Garrett wanted to prove that his acumen in determining good talent was above par. As you know, the Costa experiment was a complete failure. We struggled with Oline issues for many years. And it wasn't until Jerry traded down and got Frederick.

Not sunshine pumping Jones here. In fact, I've very critical about him as I am with Garrett. But all the wrong moves his done so far, I have to congratulate him on three things which I approved of so far.

1. Drafting Tyron Smith
2. Drafting Frederick
3. Taking the play-calling responsibility away from Garrett

Lets be real here. I doubt we would have Smith or Frederick without Jerry's willingness to draft them. Which makes me think that maybe Jerry has more sense about the Oline then Garrett. He also was right in taking Garrett's play-calling responsibility away. Thus makes me conclude that Garrett really doesn't know much for determining good talent; as evident with relying on Costa for several years. Secondly, Jerry is not that dumb when he knows play-calling was an issue and that Garrett just can't cut it.

I don't defend. as a matter of fact I am probably the most objective because I neither care if he stays nor leaves. because I neither hate him nor like him. but to say jerry had to do more with getting smith is probably less correct than saying garrett did, simply because the record prior to Garrett says, he wouldn't. Even when we drafted Adams and at that time we needed a tackle, we didn't take one in the first, we waited until the second round. so somebody convinced Jerry that drafting OL men early is a good thing.

garrett dumped gurode, because gurode needed to be dumped. time to move forward. I never read anywhere that Cost is the next best thing, outside of reading the general bull crap from everyone about every candidate they have, before they proceed to replace him. so I don't put much stock into we really love this guy and we really love that guy. actions speak louder. Keeping costa helped Jerry making excuses for drafting "show" players than meat and potato guys. Jerry signed the two crappy guards and tried to pass them as legit off season signings to fix the OL. Jerry trade down last year was a total debacle.

and the way its coming across, you are giving jerry credit for all the moves. because you don't want to give Garrett any credit. facts are that we have drafted better in the past few years. when during wade we had horrible drafts. its history of Jerry.

and at the end of the day, Jerry makes all the final calls on draft day. history says, when there is a strong voice balancing the fantasy in Jerry's head, drafts seem to be better. when he doesn't have a strong voice in the room, he runs all over the coaches and scouts and drafts turn out horrible.

the play calling thing is whole other issue worthy of its own thread (I am sure there is about 10 of them out there already there in the first couple of page).. this one is about drafting.

I am sure you will change your tune, when garrett is gone, you get another coach, and anything that goes wrong, is jerry's fault including bad draft picks and the good ones get credited to the coach.

I won't pretend to know who to credit nor point the finger of blame to for our drafts. Too many individuals are involved in that process to single anyone out in particular. I'm simply hoping our current draft reflects a more organized approach to success.

Im just stating what I see about Garrett. I give Jerry the same slack as I would with Garrett. But I don't think at all that Garrett had anything to do with the rebuilding of our Oline. The drafting of Smith and Frederick should be more so credited to Jones than anyone else in the organization. Thus I spoke out about Garrett getting credit for something he doesn't deserve. Garrett has been here for almost a decade and has should no indication of wanting to fix the oline. Thus we had crappy draft after draft when it came to the oline. Maybe its because we had a terrible FO in picking out talent. Who knows....all I know is that Garrett has done much for our oline since his been our Off. Coordinator and our coach. I would give credit when its due. But when it comes to oline rebuilding, Garrett does not get a pass from me.

Outside of 2009 I think 2007-2013 is all pretty comparable. And my biggest gripe with 2008 is a Garrett pick.

garrett has been head coach for 3 years. ultimately its the GM but influenced by coaches and scouts. Jerry always needs a strong, reasonable voice in the room to balance out his penchant for being dramatic or thinking along the lines of fantasy football. That's why we had better drafts during parcells and now garrett, compared to years with campo, switzer, gaily, wade. does this mean I am a garrett supporter? no. but I do think garrett seems to balance out and reason with jerry much better than wade did, who was run over like egg whites in a pan.

ultimately teams make up their draft boards, with a lot of input from coaches and scouts. draft day, they work through their draft board and the GM makes final call. I do think garrett did want to address OL, but Jerry thought he can give it lip service, click his heels three times and make beardenau to an all pro all of a sudden. Jerry spends his money on "show", he wants a splash. he wants to be talk of the town. he wants to sell tickets. drafting a center or guard doesn't sell tickets for him, thus he has avoided it for years until he couldn't avoid it anymore. why he did. probably because everyone, fans, media, coaches started to criticize him for not drafting OL and not addressing it. Again, Dallas never drafted OL in the first round under jones before. And its not like we have had a good OL for the past 15 years. so is it garrett that didn't want to add OL? or is it Jerry? all signs point to Jerry.
