CFZ DT Trysten Hill could surprise

Trysten Hill will be one of the three 3-tech DT guys I’m looking forward to seeing how it plays out.
Some here either will,.. or already have written him off the roster.

- Barring injury, I still think Trysten has a chance to make this 53 roster as a key rotation guy.
Yes, he is not Quinn’s hand picked draft selection, but neither is Gallimore.

- I don’t think his mini camp impressions is by luck, as it was reported he gave rookie Tyler Smith
some problems vs pass, shouldn't come as a surprised.
Hill is athletic and agile, and can move well off the blocks and in pursuit for one 310 pounds.

- For one over 300 pounds, I even to tend to think in terms of his lateral movement, agility and change of direction may be better than Gallimore.
I think between durability and discipline issues (maturity) , that’s been his biggest issues and setbacks.

- Like Gallimore, he’s been slowed and setback by injuries,
He was benched for most of his rookie year under Marinelli
His 2nd year was immediately shortened by the ACL tear injury
His 3rd year he was very slow to recover off coming off that ACL injury; by mid-season.
It didn't helped by a game suspension per post game Raiders.

I’ll be surprised if Hill makes the 53-man roster. Sometimes you just have to admit a bust is a bust.

Hill has significant physical talent.
- Excellent quickness for a player over 300 pounds.

He was the best DT in 2020 until his injury.
- Better than Gallimore in the games they both played.

He was active over Bohanna in the playoff game.

If he stays healthy in the preseason, he should be in the rotation during the regular season.

Hill was purely a "traits" pick. Dude has a freakishly quick first step. However, he was most obviously a project pick. Has definite talent. Prolly the most talented DT on the roster. Doesn't appear he'll live up to it at this point, hard to say.

I think his contract situation and being in the final year of his deal is a significant factor against him. The team can keep several young players with upside on the cheap vs having to pay Hill next year.

If Hill has a productive year, they can either decide to re-sign him long term (in that role) , or let him walk , let him sign a big contract with another NFL team,
and we get a compensatory pick for his FA departure.

And they can also add another DT to groom in that role the NFL draft.

I have read articles that reference a priority finally being placed on the 1-tech position and doing a better job of stopping the run. The position Bohanna and Ridgeway play.

What I have not read is any emphasis on keeping Trysten Hill around.

As an invested 3rd rd pick, I'd certainly hope to have Chauncey to have Michael Bennett like aspirations.

But in all likelihood for a guy that does not have impressive first step get off, or overwhelming power, Golston could end up being
a tweener like Tyrone Crawford, who switches and kicks back and forth to end to DT.
The club supposedly had Golston bulked him up to give him more of a chance to play some DT.

A jack of trades but master of none ?
i admit that among the more front running highly invested DL, i am the least impressed, least expectations
of Golston than Osa, Gallimore or Trysten.

But in all fairness, Chauncey is yet another that was hit and setback because of injuries.
His camps and preseason was completely wiped out, and that had to have disrupted his learning experience,
and he saw spotted time for the most part of the entire season.

Despite missing the preseason and the 1st two regular season games, Golston ended up playing 41% of the snaps.
- That's a definite accomplishment for a rookie.
- Dan Quinn runs a multi-front defense. Tweener traits are a good thing in this type of defensive scheme.

Between Rod Marinnelli and the ACL injury, there's been obstacles and circumstances hindering his progress.
We have yet to see him in a full season, to really see what he can do.

Most of which have been his fault. I have yet to see a player who truly knows his role and responsibilities on the field. He continues to look like a dog chasing cars.

He could end up eventually being on the practice squad if the summer doesn't hold well enuff for all we know.

While i'm glad that we at the very least drafted some kind of 1 tech in the late rounds, ..we still either don't have or dunno what we have in these last two.

And it will always be like that because Stephen utterly will not invest highly in 1 tech role. It won't ever be a high draft pick.. nor an quite established vet FA that he'd have to pay big dollars to.
Our only chance to come hit the lottery gem on an late rd draftee,.. an undrafted rookie or a bargain street FA vet.

And i've posted several times, we cannot lay it all on one guy to stop the run. that has to come by committee within the front seven.

Marinelli is outta the picture now. And what's done is done.
And that includes with the infamous Taco over TJ Watt, the premiere pass rusher in the entire NFL.

With our team and players now, we have to focus on the present and future instead of keep dwelling on the past, such as Marinelli.
And from all angles and reports, Trysten is already off to a good start with positive notes in these past mini camp.

It's only one thing that i do not want to see or hear about Trysten, and it'd be related to that post Raiders game temper tandrum fight.
Which has nuthin to do with in-the heat of the battle and moment of the game in the trenches, imo
That was premeditated. That was immaturity. That's what i myself want to see him get better in that stage.

I would say on half of those he was pushed around.

It jumped out at me and I wasn't even looking for it, i believe I was reviewing the futility fo Gregory in that game.

He took snaps away from Osa (29 snaps). I had forgotten Osa's number and kept seeing 97 flashing all over. It was Osa...the guy has freakish ability imo.

Because I strive for accuracy in assessing these guys I went back and watched the game again..

Hill enters the game at 12:25 of the 1st quarter the the Niners having 1st and 10 at the Cowboys 32. Gallimore and #91 started the game and the Niners had moved from their 25 to our 32 without much resistance to that point.

Snap 1: 12:25 Hill pushes the center 3 yards into the backfield but Osa, who was in at the 1 tech gets taken to the ground by #71 leaving a huge cutback hole for Mitchell which he exploits for 12 yards. Because Osa going to the ground allowed the guard to get to the linebackers and there was nobody home once Mitchell cuts back. Hill's penetration would have created a TFL or a short gain at worst if Odighi had stayed on his feet.

Snap 2: Pass WR screen left. Samuel takes the ball from the 20 to the 4. Osa and Kazee make the tackle.. Hill hustles down the field and almost gets in on the tackle.. As the backside DT..

Snap 3: 8:36 1st and 10 at Dallas 47. Hill at the 1 tech. Run wide right away from him by Mitchell for 4.

Snap 4: 8:04 2nd and 6 at the Dallas 43. Hill back at the 3. Handoff left side for 9. Hill is double teamed but gives no ground. Mitchell cuts left where the rest of the guys have vacated.

Snap 5: 7:30 1st and 10 at the Dallas 34. 3-4 look. Hill is the right side DE. Hill penetrates and almost makes the tackles in the backfield. The handoff is to the left but there is a huge cutback lane left because the backers overpursue. Mitchell gets 5.

Snap 6: 6:50 2nd and 5 at the Dallas 29. Throwback screen blown up for loss of 11.

Snap 7: 2:37 of the 1st. 49er ball at their own 22. Stretch play to the right. Hill and Tank on the T/E stunt blow the play up and combine for a 1 yard TFL.

Snap 8: 2 and 11. Run to 2 hole.. Hill stalemates his man forcing Mitchell to jump cut one gap outside. Unfortunately no backer fills that gap ( I think it was supposed to be LVE) and the result is a 5 yard gain.

2nd quarter

Snap 9: 3rd and 3. pass slant to Deebo for 19.

Snap 10: 10:31 3rd and 3 at Dallas 24. Deebo run to the right side. Hill penetrates and blows up the play. Turns it back in resulting in a short gain. That stop forced the 49ers to kick the FG.

3rd quarter

Snap 11: 1st and 10 at the 25. Pass .. Hill flushes Garapolo to his right.. pass incomplete.

Snap 12: 1st and 10 at the Dallas 26 after Dak throws the pick. Deebo on the toss sweep to the right. Hill contains and forced the cutback. Unfortunately nobody is home at the second level and he scores.

4th quarter

Snap 13: 10:34 1st and 15 at the 39. Deebo run to the right. Hill stalemates his man forces cutback again. This time his teammates show up.. gain of 3.

Snap 14: 2nd and 11 at the 43. Pass.. Hill penetrates, flushes Garapolo.. Jimmy G throws a lollipop on the run that gets picked off by Brown.

Snap 15: 5:37 1st and 10 at the 39. Inside run for 2 yards. Osa and Hill stalemate the offensive line.

Snap 16: 4:29 1st and 10 at the 42. Inside run left. Hill at the 1 tech now, submarines and blows up the play for no gain. Mitchell trips over him and the lineman.

Snap 17: 3:45 2nd and 10 at the 42. Outside handoff to the right.. Hill was still at the 1 tech. Short gain..


That's all the snaps I could find on a quick review. There was a sequence there where there were penalties on a bunch of plays so I didn't count those. Maybe they did.. What I could NOT find was any instances of Hill being "pushed all over the field." In fact it looked to me like the combination of him and Osa was out best run stopping DT line up. They were the ones on the field when the Niners were trying to run out the clock and they got the stops. Unfortunately Gallimore and Gregory got stupid penalties that kept the Niners drive alive and the clock moving.

All this is to say that the perception that Hill got abused in that game is patently false. I went looking for examples of it happening and could not find any. But maybe on those 5 or 6 plays he was in that I missed he got blown up?

And keep in mind that you can only suit up so many players, in so many units .per game day active.

I actually watched a highlight reel of Micha’s rookie season yesterday and what I noticed is Osa got into the backfield a ton on these highlights. Like Aaron Donald quick.

My thoughts exactly when he jumped off the screen at me in the Rams game. He has an explosive jump side step thing that he does that throws the lineman for a loop every time.

A classic case of people's perceptions costing them the ability to see reality. I have to admit I was surprised how many times Hill stalemated the double and flat out shredded single man blocking in that game. Even I fully expected to see him on roller skates every time he was in because watching the game live it seemed like everybody on the d-line was. I saw nothing of the kind. His upfield penetration forced the back to redirect at least a half dozen runs and when the LBs were in their gaps it led to short gains. Hill might have been our best DL in that game.. He was certainly our best DT. I could see how one could have given the nod to Gallimore or Osa just cause they were credited with more tackles but the both had CRUSHING penalties that kept Niner drives going. Frankly upon rewatch I think the official scorekeeper must have a couple of Hill's tackles to Basham (#92). Hill seemed like he was in on at least 5 tackles to me and he was the primary pass rusher who forced the bad throw that was picked. Yet he was not credited with a pressure or hurry on that play. How do you get into the QB's face, force an errant throw but not have that be a pressure or a hurry or something positive?
